hi i made this thread for freshmen who have questions, comments & concerns abt high school (yea i know most of you don't want to think abt going back to school but its happening so)
NOTE: these are not just questions for me guys !!!! this is a free-for-all so anyone who has gone thru freshman year is welcome to answer questions and give advice too
if you're a freshman : feel free to ask away about anything you're worried about or wondering about high school etc. and i along with anybody else who wants to participate will answer your question to the best of my ability
if you've finished your freshman year already : you're more than welcome and free to answer questions and give advice to others here !!!
anybody is welcome this is a chill place to ask about stuff so there is no such thing as a stupid question
anyways i guess we'll see if this works out or not

my school is 8-12 and im going into grade 10?

i'm socially awkward and incredibly introverted
there's also the fact that i have to go to the same school (and probably many of the same classes) as the guy i'm trying to forget about |

there's also the fact that i have to go to the same school (and probably many of the same classes) as the guy i'm trying to forget aboutok that's a great start that you're not worried about the academics !! so I went from a school of 400 to a school of 3,300. also my high school wasn't military kid only; I'd literally never met a kid who wasn't a military kid before. if I can do that and end up ok you can do this. also if it helps you at all, everyone is nervous. everyone is worried about the social aspects of starting high school |

i think i'll be okay academically (i've got algebra and geometry, two thing i can deal with) but not sure about socially

I'm gonna be a junior so here's some advice that I wish people had given me
-don't expect to be friends with the same people that you were in middle school, you all will be going different ways based on your interests
-spread yourself out, don't have just a few friends that are all connected, likelihood is some shits gonna happen and you'll get ditched so have multiple friend groups so that way you won't ever be left alone
-befriend your teachers, even if they are a *******, trust me you'll want to be on their good side it'll make things a lot easier, and this way you can find at least a couple adults you can trust if needed
-for you non ace/around people don't worry about relationships, if they happen they'll happen, don't chase anyone or work towards it, you have more important things to do
-don't try to fit in bc you'll just look like an idiot and end up hurting yourself, just be you, likelihood is people will accept it bc they're more accepting in high school than middle school like as long as you're nice no one gives a shit
-don't take "pre-ap" or "advanced" classes unless they are required to get into an ap class, they will whip your ass and you'll be struggling for just one credit you could have gotten just doing a regular class, colleges don't care about pre-ap classes, they want a good GPA and ap classes
-make sure you are organized, buy as much supplies you need and learn good study habits, you'll need them
-focus on your core classes, while electives may he more exciting they're not what will get you into a good college
-join a club or two, it'll look good for college and it'll help you make new friends
-befriend a few upperclassman or sophomores to help you and tell you a bit about each teacher and whatnot, having insider information really helps
-don't do things you wouldn't have done on your own will to impress someone, its not worth it
-if you find yourself in a bad situation socially and can't find a way out call your parents, they'll be upset but also relieved that you are safe plus it shows maturity
-don't be afraid to ask anything, if you don't know how to do a problem ask, likelihood is you aren't the only one and others are too afraid to ask as well
-if you're struggling with a mental issue, don't go to the same friend every time, find more than one person you can trust with it and preferably an adult who knows how to handle it

ok I just remembered something v important. if you're having issues, go talk to the school psychologist. they're an actual listened psychologist w a degree n stuff and they're free to see for you since they're a school employee. confidentiality stuff applies so they can't tell anyone else anything unless they either think you're gonna hurt yourself, think you're gonna hurt someone else, or you give them permission. I went through some Really Bad stuff my junior year and my school's really helped me out !! he also helped me come out to my parents and was one of my biggest allies !! pls pls pls use the school psychologist

Honestly I was going through a lot freshman year so all my teachers thought I was lazy and a terrible student but that wasn't true
But it made for some exciting times
Making friends is a huge thing. That's the fun part of high school. Spending time with your friends
But tbh it's hard for me to offer advice Bc it went by so fast
And my experience was different from most
One of my teachers was literally losing her mind (I'm not being mean or anything like I think she was getting Alzheimer's BC she was older)
One of my teachers had favorites and hated me
I kept the same friends from middle school but I made a few new ones
I changed houses in the middle of the school year and I got kinda happier but ehh
So idk but I'll try to help y'all
Also my school is different
I mean there's kinda popular kids but not really?? Like you may not like everyone but you're kinda a family??? So it really depends on the school how things are gonna go

I'm going into sophomore year in high school. Advice to freshmen: Join clubs, sports, etc, but only ones that you're really into. If your school's anything like mine, there'll be a "club fair" that enables all the clubs in the school to advertise. The upperclassmen will probably block your way and scream "JOIN (insert club name here) YOU WON'T REGRET IT 1!!11!" Don't give in to pressure, and it's okay to say no to clubs you're not interested in. I joined like 10 clubs last year because a) they all seemed so appealing or  I couldn't say no bc it was run by someone I know, but I ultimately quit all of them. So just join ones that you're sure you'll be involved in for 3-4 years. Also, even though freshmen grades won't have an effect in college admissions, it's still important to take rigorous courses and get good grades. DON'T PROCRASTINATE (even though I started my homework at 10 or 11 and still here to tell the story), as most homework assignments will take a long time and attempting to do it during lunch will result in great distress for you. This goes for essays and labs too. Also, don't be late, and try to maintain a good grade throughout the semester so you won't be pressured as much right before/during finals week, as I was (I hate you biology; and I hate you more, algebra 2/trig TvT) But try to make time for your social life & sleep as well, even though getting a healthy amount of sleep in high school is pretty much impossible ;.; ECs will definitely help your social life & help you to be more outgoing. (Track is an awesome sport; it's ok if you're not a sports person, all you do is run. c: Plus, you get to meet a lot of awesome people.) Ask upperclassmen for advice, as they'll know which teachers/courses are good/bad. I've also heard freshman year is the easiest year ;.; #screwedGood luck! |

Because I would be seriously concerned if your school doesn't follow a block schedule. They're not easy subjects, and I had a lot of trouble w/ them (or it might be just because of my horrible work habits), and doing them at the same time might not be the best option. |

I can answer questions too, but I didn't go to a traditional school so my perspective might be weird.
general advice:
-If you're shy like me, take risks! Talk to people & don't assume everyone hates you. Maybe some people will hate you, but I know I wasted a lot of time being afraid of the people who are now my friends.
-but if you decide not to take a risk, don't beat yourself up about it, and don't let anyone else make you feel bad about it either
-Self-advocacy is an important skill, but I suspect that not all schools encourage it.
-try to have friends your own age
