As someone on DeviantArt put it so well, Leporello IS the short end of the stick. I mean, throughout he opera, he's abused, manipulated, straight up almost KILLED a few times, and then gets to witness two different deaths. Fun for him, is it not? It's endless fun XD Leporello is a resilient character. With your version of him, I think it would be funny to see how he acts with the Don around
It definitely will be- my Leporello's much more deadpan than his operatic equivalent and acts as the straight man to the Don. When they manage to interact again (which will be coming soon) it will be quite fun to watch

there's also bits where the whole Leporello being in love with the Don thing's really evident as well, so it's interesting watching him go from annoyance to sarcasm to fear to love in the span of about twenty seconds. They work really well off of each other, as you've got the really hammy Don to the subdued and melancholic Leporello

Song that referenced: (my mom and stepdad are learning to play and sing this song, and roped me into it, lol)

yeah he's a hopeless case in Ensemble lmao yeah it's like the Don's explaining his grand plans in energetic detail while Leporello's off to the side, obviously just done with everything, nodding along and of course there's the moments where Leporello calls the Don out on his behavior only for the Don to threaten Leporello back into submission and suddenly the atmosphere becomes tense. the Don is a dangerously volatile being, which makes Leporello's quietness a good foil for him

yeah they're weird, like one minute it's pretty obvious they've known each other for a very long time and the next it's very tense and uncomfortable and rather disturbing because the Don could kill Leporello at any second. Especially since the Don here uses a bit more psychological manipulation on Leporello than he does in the opera so it gives it a very controlling, unsettling vibe on top of everything else

@redheartofriverclan - That makes a lot of sense, if you consider how the Don has to be manipulative to have gone from woman to woman. It's something more realistic than him being a "hero"

Yeah, I find it more realistic as well- besides, the Don manipulated Leporello in the opera anyway, although not as much as he does in Ensemble. But where the opera's Don would simply bribe Leporello, the Ensemble version does things like playing the victim, making Leporello blame himself for everything, bringing up Leporello's abusive father, and so on. The way servants are treated in Ensemble is shown to be quite dark in its own right...

Ensemble's version seems to be much more realistic to me, because real people who get manipulated and used let themselves be treated that way. A darker view lends a unique perspective, I think

The whole servant thing in Ensemble in general is pretty messed up: most cats end up becoming servants because it's their only hope for any employment or their family does so as well, and they're usually "trained" (really just manipulated and abused) into becoming submissive and obedient by their mentors when they learn how to be a servant (in many cats' cases, the mentor is their own mother or father). Also, servants usually end up not being paid very well, starved, or overworked. And servants and masters falling in love with one another in any manner is considered a huge taboo that needs to be scorned and shunned (to the point where children born out of this kind of relationship are often left to die or flat-out killed). It's a very corrupt system, but nobody really questions it because that's how things have been for as far as anybody can remember

Right, falling in love was not an option. And no one cred if you had a ton of kids by servants, but one kid by your spouse and BAM, golden child.

That was basically what it was. Children of both master and servant pretty much have to raise themselves alone on the streets (if they aren't dead already), always wondering where they really belong. It's why Figaro became such a revolutionary figure in Ensemble- he was one of those children, and he was sick of the gap in classes that resulted in his mistreatment. It's generally a huge scandal to have any servants or masters in love with each other at all, no matter what situation or the cats involved

Probably related to someone rich who just couldn't deal with them. No way, love was not a priority at all

There are probably many many children running around in the streets that were a result of the Don's shenanigans, to be honest There's a bit that's shown where right after the Don's death Leporello tried to ask his (horrible) father for advice on his predicament. Leporello's father proceeded to disown him and force him to live out in the streets instead of letting his son work with him. There's a lot of horrible parents in Ensemble, it's kind of alarming

Leporello's parentage and the Don probably being a father to many are both added in Ensemble and weren't in the opera. I just stretched things to their logical conclusions Leporello can't catch a break no mater where he is and who he's with lmao

The entirety of Leporello's backstory could be accurately described as a series of unfortunate events, to be perfectly honest. Nothing good can happen to him
