You're right. A sandwich is supposed to be one item, A, between two different items, B. So a sandwich is BAB. Similarly, CAC and DCD and 313 and =+= are all sandwiches! But a hot dog is only one item pretending to be two. Let's take for example the letter "m". We can say that "mo" is not a sandwich, but "non" is a sandwich. You see, "m" was divided into two "n" characters. That's a similar case for hot dogs—one item is split and doubled on both sides. I'll leave it up to other interpreters to decide if a hot dog is a sandwich based off of this speculation. (Oh, and I don't think hot dog is a sandwich because it's not actually called a sandwich I mean if it were a sandwich in culinary terms then why wouldn't it be called a sausage sandwich like ??? and also sorry if I make no sense)

by this logic, a sub sandwich is not, in fact, a sandwich. or you could say that it is a sandwich, but in that case, why isnt a hot dog a sandwich? tough call

by this logic, a sub sandwich is not, in fact, a sandwich. or you could say that it is a sandwich, but in that case, why isnt a hot dog a sandwich? tough call By which logic? By the first logic, then it's not a sandwich. By the spoiler logic, anything is a sandwich if you call it a sandwich lol. Language is arbitrary. We can always redefine "sandwich" to fit expanding labels of "sandwich"! We can actually make a metaphor to human rights! In our past, and in our future, we will be expanding the definition of who is "human" and thus who deserves "human" rights! In America, it used to only be white, land-holding men who were considered "human" and as time went on we saw an expanding definition of "human". Connecting this metaphor back to sandwiches, we can say the same thing! The sandwich actually used to be only associated with gamblers who did questionable stuff at night. It's gone from there and infiltrated rich people's society in Europe, transformed to fast food for busy industrial workers of the 19th century, and to staple foods of several countries in the world as flat breads grew in popularity. And, as sandwiches were introduced to different places in the world, we see mutations in the definition of "sandwich", going from "herbs between hard pieces of bread" to "superhard bread soaked in food that you never actually ate the bread part of" to "food between exactly two slices of bread". In places like the Netherlands, the belegde broodje, or "open faced sandwich", doesn't actually fit the common definition of "sandwich" and over time has evolved. But, initially, as according to its name, it should have consisted of just one side bread and the other side not-bread. (I don't have proof for this though lol.) In conclusion, language is arbitrary and hot dog may or may not in the future or in the present or in the past may be considered a sandwich. And a sub can also be a sandwich, depending on how you'd like to view it or where you come from. Since I'm American and adhere to American definitions of random things without consideration of anything else, I accept only the American court-ruled definition of "sandwich": two slices of bread with ingredients in between. ( They legit made a court-ruled definition of a sandwich in American I can't even)

I've done so much research on sandwiches thanks to this thread I'm really happy
Edit: I'm leaving to sleep now and I wish I could partake in more sandwich hot dog discussion, haha. This was probably the best highlight of my day, after (basically) failing my chemistry test.

what if the bun rips and becomes two pieces? Depends on if you want to call each piece a distinct piece of bread.

hot dogs aren't sandwiches, but true subs are this is a sub: this is crap that shouldn't be considered a sub: You are correct. The first subs were baguettes cut in half laterally and had food stuffed inside as a filling. I'm not sure how much they were cut in half, but considering that the first subs were made in America and they were called "sandwiches" then subs count as legitimate sandwiches.
