My first story and thread on this site! I hope I'm doing everything right, and I deeply apologize if I mess up. Wrote this for the Tuesday challenge and finished within an hour. Thanks for reading!
A Meeting at the Border
****
The quiet underbrush erupted into sound as a large golden shape exploded through a honeysuckle bush. The sting of the thorns never hit him as he skidded to a stop in the middle of the forest floor. He took a couple seconds to catch his breath, this run still taking a toll on his lungs. It had been many seasons since he last made this run. However, he felt he had to.
He had told his clanmates that he was hunting. In a way, he thought to himself, I am. I'm just hunting for a cat.... Daystream closed his eyes. He opened them once again, taking sight of the she-cat in front of him.
“Brother, you’re here,” mewed a familiar voice a couple feet away. Ahead of Daystream, a she-cat sat, hidden by shadow. Daystream could see the glimmer of her blue eyes, identical to his. He faked a smile, although it disappeared quickly.
“Yeah,” he mewed breathlessly. He sat back on his haunches, staring at his paws for several moments. He finally harrumphed and mewed, ” I can’t do this, Nightbeam.”
It almost came out as a whimper, something he hadn’t done since he was a kit. He couldn’t help himself, and he hated it.
“Don’t worry, brother,” assured Daystream’s sister,” It’ll be fine. You’re doing great!” Daystream shook his head, his black tipped ears shaking with the bob of his head.
“No, I’m not,” He spat,” You always told me. You always told me I was destined to be a leader.” He paused, his voice getting caught in his throat.” I don’t know anymore, sister.”
The dark black she-cat dismissed the idea with the flick of her tail, her paws rubbing the Thunderclan borderline.
"Now, I am more than sure of it," mused the dark she-cat," You are growing into a good leader and a better cat, Daystream. I promise you that things will look up. With every challenge, you're growing stronger and wiser." Her bright blue eyes showed the veracity of her statement; she believed in him, and he knew it.
"It's so hard," mewed Daystream,"Every day, my clan fights each other. There is not enough food, and the water is poisoned. It's all so hard."
“It will get easier,” mused Nightbeam, sitting on the other side of the Thunderclan border. Her eyes showed great concern and sympathy,” I wish I could be with you, but you know how it is. My clan forbids me, brother.”
“I know,” mewed Daystream dejectedly,” and it’s all my fault. If it wasn't for-”
“No,” interjected Nightbeam, shaking her head,” It’s not your fault. Starclan willed our separation, and as much as it hurts, it might be for the best." Daystream just shook his head. Tears began to collect in his eyes.
"I wish you could return so badly, sister. You were all I had left," Daystream mused.
"That's not true. Your friends are still there, right?" reasoned the black she-cat," They will die for you and you will die for them. That is a greater bond than blood could ever be."
Daystream just shut his eyes in sorrow, his tail drooping.
“I’m here for you. I want you to remember that, okay?” And then she was gone. Daystream nodded again, opening his eyes, her words ringing in his ears.
As he stared at the other side of the Thunderclan-Windclan border again, he took a long look at the mound of dirt rising several inches above the forest floor. Then he stared down at the paws that had dug it all those moons ago. I'm sorry I couldn't save you.
Finally, he regained his composure and raced back to help lead his clan.
