"I haven't the foggiest notion." She tilted her head, lips pursed in thought, "From what I've read about mermaids, they only eat and swim and fight. And the eating part seems to mainly be for entertainment." She drummed her fingers against the hilt of her gun, tapping out a steady, quick rhythm, "And from what I've seen from mermaids only backs that up. I've heard rumors of benevolent creatures scooping sailors out of the ocean, but these stories usually come from a sailor who's had a few too many. More likely a selkie or just someone swimming by." She dipped her head back to look up at the sky, this was going to play on her mind until she got an answer - it was a mystery, and she loved mysteries. "Does anyone have any theories they want to share with the group?"

Ralif too, had heard tales of mermaids rescuing drowned sailors and whisking them safely to shore, but he'd assumed that's all they were. Tall tales. With Xavier still alive, perhaps there was some truth to it. "None that would be so beneficial as to warrant being shared." He moved to stand beside the captain, peering over the edge of the ship at the dark and now ominously quiet waters. Strange that he'd almost be more comforted should the screeching of mermaids return. "Since it wasn't a selkie, though I believe there's packs between here and Kydos, then quite truthfully I've no idea myself."

Kain rolled his eyes at Whetu's teasing and took the shotgun. He cocked it to make sure it still had all the ammo loaded then focused his attention back on the other two. His mouth was set in a thoughtful line, he wasn't sure what would motivate a mermaid to save someone, and not having the answer to that question bothered him. Kain was always a step ahead and anticipating the next move, not left to wonder what had happened. "Well, I'd assume whatever happened down there has caused the others to run off. They don't seem to be here now and mermaids enjoy making their presence and anger known when they attack, they're less into ambush." He commented and leaned against the ship slightly. "I've heard stories of mermaids who like to bargain or trade for ones life."

"Hm. Quite possibly. But what exactly would she want? There isn't much we can do for her and it isn't as if a mermaid would've heard about our treasure hunt." Railf looked to the other side of the ship to make sure that Xavier being saved had been an elaborate diversion, though rarely were mermaids so crafty, but saw nothing. Well, nothing save the ship itself at least. They'd gone from excitement to nothingness in mere moments, all thinks to a mystery yet to be unraveled. How... curious. Perhaps life on a ship wouldn't be so boring should situations like this present themselves often enough. "Such strange waters, and we've yet to even begin our little adventure."

"Maybe she just saw Xavier was like 'damn.' Decided he was too nice to be eaten." Whetu said, spreading her fingers for emphasis, eyes wide. Stranger things had happened over a pretty face. A tiny grey cloud trickled by overhead and she blinked up at it. After such excitement, she knew she was experiencing a deep in emotions, and closed her eyes briefly. She didn't like being subdued, her fire was her own and one of the few things she held dear to her heart. Swallowing her pride, however, she decided to allow her mind this brief lapse of unusual calmness. "But if we can't decide on the motivation behind what happened, I would like to talk about the effect." She didn't look at him, but this was directed at Kain, "I thought Xavier was dead for a while. Regardless of jokes, we are a small crew. How awful it is that I needed to think one of us had been eaten to fully grasp that. We would've been left vulnerable with a man down. I don't know about you lot, but being vulnerable really grinds my gears." She understated, her jaw locking momentarily. "This ship doesn't have a first mate, and it needs one. Kain, I'm asking you here to step up and fill that." She did look at him now, serious for once, grey eyes unblinking.

Kain gave a shrug, he always liked to know how things worked, but he was more interested in tangible proof, not speculations on why or why not a mermaids may have saved Xavier. Right now Whetu's explanation, though a joke, made the most sense. The mermaid was silver, a unique color for her kind, maybe she took interest in something unique about him. It seemed stupid to him, but people did stupid things, why not mermaids too. He noticed Whetu's change in body language and focused back on her rather than the motives of a strange mermaid. She was upset and something was obviously on her mind. When she decided to speak he watched her, icy blue eyes fixed on the captain as she shared her concerns. It was true, they were small and not as well supplied with as many skills as he would like. His clenched his jaw slightly at the mention of being vulnerable. He had his time being weak, he was done with that now and not looking to return. He arched a brow, genuinely surprised Whetu was asking him to fill such an important position when she could ask anyone else. He met her gaze and after a moment gave her a short nod. "Alright. I'll do it." He agreed, his lips tugged into what could be considered a half smirk.

[ Ah!! I am here! I've had a busy passed couple of days cause this is birthday week. (I'm 18 today!) I'm not very good at staying active so I think I'm going to stick with my one mermaid character and I'll follow along the plot and jump in when you need her. It should be easier to get on now though cause I got a new laptop that works wayyyy better than everything had before. ]

Once the man had been safely pulled back on deck by his crewmate, Airavata had taken to swimming underneath the ship, slowing her speed to match its, her mind wandering as they sailed on. She wondered vaguely how her prize was doing and if he'd survive the cold. He'd been mostly fine, though he'd definitely be sore for a few days or weeks, but from the slight smell of blood in the water she knew he'd at least been dealt one good gash. Shame, though the scar would leave him a proof of an unbelievable story.
The silver creature had lost track of time when she decided to surface. She broke into the air, blue eyes staring up at grey clouds, and rolled onto her back. She relaxed as the current tugged her along, flipping her tail casually to keep herself from drifting too far away from the ship. Aira thought she should be safe now for the most part. She didn't think the humans would shoot her after saving one of their own. And if they didn't try to riddle her with lead, she had more freedom to follow their journey and learn their story. Aira did love a good story. She hoped this one was worth giving up dinner for.

Happy birthday!! )
At once she felt some of the tension in her frame melt a little, and that grin reappeared on her face, "For the good of the cause, or for getting to boss people around?" She asked archly. She was glad, very glad, he'd said yes, not only because it'd be really awkward if he hadn't, but because Kain was a certain kind of person, maybe not the most stereotypically trust worthy but most certainly one she wanted on her team. If she'd been feeling braver, she might've ruffled his hair, but there was still a while to go before they reached that point (she would not forget about it though.) Craning her head back further and cracking her back as she went, she caught sight of a white flash in the distance and rightened herself at once, "That her?"

(Yeah, happy birthday Beast! ^_^) Ralif had watched with a quiet curiosity that likely bordered on rude with how his eye had been boring into his two shipmates. It was an event that had arisen seemingly out of nowhere, though he quite understood Whetu's intentions. In fact, he even agreed with her. What had taken him by surprise was Kain agreeing so quickly, from what little he knew of the man, he'd figured that a position like didn't suit him. Apparently he was wrong.
Before he could make a sly comment towards the pair of them, his attention was drawn off the boat and towards a glint of silver, so strikingly different from the waves of the ocean. Instinctively his hand gripped his revolver tight, but the whiteness on his knuckles faded as he forced himself to relax. "I can't imagine there's another mermaid that could be her twin. I'm not volunteering to go down in the water and find out, though."

"Oh Whetu, nothing I ever do is for the good of the cause. But I like the idea of having a direct role in getting this money, I'm good at getting things done when I'm in charge." Kain gave a wink. He wasn't usually invested in helping people with anything unless they were to owe him a favor later, but this benefited him and it was strange to feel possibly wanted. He was used to people not wanting to be against him, they were a fool if they did, but people were usually to nervous to trust him for something like this. It was an interesting situation. He raised his gun as the silver mermaid appeared from the depth. "I'd assume so. She seems awfully giddy. I think she's following us."

"Who could ever ask for more?" Whetu shrugged, "A mermaid tailing a boatload of outlaws. And on our first night! I think that's rather impressive, considering only one of us nearly died." She admitted. The night had gone quiet now after the gunshots and the splashing below, and the mermaid following them should have been eerie, but it did nothing to dislodge the grin on the captain's face. "We should get to Kydos early tomorrow," She turned her head in the direction of the island, a looming mass of rock in the distance, "And if it was warm in Leibonia, it's gonna be roasting there."
Shall we skip to morning?)

The sun came up on the horizon and the sunrise that day was silent and blue. As if to make up for the horrors of the night before, the waters were calm and clear and all that fear earlier seemed silly, as fears often do in morning light. Whetu wouldn't lie and say she was upset to see that big burning ball of gas, because frankly, she was exhausted. Giving Kain and Ralif a tiny salute, three fingers tapped against her temple, she turned on her heel and headed towards the Captain's quarters, eager to close her eyes. Below deck, old habits from her days at the log camp died hard, and Sonal was up too, removing her ear plugs and rubbing her ears, they felt too light and hollow without anything in them now. She stretched, the big woman taking up a lot of room as she did, and noticed that the layout of people in the room this morning was different from last night. Should she be worried? Honestly she was feeling a little too woozy to be worried at the moment.

(Thanks guys!!!! I think I gave myself a really good shot for getting into nursing school!! I scored well on the science portion and overall so hopefully next term I'll be in!)
Kain gave Whetu a slight wave of acknowledgement, but didn't follow her down just yet. He watched the sun continue to rise and listened to the lazy slosh of the water hitting the side of the boat. His insomnia kept him up often and once the sun was up any chances of sleep were usually forgotten so he decided to linger above deck a little longer. Camilla was sound asleep, she never chose to make herself small when conscious, and that was no different when she wasn't awake. Her long wavy hair was spread out around her, she was on her stomach with half her body under the covers, her arms stretched overhead and one knee bent the other stretched straight. Even in sleep she managed to look pretty, as nice as someone could when they were sprawled out like she was. Xavier too was still out cold, mouth open slightly and blankets piled on him. He had finally warmed up and passed out cold after Camilla had finished his stitches and told him he had to leave that leg out of the covers incase it got snagged. He snored ever so softly, one arm behind his head the other over his chest.

!!!!!!!! well done you!!!!!!!!! You'll be a great nurse!!!!!! )
Sonal pushed herself out of bed fully, rubbing a hand over her eyes to dispel sleep from them. It must have been a calm day out there because the sea sickness was back at it again and she glared into space, forcing herself not to think about it. Coran was fast asleep, still splayed over his dog like a massive toy. He had one leg and arm hooked around him and his mouth was open, making a whistling noise as he snored gently. The sound of someone moving about woke him, none too gracefully, and his dog too, Conall standing up and doing that stretch dogs do that make you hate your own not as stretchy limbs. He got his ears tickled (a solid morning routine) before padding off, to do whatever dogs do in the morning. Coran sat cross legged, blinking and searching for his glasses with open palmed hands.

Thank you!!!! <3)
Camilla woke from the sound of movement, creaks of wood under feet as Sonal stood and Conall trotted off. She fluttered her eyes open briefly then gave a dramatic groan and pulled her covers overhead while she turned to the side. Camilla did not want to wake up, she was tired and certainly not a morning person. Xavier was still out cold, breathing softly in what could be considered a strong exhale rather than a quiet snore. Kain finally decided to go back below deck with the others, he was sure they would all be up soon anyway. He sidestepped the dog as he entered the crews quarters and glanced around, mouth set in a line. Sonal seemed to be the only one up and she looked queasy, Camilla was grumbling under her covers, Coran looked ridiculous trying to find his glasses when the were beside him. Kain rolled his eyes dramatically and grabbed the thin wire frames beside Coran and shoved them into his hand.

Coran hadn't even seen Kain come in, he was white and black, the shadows and the spaces in between them (plus his vision is super bad) so it surprised him to be helped, albeit, a little roughly by the shade, "Oh! Thanks." He put them on and blinked once more, glad to see the world come into focus. "You're up early. Sleep well?" He took out his ear plugs and gave his ears a tiny rub to loosen them up, completely unaware of what had happened the night before. Sonal saw the doctor wake and then retreat, but didn't let her get away with it for long. She walked over and gave her a shove, though she was little more then a lump under covers, "Camilla." She hissed, "Get up or I will rip these covers off you myself." This was, by no means, an empty threat, the big woman was dangerous when queasy. "Do you have any more of the mint?" She asked, trying to keep the desperation out of her voice. It was always worst when she just woke up, the empty stomach always found something to rebel against her.

Kain resisted the urge to roll his eyes at Coran again. He was just so innocent and oblivious and that was rather frustrating. Kain rarely slept well, and when he did he had a gun under his pillow ready for any enemies coming for him in the night. There weren't enemies on this ship, but he had never slept well at sea or in general. "No. You seemed to have." He replied, his tone not necessarily icy, but it had it's usual rasp to it. Camilla let out a squeak of surprise as Sonal shook her and popped her head partially above, her blankets still up to her neck and an unhappy pout on her lips. "I need my beauty sleep Sonal. Can't a girl catch a break." She grumbled and tossed her covered aside as she got up. She reached over to dig through her bag until she found the mint and the other drug she has given Sonal when it got bad before. "Here, mint first. If it's bad hold onto this and you can take it." She handed the supplies over.

"I find it very easy to sleep. It's a talent of mine." He ran a hand through his hair, tugging knots out with his fingers. It had been some time since Coran had lifted a comb, and one could only wonder how much of his hair was naturally curly and how much was man made. "What kept you up? Do you not like sleeping on the water?" He knew this was a common problem for a lot of sailors, he'd struggled at the beginning himself, but he valiantly charged on and had over come this obstacle. He found his shoes and tugged one on, he hadn't untied them the night before and rather then untie them now, he attempted to break every bone in his foot to squeeze them back on. "You don't need any more beauty sleep." She snatched at the back, speaking without thinking, "Thank you." She knew she should leave her alone, but the others were getting up all around them, only Xavier was still out, but he seemed to be suffering from another kind of fatigue, "I should warn you that on previous ships, I have seen Whetu go around the cabins with a bucket of cold water to wake late risers." She popped a leaf in her mouth and chewed it up, glad of the relief it brought.

(Sorry that I haven't been on in a few days, congrats on your test Win! Also sorry for the rather short post. DX)
Ralif had remained on deck as the sun came up, taking the brief few moments alone to ponder exactly what had occurred during the night and what the new day would bring. It was rather cramped on the ship, so even a few moments alone like this were quite the rare little treat. He exhaled softly, the air caught by his mask, and flipped up his eyepatch to let his blind eye breathe for a precious few seconds.

"I don't like sleeping in general." Kain replied flatly. "But I was up because Xavier took a spill, some doe eyed mermaid decided his sorry like was worth saving for whatever reason." He said as if he was indifferent about the boy's survival. He wasn't, but nobody needed to know that, plus being mean was much easier than being nice. Losing a crew member would not be beneficial for their goal and he was very goal-oriented. "Why Sonal, thank you. I know I'm beautiful and it must seem that way, but unless you want to deal with a monster worse then mermaids you'll let me get my sleep next time especially when I'm up late giving stitches." Camilla replied and gave a wink. She began to pull on her boots though, she knew they would reach land soon which was both exciting and nerve wracking.

It's ok!!)
"Xavier fell in?!" His voice rose to a high pitched squeak, and he was fully awake in seconds. "Man, I miss everything." He said, not even really annoyed, just processing what happened. Conall padded back in and gave Kain a sniff before sitting on his master's feet, a heavy dog, though Coran was so used to it by this stage that he didn't even really notice. "I thought I heard gunshots last night, but I wasn't sure cause of the ear plugs. That was a real close call then, huh?" He rubbed the back of his neck, glancing over at the sleeping man's form. Choosing to ignore her comment on beauty, she was about to ask about the stitches when she heard Coran's shriek. The woman frowned, that was odd. It didn't bode well for her superstitions, to have nearly lost a member so early on, but there was no point in sharing that right now. Xavier didn't look too seriously hurt, so either Camilla was a miracle worker at her job or that boy was lucky. "Sounds like quite a night. It will be quite a day too, so I hope youre well rested enough. Kydos is hell on earth." Sonal had only ever been once, and was not eager to repeat the situation. Dust, rocks, monsters and blinding sunshine were not among her favourite things.

Kain winced a little at Coran's unexpected pitch in voice. He grimaced and narrowed his eyes slightly in annoyance. "Yes, with that voice you're going to wake him and we need him ready for today. It's going to be a long." He replied flatly and glanced at Coran as he walked by and paused to acknowledge his presence. He gave him a slight pat on the head, he had nothing against the dog despite his laziness. "A close call, yes." He looked up to meet Coran's gaze. "But I doubt it will hardly be the most dangerous or the last." He wondered how Coran would handle the rest of the journey. The kid had nearly already destroyed the vessel, Kain wondered if he could even defend himself. "I could have used some more rest thank you very much. But I'll manage." Camilla huffed and began to pull her hair into a French braid. Of course it had to be hot, she wasn't about to deal with her hair down and hot on her back. She grabbed her small leather bag, filled to the brim with medical essentials, but enough to make it light and easy to carry if she had to run. She tucked her favorite knife in her boot and strapped the other to her hip. "What's Kydos like anyway?" She asked.

"There's something worse about little unexpected things like that, then the idea of facing something really big." He mused, playing with Conall's ears, "I mean, there's lots to be scared of on this trip, but there are also lots of things we're not scared of that could still end up being dangerous." He wasn't sure if he'd worded what he was thinking correctly and tilted his head in thought, not unlike the way dogs do when they're confused by something. He wasn't used to the constant threat of danger, sure he'd done a few risky jobs here and there with potential dangers, but nothing that went actively looking for trouble. Meeting Kain's gaze was a little unnerving, so he dropped his own down to his dog's head, scratching along his nose, "Thank goodness I have this fearless protector to defend me." "Awful." She grumbled, slipping on her shoes, simple little pumps that were years old by this stage. Most of the others seemed to be wearing boots, but Sonal had always preferred lighter clothes, due to growing up in the muggy, crowded streets of Lat Sanang. "There is nothing there for anyone but a cheap thrill and possible death. There are no trees." She muttered the last part as if the small island had personally offended her by doing so. She removed her brass knuckle when she unpacked her bag the night before, and set about repacking her small parcel, being used to carrying everything she owned. Sonal suited the life of a migrant worker, and she honestly wasn't sure how she felt about the same company as a constant.

"That's why you plan ahead Coran. Always have a plan, several actually. That's how you account for the unexpected dangers and things that are seemingly not threats." He offered the piece of advice in hopes it would not only prepare Coran, but teach him to live life ready for anything. Kain was always on his toes and expected the worst which was probably one of the reasons he had survived for so long. Unfortunately, Coran didn't seem to have killer instincts. The boy was soft and that was dangerous not only for him but for everyone else. "You also don't rely on anyone but yourself to take care of you." He said flatly as he watched him scratch Conall. "Cheap thrill and death? Sounds fun. The tree thing is a bummer though." Camilla enjoyed trees and forests, really any wonder of nature fascinated her since they contrasted cities so sharply. "Good thing we don't have to live here." She offered a note of positivity since Sonal seemed rather bitter. She eyed the brass knuckles and decided a knife with the knuckles at the end for the handle would be an ideal weapon, if she were to be more of a fighter of course.

Ralif savored his few moments alone, knowing that there would be precious few on the journey. If the crew grew larger, of which there was a distinct possibility given its current small size, this tranquility would grow even rarer. Still, all good things had to come to an end in the name of practicality and self-preservation, and it was with a weary sigh that he flipped his eye patch back down and took long strides across the deck to go below. If the crew liked him and he reciprocated, there was much less chance of betrayal or bitterness. Granted, that idea with Camilla was pretty much shot, but that didn't mean it had to be with everyone else. His footfalls were silent as he made his way down, expensive-and quality-shoes making not a noise as he reached the bottom of the stairs. The last step was done with a touch of a flourish, though no one was paying any mind to see it. His good eye looked around for a conversation partner, or at the very least someone to lurk around.

"But look at his face." The boy grinned, cupping his dog's face and pushing the fur forward to block his eyes, "How could you not rely on him? He's friend shaped!" He ruffled his ears then, cooing little noises that dog owners tend to make, regardless of whether their dog could fit in their pocket or is larger then themselves. "You're just jealous you don't have a large hairy friend to defend you, Kain." He teased, but honestly, Conall didn't do much 'defending', though his large eating habits had defended Coran from obesity for many years, and he was thankful. "Don't worry, he's not biased, he likes you too."
"If we had to live there, I would not last long." Sonal admitted, "Either a dragon or boredom would claim me, I could not live somewhere with nothing but sand and lava." She looked up when Ralif came in, they hadn't spoken much, both of them seeming to only speak when they had something worth saying (unlike some members of the ship). That was everyone but Whetu accounted for, but she had her own room, and was probably crashing there for now. She dipped her head to him, "Good morning." but wasn't quite sure of what else to say to him. The eye patch was standard enough, he must be blinded there, but the mask was unnerving and made her suspicious. Granted, however, no one on this ship was particularity trustworthy as it was, except maybe Coran, but that could all be some act, couldn't it? Speaking to both the doctor and the tall man she said, "Bring your weapon when we land today. I have never known Kydos to be quiet."

Kain rolled his eyes as Coran squished his dogs face around and spoke to it like his child, all the while the big furry beast panted docile and happy. Dogs were too dumb for their own good, but he supposed some people could find them to be loyal companions. Kain preferred not to have friends, he didn't trust people, it was weakness to rely on others not to either betray him or leave this world. He didn't enjoy dealing with either, so it was much simpler not to care. "Great, I was worried." He replied sarcastically.
"I've never seen a Dragon." Camilla observed thoughtfully, although she was fairly certain she would not want to come too close to one. Many breathed fire and all were extremely dangerous despite their beauty. Her green eyes cast to Ralif as he entered, then narrowed slightly. If he would just apologize then maybe she would try to forgive him, but otherwise she was stubborn and what he said would not be taken lightly by her. She pursed her pink lips together with frustration and pulled her smaller medical bag over her shoulder more securely so it crossed over her chest. "How are the people?" She asked Sonal curiously, that was always imports to consider.
