The St. Claire family, run by the matriarch Scarlett St. Claire, has lived on Oldgarden Way in some form or another since the year 1927, making this their well-established territory. Their rule, however, is interrupted when the Dimir family- another coven- unwittingly moves in next door. There was once a time when such an act would lead to an all-out territory war between the two covens; however, in modern times indiscriminate murder tends to bring unwanted attention from human authorities, and so the two families are left passive-aggressively and (mostly) non-violently fighting over the territory that is Oldgarden Way.

The St. Claires are a traditional and proper family of vampires, truly a coven rather than an actual family. Most of the members are not actually related by blood and instead were adopted when or after they were turned. The St. Claires are traditional both in their human and vampiric views; they tend to be reserved, reclusive, and very careful with their secret. The St. Claire family built their current residence in 1927 when Scarlett St. Claire, the founder and matriarch of the coven, bought the land. Though some members have come and go and those who stay change their names and appearances and disguised themselves in other ways so as to not raise suspicion at their lack of aging, the family has remained here in some form or another for decades. They take pride in their name, family, and vampirism, even if the latter is secret, and are concerned about keeping their proper image.

The Dimirs are a more modern family, as would be expected when humans and vampires mingle. They are a true family in that most of the members are actually related rather than adopted after turning. They have no problem mingling with the humans in their community, and are a bit less uptight about keeping their secret (as long as they don't reveal it in a spectacular and undeniable way, that is). After all, most humans wouldn't (and don't) believe in vampires even if they were literally staring them in the face. The Dimirs are really not especially concerned about being proper or traditional, and really in any way except their biological differences are just like the human families they live alongside. They are not really a true coven, and instead are more like a normal human family that just so happens to be made up mostly of vampires.

Vampires are, as most lore suggests, nigh-immortal, blood-sucking creatures of the night. However, not everything you hear about vampires is true: they are not undead, they are not truly immortal, and they do not burn in the sunlight. The facts below should clarify most of what you need to know in order to play a vampire in this roleplay. More facts may be added as needed, and if you have any questions, feel free to ask.
β° Vampires are not immortal, but they do age very slowly. As in, about 1/20 the rate of humans (they age 1 year for roughly every 20 that pass). However, this does not take effect until a vampire reaches about 15-17 years old (it varies slightly depending on the vampire), and prior to that, vampire children will age like humans.
β° Vampires are not (all) made, most are actually born. A human can only even be made into a vampire if they already have some vampiric blood in them (about 20% at minimum), which is fairly uncommon (most people have about 5-15%). Thus, vampires are not sterile, but just significantly less fertile than humans (they only manage to conceive about every 10-20 years). When a vampire and human reproduce, the child is born a vampire if the mother is a vampire, and a human if the mother is human (however, they can be turned later).
β° Vampires tend to be light-haired and light-eyed. People with red or pale blonde hair as well as green or blue eyes generally have more vampiric blood than those with brown & black hair and brown eyes.
β° Vampires are not instantly burned by the sun; however, strong sunlight is incredibly uncomfortable, and they tend to sunburn very easily. They similarly have an increased sensitivity to all kinds of heat, including fire or just high temperatures.
β° Vampires can be killed just like any human can, not just with special bullets or stakes through the heart. However, they are far more difficult to kill, as they have a greater tolerance to shock, infection, disease, and other killers, and heal much more quickly than humans. Because they heal so quickly, however, they also scar far more easily. Also, things that would permanently disable a human (severing the spine, permanent blinding, removing limbs) affect a vampire just as much, even if their visible wounds from it heal quicker.
β° Vampires do not need to kill a human when drinking their blood, though it does take a measure of self-control not to go into a blood frenzy. As such, most vampire children when they first start to feed are started off with animals- generally pigs- so that it's not that big of a deal if they accidentally kill. Animal blood can be used as a substitute for human blood, but it is not as tasty and not as filling, so a vampire will have to feed more often and might not feel as well-fed and alert.
β° Vampire children do not need to start feeding until they are about ten years old. All vampires, children and otherwise, do still need "human" food and not just blood- however, feeding adolescent and adult vampires don't need as much "real" food as long as they're getting enough blood. They tend to prefer more meat, and less cooked, than most humans.
