Sal Fisher | Valentine’s Room | striderSal hesitated, brushing a nonexistent strand back where it belonged and busying himself with arranging the confetti in front of him into a neat pile as he tried to think how to reply to that. Because, as much as he was trying to act like this was as light and unimportant of a game as their pillow fight had been…he knew it wasn’t. They’d only blinked in together a handful of times, and they’d never talked about…well, anything along the lines of what this room was implying. Zuko could be dating someone already. Or he could not know what dating was, or he could be homophobic, or any number of other things, and there were better ways to find that out than being placed neatly into a first date together. Besides the fact that the one time he’d gotten what had probably been a crush, he had avoided the person until it went away. So his track record wasn’t exactly spotless, either. “Your bending is always pretty cool,” he admitted finally, tugging lightly on one of his pigtails. After a second, he settled with flicking a piece of confetti back towards Zuko.

“I know,” Orpheus whispered, shaking his head just a little. “I mean… there’s no spring, and there’s barely any fall. The flowers die before they even really have a chance to bloom, and though the summer heat is nicer than winter’s chill…” he hesitated, shrugging his shoulders in such a small motion it was almost unnoticeable. “Spring is my favorite season. I miss the way it used to be when I was a child. I used to go out into the fields and spend all day looking at flowers or trying to make them into poetry or lyrics…” “What was that? I must have had confetti in my ear.” Zuko gave Sal a small smile as he said it, something mischievous glinting in his eye as he quoted Sal’s words back to him. He wasn’t used to getting compliments from people, and doing… whatever this was… felt a lot easier than just accepting the compliment and moving on. He let the confetti hit the collar of his shirt, not bothering to brush it off. It stuck neatly to the red fabric, glinting a little bit as he shifted position. One knee was bent up, his foot flat on the chair as he hugged his knee to his chest. “If there’s something bad about Valentine’s Day you can just tell me, you know? And I’ll stop asking about it. And hey, if it’s really bad, then it’s been a while since I last tried to burn down any of the House’s rooms. I kind of think it owes me one.” He wasn’t actually planning on burning the room down, but if the decorations were making Sal uncomfortable… then he could at least burn them without incurring the House’s wrath, right?

| Eurydice | Valentine's Day | Orpheus | "Mine too." Eurydice admitted. "Those days when you would feel the chill go out of the air, and the sun would come out and you could shrug off your coat." She paused, looking down at the flower in her hands, then back up at Orpheus and his guitar. Her brow creased. "What do you mean, you tried to make flowers into lyrics?"

Sal Fisher | Valentine’s Room | strider“You heard me,” Sal told him, but there was a flicker of amusemenr in his eye as he finally looked up again. The thing was…he felt like he did know Zuko. And he liked being around him, and he wanted to be around him more, but he couldn’t think of any way to say that without it sounding wrong, and the meaning would be lost unless he explained the room anyway. “No, it’s…it’s not that,” he said finally. “I mean…this might end in flames anyway, but…Valentine’s day isn’t a bad thing. It’s just…not a thing I really expected the House to do, that’s all.” Maybe he could half explain it, and then once Zuko figured it out, he could choose whether to actually say it or not…? He was usually better at communicating than this. “So, anyway…I promise I’m not changing the subject, but do you, uh…know what dating is? Has like…a concept?” Zuko wasn’t going to have to burn the place down. Sal thought his face was going to do it all on its own.

“When the world starts to feel alive again,” Orpheus agreed, giving a small nod. “The first bulbs and leaves poking through the snowfall, like the world is waking up from a deep slumber. Like it’s just as ready to greet us as we are it, because it knows how long the winters may seem. And it knows that firewood is running low and we’re all dreaming of sweet berries with our meals…” he trailed off, biting his lip as he looked at Eurydice. “Sometimes… things are so alive that they seem to have words, even when they can’t speak. Flowers… there’s something behind them, some… some power that I think I could translate into song if I got it just right. Like… if I sang it to someone who had never seen a flower, they would understand the essence of it.” “Heard what?” Zuko teased lightly, the look on his face as innocent as he could manage while still looking amused by the whole situation. He was enjoying this. There was nobody else he could just spend time with cracking bad jokes and teasing in a way that didn’t leave any scars. This felt… well, it felt like something he could live with for forever, if he were allowed to. “Right…” Zuko added, expression sobering as Sal grew a little bit more serious. He didn’t know how one topic connected to the other, but he trusted Sal not to lie about this. If it was relevant, it was relevant. “I mean… yeah. Dating, relationships, marriage all that… I’m from a different world from you, but I’m not completely clueless.” There was no fire in the last words, merely a light jab and a heap of genuine curiosity. “I’ve… never really had much experience with it. I mean… I had a girlfriend, but being banished kind of… ruined that one for me, I guess.” He didn’t say he’d been partially relieved to have an excuse to end the relationship. He’d liked Mai, but something about dating her had felt… weird. But his father had approved of the match, and if there was anyone in his world he could picture tolerating for the rest of his life… he guessed it was Mai. Even if that didn’t sound particularly romantic. He pushed down an errant thought as it jumped around at the corners of his mind. If Sal were in his world, maybe there’s be more than one person he could tolerate.

| Eurydice | Valentine's Day Room | Orpheus | "Alright." She answered, taking in his reply. She didn't know if she'd say flowers were so alive that they could turn into poems and songs, but that was the interesting thing about talking to someone else. You got to see their perspective, too. "What does a flower sound like, then?" She nodded to the guitar in his hands. "The little ones, by the side of the road."

Sal Fisher | Valentine’s Room | strider“Do you really want to know?” Sal asked, giving the reply as much weight as he could. “Because I feel like I remember how you answered that question.” He wasn’t sure how he expected Zuko to continue, really…he knew there wasn’t an easy way for Zuko to tell that the topics connected, but it would probably be easier to work out how to explain this if he at least knew Zuko had some concept of it already. “Right…okay. So that’s a thing in your world too? I mean…it tends to be a pretty big thing in mine, but I don’t know how different the words can be from each other.” He hesitated, listening silently for a long moment. That was…good? Maybe good? It meant Zuko wasn’t against dating, at least. This was a terrible way of asking someone out. Probably a terrible way. Actually, it was a terrible way of asking someone out, because Sal couldn’t even make up his mind about whether that was what he was doing. “Yeah…okay, so that’s…sort of related to this. There’s sort of…this day that’s supposed to be about…I don’t know, love, I guess. But like…not in a…” He resisted the temptation to cup his hands over his ears. “So, yeah, I guess the House really…appreciates relationships…”

Touka | Valentines day room | oh dear rex |
Touka blinked, and gave Rex a long, slightly longsuffering look, as if wondering if he would correct himself.
"Well, I won't be eating anything," she said patiently, a note of amusement in her voice. "Cochlea, as it turns out, hasn't found a way to turn ghouls into humans yet."

Matt | Valentines day room | well this is awkward |
"Oh my god, it's you!" said Matt, banging a hand on the table as he suddenly recognized the blinker in front of him. "Dude. What the hell. I haven't seen you in forever. Not since we totally made out in the lodge. What was that about, anyway? I mean, I've kissed PLENTY of people since then but it just seemed kinda weird and like are you even gay? Or was that just like...a thing? Yknow?"

Joey | Valentines day room | bros being bros |
Joey gave him a look over, he was dressed up for a date night but with who? His question would soon be answered as Matt banged the table. “Yeah, it’s me.” He stated in a tone that was matter of fact and tired. “ I was starting to think things would go back to normal. Would help getting some shut eye without worrying about some freak accident that could happen at any time .” Joey placed his hands on the table, palms up and open.
While he wore his mask, it was rather obvious when his light brown eyes were shrouded by fear. “Lower your voice, dude. I don’t want anyone else to eavesdrop.” Joey stole a look around the tables around them. There was another guy in a mask seated with a scarred teen, two pirates maybe, some actor looking couple, and lastly two individuals locked into a tense conversation of their own. Joey turned back to look at Matt, hesitant to reply. “Look, what had happened to you and me, anyone else can’t know. You get it right? Right?” Joey spoke in a hushed tone, leaning in. “Yeah I’ve been bros with bros before and gone with girls,I liked it, but that doesn’t fly with most folks back home. Since, y’know,.” He shrugs, hoping the man seated in front of him won’t rip him a new one. “But dude, why did you kiss-look, I’m okay, no hard feelings, but why me? Aren’t there like a dozen other people here?”

Matt | Valentines day room | what if ur date was homophobic....and u were both guys |
Matt raised his eyebrows as Joey shushed him, but he leaned back accommodatingly, raising both hands in the air. "Okay dude, chill," he said, pretending that he wasn't taken aback by the other man's seeming distress at...well, what hanging out with Matt would probably label you as. "Word of warning though if you don't want to be like, out, you probably should not go around kissing guys," he said, keeping his voice down as requested. "Tends to raise questions."
His cheeks reddened slightly as Joey asked the obvious question, and he looked away, slightly flustered. "I mean, I dunno. You're cute. You got that whole macho joe thing going on, yknow?"

Joey | Valentines day room | girl help! |
Joey refrained from collapsing on the spot. “Didn’t go kissing around dudes on the cheek whenever I saw them! I should have said I kissed a guy. Just one, okay? Made me realize a lot about myself.” Joey explained, exasperated he had to spell it out to the one guy who had been gifting kisses left and right himself. “He was new around, he was a foster kid but his dad was an A-grade jerk. Kept to himself on the edge of Ormond. We’d gotten close and, well, we kissed but stayed friends. Besides, a couple months later he found himself a girl.” He confessed, letting his hands interlock together. “Dude swore he would fight anyone who’d give us trouble and he meant it. Frank wouldn’t throw me under the bus, he’s a good guy but not a lot people give him a chance.”
“Cute and macho, dude you need to check yourself.” Joey plucked a rose from the vase on the table and eased himself back before he’d gone into panic mode. He hadn’t gotten roses in a long while, felt odd getting one now after years of getting none. “You do know those are total opposites but you’ve got experience, so who am I to question?” He presses on, teasing Matt as he started looking like a ripe peach.

Touka | valentines day | the conversation continues |
"I mean, I can," explained Touka, thinking of Yoriko. "In high school I used to because my friend would make me lunches and stuff. But it's like eating rotten or moldy food - really disgusting and I have to go throw up afterwards, so...not really worth it."
She'd more or less come to terms with being unable to taste the things that humans liked to eat so much - she'd had so much self hatred over it when she was a teenager, and it still came creeping back occasionally even now. She didn't let her disappointment show on her face, though, and simply stood up, gesturing to Rex to follow. "C'mon, let's still go. You can tell me what stuff tastes like."
Matt | valentines day room | i don't know what vibe these two have but it's fun |
"Huh," said Matt, leaning forward a little to watch Joey as he told the story. It sounded all too familiar - not all that different from things he'd experienced when he was younger, if he was being honest.
"Hey, they don't HAVE to be opposites!" he protested, aware he was being teased but unable to stop himself from rising to the bait. "Macho guys can be SO cute. You ever seen like, a huge muscle dude hauling his little floofer dog to the vet? Adorable."
He paused for a moment. "So...did you, yknow. Like him? The guy you kissed, I mean."

Joey | valentines day room | the vibes are coming together |
Joey’s heart was thrown around his body as if it were ball in a pinball machine. Extra points goes to Matt, whose small hum made him nervous to hear what the other would say. Plus, he was starting to grow creeped out at the cage that surrounded everyone in the patio area. Cool, love that, definitely feeling safe.
“Sorry pal, not much of a dog guy myself but I can why you’d have the appeal. I have these silly birds, they’re Lahore pigeons. Not the grey ones that walk around the mall.” Joey was unexpectedly fond of the unremarkable birds and found them to be neat. “I can’t really talk about them or I get weird questions, landlord says we can’t have any pets. So in the end I just went behind his back.” He adds in.
Then comes the million dollar question everyone wants to know. “Depends on what you mean, I guess? I liked him, even with his bad side he wouldn’t treat me poorly. I went out with girls but it was like one off dates and none of them really amounted to anything serious. With Frank, it was different. You could even say he was the guy who opened my eyes to who I actually liked. I was too much of a chicken to ask him out after the kiss but we’re on good terms.” Joey idly twist and turns the rose in his gloved hands. “So what about you, mystery man? Anything to get off your chest?”

Rex | vday | cheers
Rex wrinkled his nose at the description. "Yeah never mind, don't eat anything. Doesn't sound worth it." He made his way over to the table that held most of the food. It looked mostly like sweets, honestly, something he was very happy about. "Alright go on," he said, turning to Touka. "Since you can't eat anything you get to pick what I eat." He had little doubt that she was going to find the most disgusting thing and make him eat it, but the thought warmed his heart anyways. It soothed him, how easily they fell back into how things were before she vanished.

Touka | valentines day room | time to eat |
Touka looked over the table, seeing what the House had to offer today. She was, in fact, looking for the most disgusting thing she could find for Rex - which was hard, seeing as it all looked and smelled equally unappetizing.
"Hmmm," she hummed, making a little show out of her decision. Eventually, she pointed to a small heart-shaped box. "Oh gross, that one has oranges in it," she said, seeing the little curls of decorative orange peels drawn on the outside.
Matt | Valentines day room | vibetown |
"Frank, huh," said Matt, squirming under an unexpected tug of something resembling jealousy. "He sounds cool," he finished casually, trying not to sound too much like he wanted to know everything about the dude Joey had been into. Or was still into, maybe.
"Me?" he said, mildly startled at the change of subject, and unprepared for the question. "Oh, well, I've known I was gay forever. Like since I was in middle school. Never thought girls were all that...interesting? I mean, I have friends who are girls. But I wouldn't want to go out with them, gross."

Orpheus let his eyes drift closed as he tried to picture the flower in his minds eye. He could see its petals, the way it swayed very gently in the wind, the way it grew up towards the sun, the manner in which its petals waved at the people going by whether or not they chose to look down and see them. Finally, his fingers moved to pluck a few notes, echoing the fragile yet unbreakable nature of those flowers. It was a haunting melody, full of fortitude and frailty, hope and cynicism. “I mean no offense, but doesn’t dating need to be a thing in every world just so… like… the human species can continue… or something?” Zuko felt his cheeks turning red, shame coloring his face as he waited for Sal to reply. Or maybe not reply… maybe that was something that didn’t need to be replied to. He didn’t really want to think about the continuation of a species, especially if this room wasn’t supposed to be about that. It was about love, which Zuko had never really understood either. His parents most certainly hadn’t loved each other, and he had told Mai he loved her, but he didn’t think that was the same thing. She didn’t make his heart pound the way the stories said. “The House… appreciates relationships…” Zuko echoed after a moment, looking between the other couples. It was interesting that they had all blinked in and each had gravitated towards someone in particular. He got it a moment later. “Oh! So… so you think those two are dating, and so are they, and…” he frowned a little as his gaze reached Matt and Joey. Something warm glowed him at the idea that they might be dating as well, but he didn’t really know how to say it. Or whether Sal would even be okay with it. “So… what are you and I doing here?”

Touka | Valentines day room | sweets and sweets |
Touka reared back, scrunching up her face as the foul-smelling piece of foil hit her on the nose and bounced to the floor.
"F(oops)ing d(oops)!" she protested, already cracking up through her feigned outrage. She wrinkled her nose in disgust as he lifted the chocolate orange up, raising an eyebrow at it. "Ugh, it smells," she complained, watching him skeptically. "Dunno how you humans eat this stuff."

| Eurydice | Valentine's Day Room | Orpheus | In the moments before the song, in the quiet, Eurydice watched Orpheus plan his song. He seemed to get lost in the idea of the music. The notes started slowly, then blossomed into a song. The way he played, she could practically picture the flowers growing in the dust of the road, the way they grew and blossomed and faded. It helped, knowing that they were from the same world, that the flowers he was singing about were the same flowers she herself had seen. She took a moment to glance around the room, seeing who else was there. The two who had been tearful before were now joking, and two other pairs were seated at various tables in the room. Huh. Interesting. Everyone was sort of paired off into groups of two.

Orpheus finished up the song, letting the last note hang in the air for a long moment before his eyes finally opened. He could have kept playing for a long time, if he’d been alone, but he wasn’t. He wasn’t sure that Eurydice would want to sit through an exceptionally long song about flowers, and he was even less certain that anyone else in the world would want to have that interrupting their conversations. He was playing loud enough to be heard, after all, and there was enough sadness in the song that Orpheus didn’t feel perfectly comfortable broadcasting it. “That… was the song,” he murmured, clearly less eloquent without music than he was with it. “It wasn’t really… I don’t know. I just made it up on the spot, so I guess that’s just what the flowers feel like to me.”

Rex | vday | i asked god and this is what was chosen
A sharp laugh left Rex as the foil bounced off of her face. "Well for us it doesn't smell like shit," he said, breaking one of slices off of the chocolate orange. Peering at it, he found that there were little bits of orange embedded in the chocolate. Well. "Bottoms up," he said wryly, then stuck it in his mouth. The chocolate taste hit, sweet and delicate, but laced with the warm familiarity of orange. "Mmmm," he said, covering his mouth with a hand as he chewed. "That's actually really good."

"What, really?" Touka gave him a skeptical look, but he did seem like he was genuinely enjoying it. A little pang of familiar jealousy shot through her, and she pushed it down. She folded her arms, her voice a little softer as her questioning became genuine rather than teasing. "Okay, so...what does it taste like to you?"

| Eurydice | Valentine's Day Room | Orpheus | Eurydice felt that he'd ended the song at a good point- he'd expressed the emotions around the flowers, but any longer and it could definitely start to get awkward. "Just made it up on the spot, huh? That's pretty good." She answered. "And it did remind me of them." Eurydice placed the flower she'd been holding back in the vase- she didn't want it to dry out, and besides, she was sure if she kept running her thumb over the petals she'd end up absent-mindedly tearing one of them.

Touka | Valentines day | wine tasting but with candy |
Warmth bloomed in Touka's chest as she watched Rex enjoy the chocolate, and she made a mental note to grab some for him in her world so she could blink in with it. She'd seen a store that had fancy kinds while she was out shopping - maybe she could stop in there. The look on Rex's face if she did that might even be worth the nauseating smell of a candy store.
Her eyebrow arched at his description, and she shot him a look. "That was the worst description ever," she deadpanned, elbowing him. "Come on, give me something to go on. Here, what about - " She stopped, pulling a black, twisty stick out of one of the baskets. "This one?"

“I’m glad,” Orpheus replied, a shy smile pressing at his lips. “They’re hard to get right because they really do have so much life,” he admitted, cheeks reddening. “I think the flowers here are pretty,” he added, glancing at the ones in the vases. He couldn’t say for certain if he had ever seen that kind before, but they had bloomed very nicely. “Would… you want to try some of the food here,” he asked after another moment, tilting his head towards where Rex and Touka had discovered some of the sweets.

| Eurydice | Valentine's Day Room | Orpheus | "Ooh!" Eurydice's eyes lit up at the idea. Her gaze followed his head tilt over to the table with the sweets on it where the other pair was trying out the new kinds of food. She stood. "The House does that a lot, doesn't it?" Eurydice commented. "Almost like it's setting up a party and putting out snacks." She thought back to some of the rooms she'd been in so far. Yes, there'd definitely been snacks in most of them. "Do you know either of them?" Eurydice asked Orpheus. He'd been in the House longer, so maybe he recognized them.

“It does, doesn’t it,” Orpheus commented, tilting his head a little bit. “A friend of mine doesn’t usually feel safe eating the food here, but personally I don’t think it’s any more dangerous than going into a room in the first place. And… they’re already eating the food, so I think it should be safe.” He gave Eurydice a smile, holding out an arm to invite Eurydice forward. “I met the girl, once,” he said after a moment, then looked at the man next to her. “I haven’t met very many people in this room, though. Just her, but she didn’t give me a name.”
