--You are Rattlesnake Now--
The dreams of a shape shifter who is stuck in the form of a rattlesnake. Who but the shape shifter knows what they are. But I believe that even a shape shifter would find it strange to dream of starry cats.
This shape shifter had been stuck for so long in this form that it had forgotten its name, and it had almost forgotten it had ever been anything other than a rattlesnake. Yet it dreamed of cats.
A she-cat looked down at the unmoving, in fact the frozen, shape shifter.
“You truly believe this is a good idea Owlstar?”
In the starry forest, one starry cat nodded.
“He comes from far away, but he was born a cat, just like you and me Mothflight.”
In the shape shifters dreaming mind it thought it odd that the cat knew what he had been born as. How could he?
The cat, Mothflight, looked back behind her, “If you believe that he can help teach the clans then I shall trust you Owlstar. But I do not think it will work.”
The shape shifter, unable to move, could do nothing as the blue she-cat jaws wrapped around his frail body.
The shape shifter was afraid. His point of view changed as the cat lifted him into the air and then started to walk with long, jerky strides that the shape shifter was not used to in this body.
He could do nothing as Mothflight walked. But it was not a long walk, only a few of her pawsteps. Then she dropped him.
As he dropped his small heartbeat like mad, prepared for the pain and for him to wake up from this dream. But all that happened was that his body hit something cool and wet. He’d been dropped into a pool of water.
Now the shape shifter was fearful for another reason. Drowning. He couldn’t move, couldn’t get to the surface. When above water he could at least breathe and move his eyes. In the water, if he breathed, he would die.
This no longer felt like a dream. It felt very, very real. The shape shifter couldn’t breathe and he was slowly dying under the water. Just as the point came when he need, he really needed, to take a breath something began to change. Slowly, almost too slowly, his rattlesnake body was changing. It began to expand and change. It felt just like the shape shifter remembered changing felt. He was changing. With a surge of his new body, he broke the surface of the pool gasping. Slowly stepping out of the water, (he had legs!) he shook his fur.
He was now the same height of the she-cat, Mothflight, who was standing in front of him now. He was a cat again!
“Rattlesnake,” growled Mothflight. The shape shifter looked behind the blue cat, seeing the other cat that must have been Owlstar.
“Rattlesnake!” this time the growl was louder.
He turned his gaze back to Mothflight.
“I don’t know whether to thank you or hate you,” said the shape shifter, testing out his voice. “However, I must say, I do not think that my name is Rattlesnake.”
The she-cat frowned, looking displeased, “I don’t care what your name was. You are Rattlesnake now.”
The shape shifter curled his tail, which was longer then on a normal cat, around himself. It was striped at the tip, like it was trying to imitate a rattlesnake’s rattle.
The shape shifter smiled a little at Mothflight, but it wasn’t a nice smile. In a language he had learned well over his years as a snake he said, If Rattlesnake you call me then rattlesnake I be.
Mothflight ignored what he said, she didn’t understand it anyway, “We are Starclan, we wish for you to go to the four clans and teach them.”
Rattlesnake cocked his head and it was a little mocking, “What would you have me teach them?”
“You’ve been many things over the years, you know things. You could teach them,” said Mothflight, unfazed by Rattlesnake’s mocking nature.
“This is true,” said Rattlesnake. “But what would that do for me?”
“Think of it as a favor to us for changing you back into a cat,” said Owlstar dryly, cutting in.
Rattlesnake turned his pale eyes on him. He was silent for a long few seconds. Those seconds stretched. Just when Owlstar started to squirm under it Rattlesnake turned back to Mothflight. “Very well,” he said. “And yet, I do not have my memories? You know what I’m talking about. I was only a rattlesnake for nine seasons. Before that? I think I was a cat. But was I? I want my memories back if you wish me to do anything.”
Mothflight and Owlstar both looked a little wary, not liking Rattlesnake’s demands. However, there must have been some information that they thought could help their clan, locked inside his head.
Owlstar finally nodded, “I…all right. Drink from the pool behind you.”
Rattlesnake gave a shifty glance from the corner of his eyes and then turned, sweeping his tail around so Mothflight and Owlstar had to step back to avoid it.
Rattlesnake crouched down and lapped at the cool water. And then it was like a small stream of water washed away the clouds inside his head. He was now totally himself.
He raised his head from the water, slowly and with great hesitation.
“I am immortal,” he mumbled in astonishment, to softly for the Starclan cats to hear.
“Will you now help our clans?” asked Mothflight.
Rattlesnake turned back. He had met some of cat like this before. Cats that were dead, but still walked in dreams.
He tilted his head, contemplating what he had said. The deal he had made. “Oh, I shall help the clans. I shall help them by not going. But you wish to have me teach them…Fine. I shall teach them. But not this season. Not next season. In fact, I shall not teach then anything until a hundred years have passed. Because I know what I bring.”
He was now smiling, and it had more teeth in it then was polite.
“As you said, I’m a Rattlesnake. What you just heard was my rattle. See you in a hundred years.”
And with that, Rattlesnake jumped into the pool of water.
Years later younger Starclan cats would wonder how he knew that the very center of the pool was a way out of dreams. They would never know the answer. They would also never know that Rattlesnake whispered something to himself as he fell into the pool. Something that would have just confused them.
“I’m sorry. I know what I could bring…”
THE SNAKE’S PROPHECY
Rattlesnake had only been in Starclan once before. Seventy years had gone and past. And yet, despite his promise he found himself on the edge of clan territory. He had kept his ears and eyes open for traveling companions over the years. It was how he knew that the clans had moved to a lakeside home. He had gathered a small following by now, lose and uneven. More a group of rogues and loners that happened to be in the same area than anything else. It was nothing like any loyal group that he had known. They hunted and fought each other. Killing even. He had no control. They moved around, without a home. And with each move Rattlesnake lost more and more of his control.
Rattlesnake stood out the outskirts of Windclan territory, alone and without anyone to guide him.
He thought of the promise he had made, mostly in anger, seventy years ago. He was bound by it. As prophecies went his had come true.
Promises that should never be made. Scars must later be paid. When midnight comes on the last day you are bound, your own history laid.
Rattlesnake sighed and trotted along the border. Was he really meant to destroy this place? Or was he meant to kill these cats? It didn’t seem right, but prophesy had to be fulfilled didn’t they…
Stepping a few feet into a running stream Rattlesnake padded along the bank. His life was so…hard. Choices had to be made and cats who he had hoped would make good traveling companions had just turned out to be ruthless fighters.
Walking along, paws stepping into the water and out of it again in an easy rhythm, Rattlesnake slowly became aware that mist had started to pool around his paws.
“Starclan,” he muttered his voice dark.
“Were you expecting me?” asked a voice behind him.
Rattlesnake didn’t turn, his shoulders hunched over he answered, and “I had a feeling that if I entered clan territory someone would contact me.”
“Of course you guessed right,” said the voice. Male, thought Rattlesnake. Middle aged. But that didn’t tell him much.
“I’ve heard a lot about you,” continued the voice, sounding proud of himself. “Be glad I was the first Starclan cat to find out you were in the territory. If Mothflight had heard I don’t think she would have been as lenient.”
“So…” prompted Rattlesnake. “You are not here under Starclan’s orders. You are here for yourself only. That means you want me for something. Something Starclan would disapprove of?”
“Right on all accounts except one,” said the voice. “I am, in fact, here for all of us.”
Rattlesnake stiffened, his eyes growing wide. Slowly he turned around to gaze at the group of five cats behind him.
It was not the oddest thing he had witnessed on his travels, but Rattlesnake had to emit that it was at least in the top ten.
A cat of shadows and that smells of old, molding leaves, was standing on the far left of the group. He was battle scared and hunched his shoulders a little.
Beside him was a black she-cat with a hollowed look, like she was in mourning. She looked worn. Other cats were around, but the mist that had accompanied them covered them, making them indistinct shadows.
“So,” said Rattlesnake, turning back. “Who might you be?” He was curious and maybe a little wary of what these cats wanted.
“I am Hawkheart of Starclan,” said Hawkheart. “And the cats behind you are Swoop of Chestnut Hawk, Broken Shadow, Clawface, and Star Flower. We come from many times and from many places. All because of one prophesy.”
Rattlesnake bowed his head, “I was unaware that any of the clan’s ancestors knew of my prophesy. How did you come to know it?”
Hawkheart flicked his tail, brushing off the question as unimportant. “We simply gathered each others gathered information. It was simple to follow, as some kittypet or other said your paper trail. You’ve gathered quite an army behind you, all deadly, but loyal? This doesn‘t matter anyway, what matters is that we are all united, despite our ‘leaders’ wishes. We want to give you a gift; something that will take you along a path that we hope will benefit all of our sides.”
Rattlesnake flicked his ear, waiting for more information.
Hawkheart’s eyes narrowed, “This is my way for asking you if you will accept.”
Rattlesnake shrugged, “Depends. This gift will mean what. Since you know the prophecy as well as I then you know that I will end up destroying your clan.”
Hawkheart nodded, “This is unavoidable.”
“This is preferable,” hissed Clawface before Hawkheart shot him a scorching glare.
“So…?” prompted Rattlesnake. “If you are giving me a gift, a powerful gift by the sound of it, then this means you want to see the clans destroyed. That really doesn’t make too much sense from where I’m standing.”
Hawkheart looked like he was trying desperately to hold onto his anger. “Prophecies come true no matter what any cat does. The best any ancestor can do is to try to point the prophecy cat or cats in the direction that is lest…lethal. This is what we are trying to do. If we give you the gift it means you will undoubtedly take over, but it may also mean some of our descendents will live. The power of invincibility in battle and the power to give it to others.”
Rattlesnake didn’t understand, in fact, he was a little outraged, “Not being able to get wounded or killed in battle! Are you mad? This means I’ll never be able to die! Don’t you know that dying in battle is the only possible way I could die?”
Clawface came to stand beside Hawkheart and Hawkheart did not look happy about the change in sitting arrangements. “Look, don’t you realize that we have all thought long and hard about this? You don’t want to kill cats, but you know that you’re meant to destroy the clan. Isn’t it better you do it on your terms instead of the prophesy’s terms?”
“Yes!” yelled Rattlesnake. “But they are your terms, not mine.”
“Well then,” growled Clawface. “Make them.”
“What?”
“Make them your terms. You do the planning. The gift is yours whether you want it or not, but you get to use it how you see fit. Give the power to those you see fit. Make it yours. You will destroy the clans as we know them. So make them yours.”
Rattlesnake felt like attacking these cats. How dare they. How dare they take his life away from him?
“That’s the spirit,” said Hawkheart, his voice defeated. For the first time Rattlesnake wondered if he had really want to do all this. But it seemed to have been done anyway.
The mist began to fade, as well as the cats around him.
The last voice he heard before the vision faded was Hawkheart’s.
“Look, please, just don’t take out any anger you have on them. Extend to them the same laws you will soon make for your group. Let my descendents have you to look up to. Maybe you can still fulfill your promise to Mothflight. Teach them.”
Rattlesnake’s group is set up much the same way as the clans. This is unsurprising since it is made up of clan cats, tribe cats, and rogues. Similar to Bloodclan in the sense that the rankings are lose and only vaguely define what the cats can do. (Example: The medicine cat could be expected to fight just like all the other cats.)
Leader: [The position of leader is permanent. Since Rattlesnake is immortal, invincible and immune to all poison and sickness, deputy is the highest position you can reach.]
Deputy: [The place of deputy once did not exist. This was in the time before Kite and Nightmare, when the group under Rattlesnake was mostly made of power-hungry rouges. Nightmare is the anchor that ties all the cats together.]
Medicine Cat: [The is a mostly new position. It was created around the time Newsong was a kit. In the early days of Rattlesnake’s group, the cats were not as invincible as they later became. Sickness could still kill then, as could most natural causes. A small part of the ‘clan’ was also made up of cats who did not accept Rattlesnake’s offer of invisibility.]
Warriors: [Cats from the age of six moons to any age fill this position. Elders are put into this position as is any cats with disabilities. Age or ability to fight or hunt means nothing to Rattlesnake. What I mean is that he focuses more on what is inside a cat. Smarts or ability to think outside the box is just as important. Warriors are grouped into two groups. Cats who are gifted with invincibility are the most extensive fighters. They can’t be hurt in battle, so chasing off predators are their job. This is also not saying that cats without this gift are not allowed to do this, but Rattlesnake does not likes his cats to get hurt, so ungifted warriors who fight are frowned on. The second group is where the cats that hunt are grouped. Cats who are ‘elders’ or cats who have disabilities could be grouped in either of these categories, depending on individual talent.]
Apprentices: [The place of apprentice was mostly created to help train the new kits that Rattlesnake brought in. The oldest of the apprentices, now almost an adult, is Patch. He has been trying to prove himself to his ‘clan’ ever since he was brought to it. He will not accept the role of Warrior until the other cats accept him.]
Queens: [This position is rarely filled. Pregnant cats are rarely in this ‘clan’, mostly because the power to be invincible has the side affect of cats not being able to have kits. But when there are Queens, they are treated very well. ]
Kits: [Kits are not usually born to Rattlesnake’s group, as accepting his offer of invincibility has the side affect that means the gifted cats cannot have kits. Rattlesnake has gotten around this problem by letting in cats that do not want invincibility. He also adopts kits and has a rule that all kits must be rescued if in danger. Adopted kits come from many different places. Rattlesnake has traveled far and wide with his group and has picked up kits along the way. Both tribe kits and clan kits or kits that come from groups like them. All are mixed together in this group.]
[It has been remarked that the cats of Rattlesnake’s group do not have any elders. This is not true. Cats grow old in this ‘clan’ but there is no pacific place set aside for elders. Elders take an active role in Rattlesnake’s group, helping queens and telling kits stories. Even going so far as to do light duties as mentors. Rattlesnake sees this as helping the group, so they still have a place in the larger body of Warriors.]
We took it on ourselves to try to interview Rattlesnake who made this group what it is today.
Me: Rattlesnake, I’m glad you could join us for this interview!
Rattlesnake: You are of course aware that interviews are a twoleg thing. Seems kind of odd…
Me: Oh, we know! But we are masters of odd. So, we had some questions…?
Rattlesnake: Go ahead. I’ll answer as best I can.
Me: Okay then! Was Starclan the cats who truly gave you all your powers? We have some conflicting sources.
Rattlesnake: Hum… They did and they didn’t. I was born with the ability to shape shift and of immortality, so they didn’t give me that power as far as I know. Starclan gave the power of illusionary stars to me, but the only purpose it seems to have is for amusing kits. Hawkheart of Starclan, Clawface of the Dark Forest, Swoop of Chestnut Hawk of the Tribe of Endless Hunting, Star Flower of the Clans Ancestors, and Broken Shadow of the Ancients gave me the power of invincibility, they even set the side affect that I couldn’t have kits to make sure I couldn‘t pass on the gift. But that power has mutated, possibly because I already had powers to begin with. Either way I can now pass on the gift through a simple ceremony, but now that gift that I have given to others has also mutated. In a hundred years, I am unsure on what mutation on the gift will turn up.
Me: Wow, Mister Rattlesnake that was a long answer. So the gift of invincibility was given to you why?
Rattlesnake: …I don’t know.
Me: Okay, different question. I heard the rumor that you and Kite were a couple.
Rattlesnake [who is now blushing]: No, we were not a couple. Nightmare is still spreading that rumor? I can’t believe him!
Me: Okay, let’s try another approach. Kite was expecting wasn’t she?
Rattlesnake: I can’t have kits. So I still have no clue at what you are getting at.
Me: Well, since they were not your kits, who was the father?
Rattlesnake: How should I know? On top of it, I can’t see how she could have kits either! She has the same power that I do, so she can’t have kits.
Me: And yet she was pregnant?
Rattlesnake: Yes…
Me: I take it your power was never given to a pregnant queen? So you have no idea what happened to her or to the kits after she left?
Rattlesnake: The answer to both is no. Can you change the subject? I don’t like dwelling on my past.
Me: Very well!
Rattlesnake: Thank you.
Me: Since I’m still attached to the subject of relationships, I hear that you are currently in one with Nightmare?
Rattlesnake: [who answers warily] Yes…
Me: So it’s true?
Rattlesnake: Yes.
Me: Any details you’d like to share on that? Any plans? What I’m getting at is does your ‘clan’ or anyone else know?
Rattlesnake: Yes. It’s not like I’m keeping it a secret. Many of my cats know I’m gay.
Me: Did Kite?
Rattlesnake: You’d said you’d change the subject!
Me: Sorry, sorry. Anyway, did she?
Rattlesnake: …Not at first.
Me: Ah, I see, she left because of that? She loved you then?
Rattlesnake: Since I can’t seem to get out of this. Yes to both, she probably did.
Me: …I’m sorry.
Rattlesnake: [small voice] I am too.
