Honestly, all of them are a bit different, but here's some general tips. Usually you would fill out a form to join, and then just go back and forth with paragraphs from the perspective of your character(s). Also, many of the roleplays are under one of three categories: semi-literate, literate, and advanced. semi-literate means the roleplayers ask for 3-4 sentences of roleplay per post, literate is 4+ and advanced is several paragraphs. I suggest joining a roleplay that suits your preferences. Make sure to read the front page of any roleplay you are interested in joining fully before you post. People spend days working on them and they'll have all the information you need to get started. Be sure to make sure the roleplay you want to join is not closed. Usually this is noted in the title line or early on in the page.
Before you start, I'd recommend going around to either Fan Clans(cat roleplaying) or Off-topic roleplaying(everything else) and clicking on a few random threads. Look around. Read some front pages. Read some roleplaying posts, see what others are doing and what to expect.

Hi I would also like to give some insight! First of all Welcome to the Forums! Glad you found your way here. Roleplays are all honestly based on the rules that each owner of the thread provides! There is not really a "correct" way to roleplay but most would prefer third person point of view. Ex.) She leapt nimbly from branch to branch in search of the bird. Finally! A flash of red caught Stonestreak's eye. Just from a personal opinion, when roleplaying give more than a one sentence response! It can be hard and quite annoying when trying to respond to something like "She sat down and licked her paw." That doesn't give much character interaction nor description and isn't as pleasant to read. Now of course no one expects paragraphs (Unless of course you joined an advanced roleplay, as explained in the post above) When people respond to your posts they will most likely "like" your posts so you get a notification. This is very helpful and I assume many people would appreciate if you did that when you respond. Brownie covered most everything above but I just wanted to add this here I hope you find everything here to your liking! We have the best mods, and a great community. I'm Nebulae, if you need anything feel free to shoot me a message! Welcome to the Forums!
