"CHASE!" A familiar voice shouted "CHASE WAKE UP!" It continue, now shaking me in an attempt to wake me up.
I groan and roll over to look at who dared to disturb me this early in the morning, it was my older brother, Gavin.
"Hurry up and get ready dude, I told you yesterday you were going to have to wake up early so you could come with me to work." He said in a commanding tone.
"Alright, alright, i'm getting up." I
replied sleepily.
"Good, i'll give you a few minutes to get ready, some toast is in the kitchen, meet me at the truck." He said before rushing out my door, down the stairs. Leaving me to quickly get changed, putting on a thick brown leather coat that hung on a rack in the stairwell as I wobbled down trying to put on my boots.
I looked in a small mirror by the front door and did a last check to see if i forgot anything, then grabbed my toast and rushed out the door to the already running truck out in the small driveway.
"Took ya long enough." He says in a sassy tone while I get in the truck. He wastes no more time and begins quickly backing out of the driveway. Leaving our quaint, oddly shaped, one and a half story house in the dust as we rushed up the snowy street.
After finishing off my toast I finally woke up, realising what we were about to do. I, was going to see where my brother worked, meet his friends and co-workers. I have been waiting for this day for a long time. My brother always told me stories of his job, dumb stories of his co-workers, and how he was going to change the world someday with what he made at work. But, he never told me what it was he did at his job, he always just said that he was 'changing the future of mankind' whenever I asked him about it. Which is why i'm really excited to see his work and what he is working on.
We took a sharp turn, and began to stop.
"Well, we're here." He said getting out of the old beat up truck that only ran because Gavin refused to let it give up. I pushed open the heavy door and rushed out into the parking lot. I shut the door behind me and rush over to my brother, then I noticed the huge dome that stood before us. I had never seen such a large building before in my life, it was easily a thousand times bigger than our tiny house. And it was a lot prettier too, the sun glistened off green streaks that seemed to pulse through the concrete building.
"You work there!" I asked in a confused sense of amazement.
"Yeah, I do. It's nothing special though." He replied with a slight chuckle.
"Nothing special!?" I scoffed "You must be kidding, it is by far the coolest building I have ever seen. Just look at those green marks, i've never seen any building have that. How'd you make those?"
"Oh, well I guess you have a point. It is pretty unique" He said, pretending not to have heard my question.
"And why isn't there any snow on top, or in the parking lot?" I asked, puzzled, because everything on the way here was covered in snow, but yet, the building and the parking lot were not only snow free, but dry.
"It must not have snowed here last night." He replied in an unusually snappy tone.
"But look, over there is some snow." I said, ignoring his tone, pointing over at the snow that sat near the edge of the building, surrounding the parking lot and building.
"Well... They must have gone around and cleaned up the dome and parking lot." He said in a uncertain voice
As we were nearing the entrance to the dome I overheard my brother mumble 'maybe this isn't a good idea under his breath, then motioned for me to stop.
"Yeah? What is it?" I asked, confused as to why we were stopping, but I had a feeling it wasn't going to be good.
"Well, Chase, the people I work for here aren't the nicest people in the world. And they probably won't like you asking a whole bunch of questions. So try to keep it minimal, okay?" He replied in a serious half joking tone that he naturally leaned to.
"Alright, I will keep it minimal. I promise." I said hoping that we wouldn't have to turn around and go home to our old little house.
"Good, now come on, let's get inside before they get mad at me for you being late." He said jokingly before, swiping a card on a lock on the door, then swinging the thick glass door open.
I entered the concrete dome and it was just as amazing on the outside as on the inside. The green streaks appeared to be the same on the inside, they even seemed to be pulsing, and the floor and wall was coated with a black marble shine. The dome seemed to be completely open, no inner walls at all, just busy people in grey outfits busily walking... no they weren't walking, they were standing! It was the ground that was moving instead! There seemed to be some sort of path that lead all over the dome that moved everyone on it, and all you had to do was walk onto it, and walk off when you needed to leave the path.
Before I got to stare at it for too long Gavin called for me. He was standing beside a young woman who also was wearing the same grey uniform as the other workers. She was sitting at a large curved desk that was about stomach height and shared the same color scheme as the rest of the dome.
"May, this is my little brother, Chase. Chase this is my co-worker, May." Gavin said as I approached the desk they were at. I waved let out a shy hello. May was a cute girl, she kept her long brown hair in a ponytail, her eyes were a bright blue, which stood out against her pale white skin.
"Awwww! He's so cute!" She screamed excitedly, running out from behind the desk, and tightly hugging me. I wasn't expecting to be hugged, nor for her to be so much taller than me. She was at least a foot taller than me.
"I'm not cute, i'm 14, I don't get to be cute." I said defensively, after slipping out of her hug.
"He's like a mini you Gave!" She teased.
"Yeah, he's like me alright." He admitted jokingly, then winked at me.
May was the easily excitable girl Gavin had told me about, and it made me a little uncomfortable, so I was eager to get going and see the rest of the dome. "So, what all are you gonna show me Gavin?"
"Hold on now, I can't show you everything, I do still have to work you know." He said half jokingly. "I'll let you meet a couple of my other friends that i've told you about and then I got to get some work done, sound good?"
"Sure, let's go!" I replied eagerly.
"Hop aboard." He said as he stepped on to the moving path that ran all around the dome.
"You two have fun, and stay out of trouble!" May said, waving goodbye.
We waved back as we rode the moving path towards back left. it wasn't too long before we came across something that I could only assume to be doors, they were octagons oddly enough, they were a couple feet taller than me, and the edges were cleanly lined with the green that crazily covered the rest of the building. After we passed a few doors, I followed Gavin, and walked off the path, standing in front of one of the doors. Gavin gave the door a solid knock, and after a moment or two it opened, or rather it shattered, spilling a whole bunch of little black shards all over the floor. It made barely any noise, and gently spilled out to my feet. It didn't seem to be sharp so I wasted no time in following Gavin who had already headed in.
As soon as I entered, the shards that used to be the door, suddenly started moving, they began to remake the door. In the blink of an eye the door was there again. Solid, and strong, as if it was an immovable wall. But before I could question it I was being introduced another one of Gavin's friends. This guy was big and muscular, he had his sleeves ripped off because it looks like they wouldn't fit his huge arms. The more I looked at him, the more I realise he wasn't a man at all, but rather a gorilla!
"Yo Gavin! How's it going man? I see ya brought pipsqueak with ya today, and he seems to be mighty fascinated with that door." He said in a deep voice that rang with a welcoming friendliness that I had never heard before.
"Yeah, it's his first time here so he isn't used to how everything thing works yet." Gavin replied while giving him a strange look that I can't quite figure out.
"Well pipsqueak, i'm a good friend of your brother here, the name is Dylan Cermon, but call me DC for short." He said with a light chuckle.
"Hi...DC, i'm Chase." I replied, shocked, that not only was my brother friends with a gorilla, but a talking gorilla, what are the chances of that.
"No need to be shy pipsqueak, I won't hurt ya." He said while reaching out one large hand towards me, rustling up my dark green hair. I laughed and looked up at him with a grin, it was little weird, but I felt like I had been friends with him my whole life.
Gavin looked down at his old silver watch and realised that he didn't have much time before he had to get to work.
"Well it was nice seeing you again DC, bu i'm going to have to head out. I still have some work to-" Started Gavin, but he was interrupted by a blood curdling scream that split through the air, followed by flashing red lights and sirens.
"Gavin, you don't think this is... that project... do you?" DC said in an extremely concerned, and slightly scared voice.
"Wha, what's going on? What project?" I cried out, the scream startled me and the alarm was, alarming, I'm confused, and just trying to figure out if i'm safe.
"I... I hate to say DC, but it has to be that, nothing else could start a code red lockdown with a scream like that... We need to get out of here, and fast. I'm going to round up the rest of the crew. You take Chase and May and meet me there." Gavin replied, before darting out the door.
"I... What, DC what's happening, what's my brother doing!?" I screamed in confusion, the alarms still blaring loudly in the background.
"Look, pipsqueak, something went wrong, and your brother went to go get some help for us. That's all you wanna know, trust me." He said as grabbed a small weapon from a cavity in the wall and shoved it into one of his pockets just in case. Then he picked me up and put me on his shoulder then ran out the door to go find May.
We exit the door and find everyone who had been calmly riding the moving path earlier running around in a crazed panic.
"Pipsqueak, do you see her anywhere? Is she okay?" DC asked as he tried to find a way through the chaotic crowd.
"Uhh... AHA! I found her, she's up at the front, hiding behind the desk! But a lot of people are running from there, so we better hurry!" I shouted back after catching sight of the girl cowering behind the desk.
"Roger that pipsqueak!" DC shouted back and bolted off as fast as he could, weaving quickly through the crowd, only knocking over a couple people in the process. But before we got all the to May, DC stopped dead in his tracks.
"Pipsqueak, i'm gonna need you to do a favor for me." He said in a dead serious tone.
"Yeah sure, but we need to get May!" I quickly said trying to follow what my brother said do as quickly as possible.
"Close your eyes." He responded firmly
"Wait, what?" I questioned, once again being oblivious to what the situation is.
"JUST DO IT OKAY!" He shouted back
"I...okay their closed." I said shutting my eyes tight. We don't have time to argue, whatever was going on seemed to be really urgent and i just want to save May.
"Good, now don't open them till I say so." He responded firmly, and began moving again.
"Dylan!? Dylan is that you!?" May screamed.
"Yes it's me May, I don't have much time to explain, so just come with us." DC said calmingly, before grabbing her and putting her on his other shoulder.
As he began running through the crowd again, another horrible piercing scream made me flinch. But we continue on, running away from the screaming.
"Alright, you can open your eyes pipsqueak." DC said with a small sigh of relief.
"Finally." I said excited at being able to see what's going on again. And we had made it a decent ways away from front desk where saved May, but i was confused to why we stopped here. At this large cavity in the wall, that was lined with green like the doors. "Why are we here DC, what's going on?" I ask curiously.
"You'll see in a minute, just keep a look out for your brother for me." DC replied calmly, before turning his attention towards May. "So are you alright May? Nothin broken or bleedin?" He asks in a concerned voice.
"Oh yeah i'm fine, it's my precious desk that got hurt. But thank god it was there protecting me, I could have died!" She said
"You didn't happen to get a good look at it did you?" He asked hesitantly.
"No, I didn't, but I know some other people got too good of a look." She replied sadly.
"Well at least you got out alive. We need you after all" He replied in an attempt to be more cheery.
"Hey! I see him, he is running this way!" I shouted, and began waving at him, being happy to see that my brother was returning safe.
"Oh good, we can get the party started!" Replied May as she climbed off DC's shoulder and walked into the open area in the wall. DC lifted me down beside May and then sat behind us.
My brother and 4 other people arrived from the chaos of the crowd and fit themselves into the space.
"Alright team," Began Gavin as the space they were on began to slowly lower into the ground. "I know we've only done this successfully once before but right now we don't really have an option to do it any other way. If what is out there right, is what I think it is, then we need to get out of here asap. You all know your positions, now get to em! And let's get gone!" He said as the platform they were on reached the bottom and opening up to an enormous aircraft hangar, with a glorious black and green ship sitting in it. It wasn't a giant ship that be fitting for the hangar it was in, but it was fairly large nonetheless. It's wing spread out from the left and right sides back towards the end of the ship in a crescent shape, the middle of the ship was a near perfect rectangle, except for where it bended to match the crescent wings and where, in the middle, it extended forward in a long antenna like structure. The ship featured the same green highlights that the building it was in had, on it's edges. We were headed towards the ship when the roof began to shake. Another ear splitting scream echoed across the building, and it was shortly followed by part of the roof of the aircraft hangar plummeted down to us, landing right beside me. I was nearly crushed by the large object, but what terrified me was the poor defenseless person who unfortunately fell with it. I stood there, shocked, scared, confused, and horrified. It wasn't till DC picked me up and put me on his shoulder till I moved anywhere.
By the time we were all aboard the ship a screach, not from the screams of the people, but from a creature echoed through the hangar, and shortly after it followed whatever made that horrific sound. But before I could check to see what it looked like through the window DC pulled me away to get strapped down for take off
"It's here! Quick everyone, to your stations, we only have one chance to pull this off and go flying out that tunnel before that thing decides we look tasty!" Ordered Gavin, as everyone hurried to get in position for take off.
"Engines?"
"Check capitan!"
"Piloting?"
"Check captain!"
"Tunnel clear?"
"Check captain!"
"Imminent danger?"
"JUST COUNT DOWN ALREADY! IT'S MOVING TOWARDS US FOR GOODNESS SAKES!"
"5...4...3"
"IT'S ABOUT TO JUMP ON THE SHIP!"
"2,1, go go go!"
I groan and roll over to look at who dared to disturb me this early in the morning, it was my older brother, Gavin.
