I'm gonna be a junior so here's some advice that I wish people had given me - don't expect to be friends with the same people that you were in middle school, you all will be going different ways based on your interests -spread yourself out, don't have just a few friends that are all connected, likelihood is some shits gonna happen and you'll get ditched so have multiple friend groups so that way you won't ever be left alone Preferably ppl who share the same ECs- befriend your teachers, even if they are a *******, trust me you'll want to be on their good side it'll make things a lot easier, and this way you can find at least a couple adults you can trust if needed -for you non ace/around people don't worry about relationships, if they happen they'll happen, don't chase anyone or work towards it, you have more important things to do From personal experience, this is very true; just talk to a lot of people and chances are, it will happen (I also think most ppl get into at least 1 relationship in high school, bc you get to meet more people than you ever have in middle school)-don't try to fit in bc you'll just look like an idiot and end up hurting yourself, just be you, likelihood is people will accept it bc they're more accepting in high school than middle school like as long as you're nice no one gives a shit In other words, people are nicer, and chances are, you will have a better time socially in high school than in middle school- don't take "pre-ap" or "advanced" classes unless they are required to get into an ap class, they will whip your ass and you'll be struggling for just one credit you could have gotten just doing a regular class, colleges don't care about pre-ap classes, they want a good GPA and ap classes But the problem is, most of them are prerequisites for AP classes TvT im saying unless you plan to take AP classes to not-make sure you are organized, buy as much supplies you need and learn good study habits, you'll need them HIGHLIGHTERS AND COLORED PENS ARE A MUST -focus on your core classes, while electives may he more exciting they're not what will get you into a good college I disagree- you need at least 1 year of art for most colleges, and while picking an elective over a core class is not good, you also don't want to take core classes exclusively. I know a lot of people that plan on doing that (and take 5 or 6 APs junior and senior year), and while it adds to the rigor of your schedule, it might also stress you out. im not saying you dont need them, just not to prioritize them over others- join a club or two, it'll look good for college and it'll help you make new friends - befriend a few upperclassman or sophomores to help you and tell you a bit about each teacher and whatnot, having insider information really helps - don't do things you wouldn't have done on your own will to impress someone, its not worth it Popularity is virtually nonexistent, just be you & find other ppl like you-if you find yourself in a bad situation socially and can't find a way out call your parents, they'll be upset but also relieved that you are safe plus it shows maturity - don't be afraid to ask anything, if you don't know how to do a problem ask, likelihood is you aren't the only one and others are too afraid to ask as well -if you're struggling with a mental issue, don't go to the same friend every time, find more than one person you can trust with it and preferably an adult who knows how to handle it That's all I can think of for now, if you have any questions just ask

Okay I'm not a freshman, but I am a homeschooler who has been looking at going to the High School that some of my friends are/will be at. But the idea kind of scares me, I have social anxiety so while part of me is all for it the rest of me is freaking out because I'm probably not smart enough for an actual school.
For someone who is looking at going but isn't a freshman, what advice would you have?

You can do pretty much any event you like, including sprinting (:D), distance, hurdling, jumping, throwing, etc. I was too intimidated to do xc last year, but I really regretted not joining freshman year, so I signed up for the summer camp this year and am planning on joining this year. I like it so far, except I don't think I can make the time trial next week TvT (we have to run 3 miles under 27 minutes, and I can't even run it in 30 minutes) 27 mins ?? dang ours was 25:30 for new people and you had to beat your previous year's time if you wanna return. I was to the point where I had to beat 24:00 on the tryout to return my senior year and then I moved honestly I hate track and only did it to stay in shape for XC. but my friends did the same thing so we suffered together. except for one. she was a pole-vaulter, not a distance runner but yes they're v good for making friends

For someone who is looking at going but isn't a freshman, what advice would you have? hey !! i was homeschooled up until my freshman year so my first year of high school was also my first year at a "real" school so i knew absolutely NO one and i was rlly afraid bc i have social anxiety too and it was pretty daunting but in all honesty it was not nearly as bad as i expected it to be. it took me maybe 2 days to adjust to the campus/environment but after that it was a total breeze my advice: i think you should definitely give your high school a try, there are so many amazing opportunities that are offered at a high school that can help you with college/classes/friends. although i started high school as a freshman i can understand what you might be going thru. as for not feeling "smart enough" trust me, you will do fine. unless you take honors/ap classes, i can assure you that most high school classes are 100% doable, and even if you find them a little difficult, with some effort im positive you'll get up to speed (i highly doubt you are not up to speed already tho, high school classes are usually very doable). i know you must have already heard this like 1000 times but joining a club/sport or any extracurricular you might be interested in is really great because its honestly such an easy way to make friends, especially if you aren't a freshman, because there's a lot of people who join sports/clubs/etc. in their sophomore/junior/senior year !! i joined most of my extracurriculars as a sophomore/junior and everyone was really cool and accepting even if you don't choose to join any extracurriculars you're almost guaranteed to make friends just by being in a class w other ppl i swear bc my first year i didnt join anything but i still made some friends w people who were in class with me just by offering them a piece of gum or giving them a pencil if they don't have one etc. anyways this was a lot lol but to end it, don't be scared of high school, it's really not all what people make it out to be and it's definitely not as scary as it seems. coming from someone who never went to an actual school, i can say that going to a real high school was such a good decision and i don't regret it one bit

i thought this was an advice thread for college freshmen and i was excited rip
anyway i'm going into college and i was a lil bit of a jack of all trades in high school. graduated w/ a 4.7 weighted GPA, took 10-ish APs and some online stuff, did a breast cancer research internship for half my schedule in senior year at a facility near me, dated/messed around w romance stuff (a lot), had a job, was on a varsity sports team, helped out w/ tech, made and lost a shit ton of friends, came way out of my shell, etc.
so i can help with whatever if any of you need it

man we didn't even have a camp. we had the voluntary option to meet for team runs but nothing was mandatory until tryouts. I loved XC tho. track was hell. but XC was great. I kinda wish I didn't quit my senior year but ???? idk being an openly queer high school athlete sucks and I gave in so

being an openly queer high school athlete sucks ik this wasn't at me but i feel. i dropped off the field hockey team for my senior year and i said it was bc of a scheduling conflict but it was actually mostly because i had started openly dating a girl since the last season and my teammates of 3 years would all whisper about me and stuff at the practices in the spring when we coached the kids and just. if that was bad i don't even want to know what they would have done as far as the locker room situaton n stuff like that

I've actually been looking for my first year just doing electives/extracurricular classes( I know someone who does the same thing) while working on my core classes to get to where I should be or ahead. There is this church class that the school allows because of the massive amount of kids that go to my church that I went to last year, so I like a interactive class room feel when there is a good teacher and when I'm passionate about the subject. I'll be a sophomore in a few weeks here so I'll just have to see how it goes. I'm not sure that my parents really like the idea though x.o

I'm a rising junior but I kind of fail at school I do everything wrong
so all I have to tell you is this:
(actually ignore this entire part if you're an organized person you probably won't gain anything from me if you are) you really don't need all the school supplies they tell you to buy, ok? all you need is a writing utensil, a binder or folder to keep papers, loose-leaf lined paper or a notebook, and if your school has you bring a laptop like my school does, then bring that unless your teacher specifically tells you to bring something else (like a calculator for math, that's important), you don't need any more than that. you don't need a separate binder or folder for every class (well, I guess if you're used to being organized that way...be my guest)
also do your homework...while you do get a nice adrenaline rush from finishing and printing your history paper 2 minutes before class starts, it's really not ideal
and tbh don't care too much about what other people say

AP classes in my experience have not been as difficult or as work-heavy as they were implied to be! AP chem was technically hard but if you can memorize a couple formulas and/or do dimensional analysis you'll be fine AP calc BC is not as scary as it seems like it will be from AP calc AB (AB is pretty easy; you do the same thing all year, just forward and backward)…there are some hard formulas…but to be honest, I still don't know most of them, and I got a 5 on the exam, so apparently they're not very important

when you have free time in class, it's a good idea to do your homework (even for other classes) in my experiences AP classes tend to have a surprising amount of downtime…
learn which teachers want you to look super invested in class, which teachers will be impressed if you answer their questions quietly to yourself, and which teachers expect you to raise your hand
when someone drops something nearby, pick it up for them, because it will earn you points with everyone (aka teachers)
sometimes you can convince your teachers to make extra credit assignments and/or push back deadlines
being a mix of funny and pathetic can sometimes be a bonus (example: when people called out M. for having brought in store-bought cookies for an assignment that involved baking cookies, he stubbornly insisted he had baked them, and he got extra credit)
some teachers will ramble on and on telling stories, and in some cases you can get them on a roll and waste all of class…but do this wisely so that you don't miss important information or get too much crammed into one day
you can generally go to the counselor if a teacher is being really awful (this may not always accomplish anything but it shouldn't hurt either)
go ahead and look up your math homework in the textbook…just make sure you know how to do it (solve backward or something) because there will be a difficulty spike in quarter four

I'll answer some questions! Here's some advice:
- You're going to be uncomfortable. Especially if you're quiet. Don't let this discourage you. Just keep going! - People are terrible. You will be surrounded by terrible influences and peer pressure. Do not give in whatsoever. It'll be better for you and them. You're right at that age where everyone thinks it's okay to pick on each other. I just advise you to try to ignore them. I know it's not easy, but they are just people. They are no better than you and you are no better than them. - Your teachers will also most likely be terrible. High school teachers are a lot different from middle school teachers. They don't baby you at all, and are most of the time very strict. Just try not to act up too much. - Make a few friends. I don't advise trying to get into a huge group where bad influences are present. Just make two or three really great friends. That's what I did anyway, and I am still friends with them till this day. Also, don't try to mix with the upperclassmen yet. They are more likely to pick on you than be your friend simply because you are younger. Try to stay in your own age group. - Focus on your studies. While it is important to have friends, the social life should always come after your education. Freshman year kicks off your high school grades and whatnot, and it is best to start off strong so you won't have to struggle later.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask me here or even PM if you want!!!

always remember that at the end of high school you will never see a lot of these people again (unless you go to like a reunion or something, but that's beside the point)
which means positive: if you hate someone…it doesn't make now any better, but you will escape someday negative: if you don't talk to someone you want to talk to, if you don't at least get their phone number or something, then you might never get another chance, so do it

also the social stuff is really overhyped ?? like man. no one's doing all that partying stuff or w/e. idk if this is bc I went to such a big school, but popularity also wasn't really a thing ?? you'll be ok 100% back this statement from my own experience!
