[Chapter one]
"Spiderheart, where did you go?" Batflight looked around the meadow in search of the older tom. The tall grasses blocked her view of any sneaky tom. Stumped, she parted her jaws to scent the air. Just as she detected his strong scent, a heavy object crashed down on her.
"Never let down your guard down around me," Spiderheart laughed, pinning her down.
"I let you jump me." She said in a huff. She shimmied her way out of his grip. "If this was a real battle, you wouldn't have pinned me so easily." When she got up she shook the dirt from her pelt, making bits of dust and earth fly at her opponent.
"You wish." He teased Batflight. "Anyways, I didn't ask you to come here just to play cat and fox," Spiderheart sat up right and licked his chest nervously. "Batflight, I know I'm a bit stubborn at times," The tom started. "And I know I'm not the easiest to deal with or as handsome as most toms in the clan but I've truly have grown feelings for you." Batflight stared at the tom, waiting for him to say more. She never had a tom confess to her and it gave her a warm feeling in her chest. "What I'm trying to say is, Batflight, I'd be happy if you became my mate."
"I didn't know you felt that way about me." She mewed, a tad embarrassed. "I'm not really the romantic type, but I think it's about time I try. But wouldn't that mean you'd have to tell Meadowstar you don't want to be deputy?"
"I know I have to, but it's worth giving it up to me if that means I could be with you," Spiderheart told her. Not a single note of regret rang in his voice, just pure determination. Awhile ago, Breezestar, the last leader had created a new rule stating that the deputy or leader could not have a mate or kits. The rule was made when Meadowstar, Meadowmuzzle at the time, fought for several sunrises, neglecting the clan and ended up cutting ties as mates.
"Then I will," Batflight purred loudly. She had slight feelings for the tom before, but after hearing him say all those sweet things, her feelings blossomed. The tom pressed his body against her in an embrace, licking the top of her head.
"You've made me an extremely happy tom." His look of joy turned to a look of worry. "I better tell Meadowstar that I want to be a warrior again," Spiderheart mewed softly in her ear before turning away from her and making his way towards camp. But when he left, Batflight felt the warmth of his love leave her body and she felt cold once again.
"I hope you don't regret your choice later on." She said under her breath.
