The old grey tabby sat peacefully at the edge of the lake, the wind ruffling his fur and the waves lapping at his paws. The sun was going down and Jayfeather knew that it was almost time. Rock had come to him in a dream and told him. A tear slid slowly down his face as he remembered his times speaking to Rock when he was younger, and how he had broke the stick. An anguished howl welled up in his chest and he closed his sightless blue eyes tightly. Jayfeather's heart ached with the knowledge that he had broken all his ties to Half Moon when he broke the stick. A sob wrenched his frail body and Jayfeather threw back his head and howled in pain, tears streaming down his face. Images of his times as Jay's Wing flashed in his mind and he wished he could go back. "Why?" he yowled to the darkening sky. "Why did this have to happen? Why was I Jay's Wing?" He dropped his head to his chest.
"Why?"
As he sat there, his only companion his misery, something bumped his paws. Jayfeather's ears perked up and he bent his head down, brushing his nose over the wet object. His heart leaped and he ran a paw it. "Half Moon," he whispered as he realized what it was. He felt the familiar scratches and he purred in delight. Maybe the stick would let him see Half Moon again! Quickly, he laid down with his cheek pressed to the wood, filled with excitement. He closed his eyes and held his breath, waiting for the tell-tale signs that told him he was where he wanted to be.
Jayfeather waited. Nothing. He opened his eyes, expecting to see his beloved companion. His heart sank in disappointment when he realized he was still blind and most definitely still in his time. A sigh escaped his muzzle and he rested his chin on the stick, gazing sightlessly across the lake.
He stayed like that for a long time. The moon had risen and there was nothing. It was dark and he was growing cold and irritated. Why would Rock lie to him? Jayfeather growled, turning his head to the side. A sudden heaviness filled his body and he closed his eyes once again.
A breath ruffled his ear fur. "Jay's Wing."
Jayfeather's breath caught. Only one time called him that. Slowly, he opened his eyes, realizing that he could see. Joy filled him as he leaped up, his youthfulness returned, and gazed at the cats surrounding him. Running Horse and Cloudy Sun were standing beside each other, young once again. Stone Song and Broken Shadow were there too. They looked at him with sad eyes and he saw that their son, Fallen Leaves, was not with them. As he continued around the circle, he saw many familiar cats. Fish Leap, Rising Moon, Furled Bracken, Chasing Clouds, and Jagged Lightning were all there too. He smiled, but felt a stab in his heart each time he saw a cat that was not the one he was looking for. A soft mew sounded behind him, and he turned around, a broad smile stretching across his face. "Half Moon!" he exclaimed as he rushed forward, pressing against her.
Half Moon purred. "I told you I would wait for you," she murmured.
"I thought you were gone," he confessed. He stepped back and looked at her, his eyes brimming with tears.
"I love you, Half Moon."
