Prologue
Doveheart paces by the nursery door, a troubled look passing over his face. Sunshine, the medicine cat, was already inside, checking up on Silverwing, his mate, as she started her kitting. Deerpaw was getting herbs from the storage space. Featherflight rests her tail tip on his shoulder. "Don't worry so much, Doveheart!" she says, purring. "She'll be fine, just you wait and see! She's a healthy cat!" "Sometimes that's not enough." he replies. "Think of Goldclan's Silverpelt!" Silverpelt, a Goldclan queen, died in kitting eve though she was a healthy cat. "Silverwing's not Silverpelt. She'll be fine." Featherflight, once a queen herself, was a veteran of kitting. She winks at Doveheart. Shimmersong, his sister, rubs her head against his muzzle. "You know she's not going anywhere until he gets to watch her kits grow up, right?" "I hope, Shimmersong." he replies.
Just then, Sunshine comes out, beaming. "Two she-cats and a tom!" she tells Doveheart. Doveheart slides into the nursery. Silverwing beams up at him, three kits wiggling at her side. Doveheart grins back. "What will you name them?" "The tortoiseshell is Shimmerkit, the silver tabby is Skykit, and the white-and-orange one is Flowerkit." she replies. Doveheart agrees to this. "They're perfect." he murmurs. "Yes." Silverwing agrees.
