"I smell a squirrel, I think... or is that the squirrel scent you were talking about earlier?" Pebblepaw asked, turning his head to Willowsong.
Mistpaw tripped and lay still for a moment, taking several deep breaths. "How was that?" she asked, standing.

Willowsong scented the air, giving Pebblepaw a nod of approval. “There is a faint squirrel scent, it’s a bit far away but we could probably find it. I’ll follow if you’d like to try catching it.”
Flamesky sighed, pawing at the ground in front of him. “Fineeee, I’ll stay in my boring cold nest in the warriors den alone.” He mewed dramatically. He couldn’t stop the smile that appeared on his face after he said it though, “I really am excited to be a father. I-I hope I’m good at it.”

Pebblepaw nodded and began to pad off, slowly at first before becoming more confident with every pawstep. "It's this way," he mewed quietly, heading deeper into the undergrowth. The scent of dock leaves and other plants flooded his nostrils, but the squirrel scent was still fresh on his tongue. He came to a small cluster of willow trees, squirrel dung scattered across the ground. He saw the squirrel just a few tail lengths away and crept low, preparing his pounce. Then, he remember what Willowsong had said-- "Squirrels will bound away and you will have to do your best to chase them. Some prey run so fast you just have to let them go. Hunting is a game of luck and practice." I'm going to catch it! he declared to himself. He sprung forward, hardly making a sound, claws extended. The squirrel had nowhere to go as its flesh was torn by claw and tooth, quickly going lifeless in Pebblepaw's jaws.

Sootpaw blinked and flicked his ear as he thought over his answer to Frostmoon’s question, “Oh, um, I would have to leap as high as I can and drag it back down.” He mewed, looking up at the warrior.
Sunthroat gave a nod, “Lead the way, Drizzlepaw. Let’s see how your tracking and stalking has progressed since you’ve started your training.” He said, motioning for her to start after the pigeon.
“Not bad. Your form needs a bit of work, but that can easily be fixed.” Ghostscreech said, shaking some loose sand out of his fur. He sat down and curled his tail over his paws before he continued speaking, “It was smart to try and attack me from behind, but that normally works best when your enemy isn’t expecting it. If you catch them by surprise, it will give you a lot more time to land a few blows before they think to roll to the ground like I did.” He instructed.
Brokenwing pressed her nose against Flamesky’s cheek comfortingly, “You’ll be an amazing father, Flamesky. I know you will be.” She purred, pressing against him.

Willowsong stood up from where she was crouching, looking at Pebblepaw with genuine surprise. “That was great Pebblepaw! You must be a natural born hunter, all you needed was some help with the basics.”

Flamesky relaxed against Brokenwing, just happy to be with her for a while. “I’ll do my best. We both will.” He whispered sincerely, purring and quietly as he began to groom her ears.

Pebblepaw beamed at his mentor-- two pieces of prey in one day! Mistpaw would be so proud of him for catching his blackbird and his squirrel, and at least two cats would be very happy to eat them both as well. "Should I take my prey to the elders and queens first, or should I add it to the freshkill pile?" he asked.
Mistpaw nodded slowly, taking in Ghostscreech's every word. "I'll keep that in mind. What could I have done to avoid tripping at the end?"

Uhm… okay.” Drizzlepaw swallowed down her nervousness, but quickly moved to lower her muzzle and begin tracking after the pigeon. She was grateful that Flurrypaw was there, always finding it a bit easier to do sessions like these with her brother around to support her. She spotted the pigeon after a long moment of tracking, preparing herself in a hunter’s crouch to ready the leap. That was, until a spider darted across her paws, and the skittish apprentice squeaked with a flash of shock. Startled, the pigeon flew away, and Drizzlepaw was left with bristled fur and a miserable look of embarrassment.

Willowsong laughed, endeared by his enthusiasm. “We’ll take it back to camp in a bit, we have to wait for the others. You may take one of your catches to the elders or queens though. Perhaps you and Mistpaw would like the share the other piece as a celebration? Our patrol will bring back plenty of prey today to go around, so you should get to celebrate your first catch by sharing it with your sister.”

Pebblepaw nodded. "Thank you, Willowsong!" he said, touching his nose to her pelt. "You're a great mentor-- I'm happy to have you teaching me." And I hope Mistpaw can say the same about Ghostscreech! he thought.

“Leaping higher is good.” Frostmoon nodded once, before she instructed. “But paw placement is also very important. You have to have quick enough reflexes to readjust your paws in the air to get as much space to grab the prey.” She looked at Sootpaw and mewed. “What has your mentor taught you so far, in terms of hunting?”

Willowsong purred quietly, happy that Pebblepaw got along so well with her just as Deerleap had. Willowsong had always appreciated how well Lightningstar matched up apprentices with mentors, looking for similar characteristics and personalities. It had been a lucky accident that she had also helped bring the new apprentice to the clan. "We will have many moons to learn together Pebblepaw. I'm sure you will end up teaching me just as much. I'm happy I get to train with you too."

“There are a few different ways that you can avoid it. You can try and jump over my paw or cut to the side before I get the chance to strike out at your paws.” Ghostscreech said. He stood up and circled around Mistpaw until he had the sun to his back, “You can use the sun to your advantage as well. If you keep your enemy facing the sun, the direct light can make it difficult for them to see and give you a chance to get a couple of blows in. How about I show you one of the beginning moves now?” He suggested.
Sunthroat followed after Drizzlepaw silently, watching her movements with a calculating gaze. When the apprentice had been startled by the spider and scared off the pigeon, he gave a flick of his ear. “That’s alright, Drizzlepaw. Your tracking skills are improving, I see Leopardfrost has been teaching you well.” He said, choosing not to embarrass the young apprentice any further. “Let’s try again. There’s a vole trail going that way, can you scent it? I want you to follow after it. Flurrypaw, tell me if you find any other prey scent and then it will be your turn to catch some prey.” He instructed.
“Magpiewing says that I should always stay downwind of my prey, keep my tail steady and off the ground and keep my weight on my paws even.” Sootpaw said.

“I… okay…” Drizzlepaw mewed softly, deeply embarassed and unable to look at the former deputy in her moment of disappointment in herself. Instead, she focused on the vole scent, quickly moving to track after it in hopes of redeeming herself.
“Got it!” Flurrypaw exclaimed. “I’ll let you know if I catch a scent!” He promised.
“Magpiewing’s right. Those are tips that you should have memorized, like second nature.” Frostmoon nodded her approval to Sootpaw. “Show me your current stalking technique, and we can then test it on a catch. So far, you’re making into a promising hunter.”

Sunthroat gave a nod, “Alright, for now let’s follow Drizzlepaw until you find something.” He said, moving after Drizzlepaw quietly and watched her movements.
Sootpaw gave a happy nod and quickly slipped into a hunting crouch, which felt like second nature to him now. He slowly stalked forward as if he were stalking after a bird at first before he changed it to stalking a squirrel next.

Mistpaw nodded, steadying her stance. "I'm ready," she mewed firmly.
Pebblepaw purred at Willowsong's reply, eager to prove her right. This is going to go so well! "What comes next?"

He knew that his sister was shy, but she was super skilled when she wasn’t being watched or around big groups. Frostmoon watched Sootpaw intently, making sure to take note of any positives and negatives of the form. She smiled faintly, knowing Magpiewing wouldn’t skimp out on the training. She nodded. “You’ve been practicing. The variety you have shows me that you’ve been taking it seriously. You should be proud. Now. Let’s try it on some prey.”

“The Forepaw Slash should be a good place to start.” Ghostscreech said, dropping into a ready stance and raising his forepaw up high, “The idea of the move is to slice downward at your opponent’s face or body, like this.” The deputy brought his forepaw down hard, slicing through the air. Ghostscreech demonstrated the move once more before he gave Mistpaw an encouraging nod, “Go ahead and give it a few practice rounds and then try it on me.” He said.
Sunthroat paused as they reached the vole and crouched down beside beside the skittish apprentice, “Alright, here we are, Drizzlepaw.” He whispered quietly to her, his eyes locked on the prey, “Tell me about how you would stalk after it. What method will you use?”
Sootpaw gave a light purr, happy that he had impressed the warrior, “Okay, Frostmoon!” He chirped, scenting the air for any prey nearby. Sootpaw turned his head sharply, catching the scent of a rabbit. A rabbit! A rare piece of prey to be found in ThunderClan, and so fare from WindClan territory. He gave Frostmoon an excited look and started stalking after it carefully. He had only hunted a rabbit once before, and it had been a scrawny thing too.

Mistpaw obeyed, raising her left forepaw and bringing bringing it down in a harsh, quick motion just as Ghostscreech had. That didn't feel quite right, she mewed to herself after the first attempt. After the fourth, it felt more correct and familiar. She then tried it on her mentor as instructed, claws sheathed, copying the same motion.

Ghostscreech watched as Mistpaw practiced the move and readied himself once she tried the move again. “That was good. If you put enough force into it, you could stun your opponent long enough to get another attack in. Now tell me, if you were facing a larger opponent, how do you think you could use your size to your advantage?” He prompted.

"Larger cats are often slower, so it's easier to dodge and be able to get behind them," Mistpaw answered. "I've seen a couple of cats do that in Twolegplace before. Raking their belly if they have you pinned is an option."

Willowsong glanced at the other apprentices and mentors, she was sure Frostmoon and Sunthroat could handle the others. "We're close to the border here, how about I take you over there so you can see it, I can tell you a bit about the other clans and while we're on our way over there we can work on your scenting and tracking some more."

Willowsong led the way towards the river, her fluffy tail waving idly as they walked. "Yes, our goal is to live as peacefully with the other clans as we can, but there is often conflicts. It is important to know and understand the other clans to know what you may be up against. We are headed towards our border with Riverclan. This is the most distinct border on our territory as it's the actual bank of the river. We have always been rivals with them. We often fight over a chunk of land called sunningrocks. Unfortunately, they have that piece of land right now." she spoke, sounding bitter about the loss.

Willowsong looked at Pebblepaw, her face suddenly sad and solemn. "More territory means more prey for your clan Pebblepaw. Our territory was ravaged by a fire not that long ago and prey was very scarce for moons afterward. Not only were we burned and scarred by the fire but we all went hungry. While I don't agree with the constant fighting and battles, sometimes it's necessary for making sure our clan survives. We lost a lot of cats in the blaze, one of them was my sister Ebonytail."

Cinnamonstep The she-cat lay on her side, resting in the nursery. Briarkit was playing next to her with Elderkit, the two were smiling and giggling. This amused her, and she let out a soft smile of her own. Tawnyfur was nearby, accompanied by Flamepelt. The two seemed to be having a serious discussion and she wondered what it was about.
