Things aren't always in the hands of the stars. Sometimes, one needs to know when it is time to pass it on, the torch of power and knowing.
As it is, not everything is as it seems. Sometimes power in the wrong paws serves its own purpose, a hand guiding the torch, holding it until another leader comes to bring it higher. Into the clouds, into the night, to the moon.
One can go their entire life without seeing such a torch, or knowing whose hand it is placed in. Some don't even realize they're holding it. But of course, one is, and there will always be a leader, someone to rise and save the day. One can only hope it is a good choice.

He had silver eyes.
You noticed -- how could you not? -- but you didn't think it meant anything. Even when the seer had told you to never trust any cat with silver eyes. Raina had silver eyes, and she was your best friend. Besides, seers never really see anything, they're just making it up for show, keeping themselves in business. It was called. . . something. . . shooting the rainbow maybe, where somecat could 'read your mind' by saying something so vague that it was always somewhat right, right enough that the cat would believe in the seer's powers.
Really, the chances you would be betrayed by a cat with silver eyes was pretty much perfect. Especially when Raina was around spreading drama.
You thought the seer had seen (ha) her when you had entered the shadowy holly bush, and said the first thing that came to mind. Maybe they even wanted to get a laugh out of breaking you up if you had gotten too serious over their prediction.
Never did you think of the seer of your kithood when you met him: the cat with silver eyes.
What would have happened if you had listened?
Would you have lived?
Probably.
Would your life have been better?
. . . That, I do not know.

Welcome
Yes, this is a fan-fiction. Yes, each chapter is a poem.
But welcome to Luna&Solis! In the original drafting of this story, they were two separate stories, but they don't make much sense apart (honestly, they don't make much sense together either) but I decided on the new forums to try it a new way and I'm really liking how it's working out so far.
Now, so I know this is going to need an explanation as I go along. One cannot just write a bunch of poems and expect the reader to know exactly what is going on. The reader is supposed to read them and interpret the meanings behind the poems. Sort of like a game, but stories. However, here's the things you should know before reading:
Firstly, everything follows a chronological order. There will be flashbacks too; these can be noted when past tenses are used. Present is in present tense.
Next, hints will be dropped along the journey. If you have questions, they will most likely be answered in the coming parts. Some might need to be inferred, or puzzled out, but I will leave all the clues there to be read.
Entries in Silver/black are from the story LUNA. Entries in gold/yellow are from the story SOLIS. Entries in green are interludes. All perspectives are in chronological order.

0. Then
Stone sat, his yellow eyes wary. His grey fur melted into the rocks, his single white paw a beacon in the darkness. He didn't know what to think. Emotions flooded through him, threatening to drown him in their power; was he confused, hurt, betrayed? Beside him stood many of cats, but despite this, he was very, very much alone when he finally mewed in a cracked voice, a voice raw with the emotion that raged just beneath: "What do you want with us?"
Luna frowned, shifting her paws in the sand. The waves hissed in her ears, just like the shadows. The sand peppered her paws as the breeze tossed them into little whirlwinds. She shivered, although the cold seeping into her fur was familiar. Moonlight reflected off the still water, turning it into a shimmering mirror. But when she looked at her reflection, another cat stared back.
Hawk's tail twitched. He was almost invisible in the night, except for his eyes, his eyes that shone gold and silver in the starlight as he watched the scene unfurl. He knew what was happening, followed the plot to the inevitable conclusion. So why did he feel that he was only a pawn to be moved by another's whims?
Solis took a step forward. His golden pelt seemed out of place in the night, his eyes embers of a fire that could not be put out. He was a light in the darkness, a sun in a world where the moon ruled the sky. He took another step. Yet the moon was absent now. There was only his light. He smiled.
I sat in the darkness, unseen, unwanted, alone. The stars were my guardian, casting shadows over my fur, invisible to those below. I watched. I watched.
I am watching.

I. I can Hear You
You think you are alone
those times when you cry.
You try to be strong,
I know.
Strong, you say
only strength can win,
you try,
you cry,
alone,
but I can hear you.
You never know
that I am there
a shadow,
darker than the night,
darker than the dreams,
darker than your mind,
those days you cry.
You never see,
you never saw.
I can hear you.
You are the core,
the steady one
we can all trust.
You protect us
you stand up for us
nothing can stop you.
Yet I can hear you,
whispering doubts,
things gone wrong
things that can never be
anymore.
I can hear you.
You have to be strong
you know
that without you
we are nothing.
You cannot be weak,
you cannot show
the barest hint of doubt
of wrong
of what should have been
of what should be
that fine line.
You cannot say,
lips sealed,
yet,
I can hear you.
You think
you are alone.
That no one
ever
can know what you do.
But I can see.
I can hear you.
And no matter what,
I will be there
for you
always
in the shadows.
I know you.
I see you.
I can hear you.
those times when you cry.

II. Promise, I do.
Don't say things
you don't mean.
Ever, she says,
ever.
Don't make promises
you can't keep.
Never, she says,
Never.
But this is

New.
Unexplained.
She doesn't know
me
and you.
You can say things
lies
for good.
It cannot hurt
to bring hope.
It can never harm
to create light.
Lies
they may be.
Untruths
she might say.
Yet bright,
sunny
good lies.
You know
the darkness
that dwells inside.
You feel
the secrets
the death
the sighs.
Poison it is,
this pressing dark.
Black as night,
inky claws
ripping and tearing
shredding and destroying.
Lies can bring light.
They can ease the pain.
You know
they will die
that you
will die
too.
Weave stories of light
of hope and joy
happiness and laughter.
Make lies
Make promises
that can never come true.
Tell them of rescue.
Of life over death.
Promise escape,
tell that it'll be okay.
Promise the light
at the end
of the day.
Lie

III. I can Hear You
You tell them you don't hear them at night, but you do. You tell them their wails don't keep you up every night. You tell them their cries for help don't even reach your ears. But they do, they do, and not only do you hear them, but you care. You care about them, you care that your actions are only bringing them pain. . .
"Luna?" You jump. No one ever follows you out here, not this late at night. You look around, but there is nothing. . . not until he pushes his muzzle through the ferns, stepping out into the moonlight. You stiffen at the sight of him, retreat far into yourself to a place he can't find you.
A place he can't break you.
He will break you.
His golden fur shimmers in the moonlight. His eyes suns in the night. You turn your head, even in the night, he threatens to pull you in. Into his bright darkness. "Solis."
He is your sun, you are his moon.
So why does he set paw in your domain? He does not belong in your night, the night when you rule as Queen. As you do not belong in his Kingdom of the sun. . . no light shines in your world.
Is there darkness in his?
"What are you doing up here?" he asks, his voice as deep as the chasm that rips a hole into the earth beneath your paws. The bottom is shrouded in shadows, but still you peer down into its depths.
You hesitate in your words, measuring them carefully. You may be Queen here, but the Sun holds many more followers than your Moon. "I can walk here if I please. What are you doing here at all?"
You can feel him blink, even if you don't look at him. Moments pass, and you can feel his breath warm on your cold fur. Then he is gone, like a whisper. The night is silent with his departure.
Until they begin to howl.
Screams and sobs, pleading, crying. Tears run down your cheeks, reflecting the moonlight and falling as diamonds to those down below. You can't even speak. All you can do is whisper: "I can hear you."

IV. Flight
Paws were all
I could see.
A flash here
a heartbeat gone
flying by
faster
faster
faster.
My heart burned
paws flashing
running
pushing as I went.
Ill-mannered branches
gripping me
holding me back.
I screamed
I ran
Thoughts of claws,
silver,
sharp,
cutting claws
pushing into my brown fur
scarlet,
as red as the moon,
running off the ends.
Fur at my side,
tan in black
entangled tighter
than I could have thought.
Boom, boom, boom
went the paws
boom, boom, boom.
Behind me,
beside me,
you at my side.
Running
running
faster
faster
fas--
I could see.

V. Promise, I do
"I'll only be a few days, Raina, no need to get so. . . Raina about it," you said with an exasperated sigh. Sometimes you wished Raina wasn't so clingy.
You saw Raina open her mouth to argue, usually soft silver eyes chips of steel, her ginger-and-white fur fluffed so that she appeared twice as wide as she usually does. "Honestly, they think I've defected. That I've become a spy for them. They wouldn't even think of believing that I was really doing the opposite."
"But you're leading them into a trap this time! Don't you think they're going to be suspicious if you just appear after being gone a moon and start telling them where to go?" Raina's voice was soft, but you knew that is when she is at her most furious.
You sighed again, not able to muster any anger to argue back. She's just scared for you, you thought. You flattened your ears, but that doesn't mean she has to be so star forsaken difficult right now.
You took a step back, forcing a smile on your face, though it quickly flickers out like a candle blown in the wind. "I'll be back here before the moon is full."
"You promise?" You could barely hear her now, and she suddenly seemed very, very small.
"I promise." You whispered back. A gust of wind came from behind, flattening your fur. You shivered. I promise.

VI. Faint
Your whispers
faintly
softly
spoke to me.
How could we hide,
you asked,
how could we leave
everything behind,
only moving forward
loosing who
we are?
You asked her
and she answered.
You didn't like
what she had to say.
I know it.
I know it.
She told you
that it didn't matter
who we were.
It only mattered
who we would become.
You spoke
whispers
smoke in the night
yet,
I could hear you.
You thought
she would help.
You thought
she was with you
always.
Faintly,
you talked.
You turned away.
Faintly,
ever so faintly,
she smiled.

VII. Alone
You left him alone with the seeds of your plans. You told him the hills were his only hope, the only place where he could finally be free.
You told them that They didn't know about the hills.
But he didn't know about Them.
You told them that They didn't know about the hills.
But he didn't know about Them.
VIII. Light
I sit
Here in the dark
echoes drowning out
cries
of joy
of sorrow.
I feel broken
and empty
and hollow
for you,
you are not at my side.
You are there,
in the light,
the bright
shining
sparkling light
shouting of hope
and joy
and tomorrow.
I stand to the side,
the rocks curling
around like a shell
protecting me
shielding me
from you
even when the only thing
I want
is you.
No light,
no light ventures here
in the shadows
and dark
as they call
to the sun.
Protected
shielded from hope
false hope.
You wish
to be here
with me
in the dark.
You want
to be here
in the truth.
Yet you go
outside
calling to them
of light
and of the sun
and hope
even when
only the moon
hears your cries.
Here in the dark
echoes drowning out
cries
of joy
of sorrow.
I feel broken

IX. Shadow
You sat on the edge of the cliff for the rest of the night, but all you can give are your tears. Their cries echo below, their longing singing sorrow in your heart.
Even the night is little relief. The shadows take in their screams, but instead of muffling them, they only amplify the sound. Your ears are numb, dead in the cold. You stand and shake your head, trying to shake away the sounds. They cling to you with the shadows.
The moonlight sparkles along the side of the cliff, the dewdrops crystals in the shining stone. You wish its rays could penetrate the darkness below. . .
But nothing can penetrate the darkness of hopelessness.
You stand there, no tears left to give, until the sky grows brighter with the oncoming of the sun. Slowly, the shadows fade away.
Yet their cries still echo in your heart.

X. Alone
You were there,
in your den
for the longest time
alone
you were always alone.
They watched
the bramble screen
waiting,
always waiting,
for that one cat
the one they trust
to tell them
it will be okay.
But you didn't.
You hid.
Even when
the news She brought
must have been good.
It had brought hope
a spark in your heart
kindling some flame
you never knew existed
in that dark place.
She told you of escape,
She told you of a place,
I knew,
a place we could finally be free.
Yet you didn't say,
not aloud
that night
when all the eyes
were on you.
And slowly,
as the sun dipped,
they wandered off
one by one.
The news you held inside
was kept
only for your ears.
You needed a plan,
I knew,
something absolute to say.
You puzzled,
you thought,
but they all left.
Leaving you
alone.
Only you,
me,
and the rising moon.
in your den
for the longest time
alone
you were always alone.
They watched

XI. Eleven
You sat in that den
until the sun rose
to its peak.
You sat and sat
and they cried and cried.
You were their leader
they screamed
they cried.
Where did you go?
I knew
I know
they wished to be
a part
of what you were.
Finally
finally
She came to see you.
I saw Her go in
saw Her come out
you at her side.
You cried,
tears of joy.
Yesterday
they dreamed of escape
Today
they dreamed of life.
Over the hills!
There we'll be free!
That's what you told them
but didn't tell me
you knew I didn't
trust Her.
You knew you shouldn't
trust Her.
You didn't like me
not then
not there.
You didn't want
to say I was right.
You were the leader
and I was not.
You were the great one
and I was not.
But She was a liar
and I was not.
I tried to go
out.
I tried to tell
you the truth.
I tried and tried
eleven times.
And eleven times
I failed.
until the sun rose
to its peak.
You sat and sat

You were their leader

She came to see you.
I saw Her go in
saw Her come out
you at her side.
You cried,
tears of joy.
Yesterday
they dreamed of escape
Today
they dreamed of life.
Over the hills!
There we'll be free!
That's what you told them
but didn't tell me
you knew I didn't
trust Her.
You knew you shouldn't
trust Her.
You didn't like me
not then
not there.
You didn't want
to say I was right.
You were the leader
and I was not.
You were the great one
and I was not.
But She was a liar
and I was not.
I tried to go
out.
I tried to tell
you the truth.
I tried and tried
eleven times.
And eleven times
I failed.
XII. Light
The sun rises faster than you can ever remember, as if eager to assert its dominance over night's domain. Its rays burn the shadows until they're forced to cower into only the darkest of places, not daring to show their faces in day's domain.
You leave the cliffs then, for without the shadows to keep you company, the echoes of your heart are too lonely to bear.
By the time you return, the light is shining too brightly for even those who wish to hold onto the bliss of sleep, and many cats are out and about, telling tales of the day before.
You scowl. You don't belong in the light. You blindly find your way to the shadows, away from the light, the burning, blinding, painful light.
At least in the darkness you aren't alone.

XIII. Hunger
I can see it in your eyes.
No tears
no pain
no lies
Gone.
The sun rose
its rays
forever
reaching up.
The sky
a sliver of light
far, far
up above.
Light is
above
We are
below.
Only darkness
and shadow lurks.
One ray of light
flickers
a small flame
dancing,
singing
hope.
You step out
into the light
into the hope
the light
you had called.
It dances in your eyes
golden as the sun.
I thought
it would bring light
I though
it would bring hope.
But you look up
a challenge
a threat.
And in your eyes
I saw nothing
nothing but
Hunger.
No tears
no pain
no lies
Gone.

forever
