Plumfur shook her head and took a bite of the pigeon. "I just went on the hunting patrol, but we didn't see anything unusual... I heard that the patrol came back from SkyClan?" she asked, not familiar with the situation aside from the possibility of an alliance with the neighbor Clan. Aspenfall frowned and swished his tail across the floor of the den in thought. "Please don't say those things, Peachdapple. You sound like you heard an omen of your death." Peachdapple had trained his father before him and another medicine cat before that; he still couldn't imagine one of the strongest pillars of ThunderClan joining StarClan. "I don't think I could ever be ready..." "Oh! Yes, they did. I don't know the exact details yet, but Ghostscreech, Peachdapple and Russetfox came into camp looking very content. Ghostscreech went to report to Lightningstar, it seems that the patrol was successful then. I'm guessing Lightningstar will make an announcement soon." Dapplenight explained, taking a small bite after she took hers. "Oh, dear, I'd tell you if there was an omen after me." Peachdapple chuckled, turning then to look at her apprentice with a gentleness she tended to reserve for all the cats she had trained. She still remembered Heatherpaw standing where Aspenfall now stood, so full of potential. She had been so unsure then, freshly new to the position of Thunderclan's medicine cat when Mossfeather had passed. Her relationship with her own mentor had been so complex, with the worst of days and the best of days combined into an experience she would never forget. Mossfeather hated blood, yet her healing and ability to understand Starclan's path had made her into a powerful mentor. "Nobody's ever truly ready for this kind of position. I certainly wasn't. I remember waking up some mornings and wondering where Mossfeather had gone, if she was looking for herbs. I had to remind myself that she was gone, and I was left. That awful blizzard, all those moons ago, before you were born, was such a heavy burden for me. Losing Heatherpaw like that, for a moment I wanted to give up my name and become a Warrior again, because I felt I failed Thunderclan with each cat we lost." Peachdapple took a breath, before she continued. "But then I reminded myself that Thunderclan needed me, right where I was. Thunderclan needs you, right where you are, Aspenfall. This time, I know you're the one who will do what needs to be done, when I no longer can. Mousebrain." She laughed, teasing and sarcastic. "I'm not thinking of dying anytime soon. I'm thinking of when I will retire, and become an elder when I know it's my time to rest. I just want you to be ready, though I already know you are." "I wonder what it was about." Plumfur said as she waited for Dapplenight to take another bite. "Are the medicine cats doing okay? Or maybe it was SkyClan who needed help..." she pondered. Aspenfall was taken aback by Peachdapple's light tease after everything else she had said. "Ah, retirement. That... makes more sense," he mewed, feeling slightly embarrassed that he had even mentioned the possibility of his mentor dying after her reassurance. While his ears burned, he felt a little better. "I'm glad you're my mentor, Peachdapple." he admitted, showing a rare glimpse of sentimentality for the tom who typically took after Slatesight. "Will you at least be here to help when you retire?"

Peachdapple purred, lifting to her paws and padding towards Aspenfall. She lifted her large paw to rest it gently against his chest, where his heart was. "I will always be there to help no matter where I go. Elder's den, Starclan, anywhere. I like to hope that everyone in the Clan knows that by now. But, yes. I'll be one den away if I retire, that's all. I won't lose my wisdom, or my advice." She teased.

Darktail blinked as he took in her nest, looking back at his rather disheveled one in embarrassment. He supposed he probably moved more in his sleep than he thought he did. "Oh okay, yeah! However you like it." Moving over to his own, he scooted it over until there was enough room for hers to fit snuggly in beside him. "Is there okay? Or, do you want yours on the other side?"
Shadowblossom laughed, "I don't know if you've forgotten but you're quite a large tom. I think they'd notice you sneaking into the warrior's den. Especially since you don't have a nest in there anymore. I think I'd have much more luck sneaking into the elder's den. I'd feel bad though if someone came to get me for a morning patrol though and I wasn't in my nest."

Midnightstream assured with a small purr, carefully moving over the base of her nest, and gently weaving the material back into place. With a quick thought, she took a few of the feathers from her old nest and placed them gently into Darktail's side, hoping to keep him warm. She felt a bit giddy, knowing she wouldn't have to sleep in the den alone anymore. "That's true. I wouldn't dare keep you from your duties, I know how dedicated you are to waking up on time for patrols." Yarrowcloud chuckled. "Just another reason I love you, you never miss a day when you set your mind to something. Starclan, you're the reason I woke up on time most days."

Darktail smiled, letting out a soft purr as he noticed her place some of her own feathers in his nest. "Thank you." he murmured, trying to fix up his nest a bit to at least look a bit more presentable. "Guess I'll have to work on making mine a bit better. I've never really thought about it very much." he admitted, looking curiously at her nest.
Shadowblossom grinned, shaking her head in amusement, "You always were a heavy sleeper. I think a fox could sneak into your den and you would simply roll over." she replied, nudging his shoulder playfully.

You don't have to change anything for my personal tastes. Honestly, I take way too long to make my nest perfect." Midnightstream assured, looking at Darktail with a small smile. She rather enjoyed his ruffled nest. "You're all I really need to make my nest perfect anyway. Much warmer than some feathers." "I could sleep through a snowstorm and snore through a thunderstorm." Yarrowcloud admitted, able to appreciate the amount of sleep he could have in the elder's den, even if he still felt a bit lazy and wistful to go on a patrol again. He smirked. "You like my snoring though, you haven't stuffed moss in my nose yet."

“…We’ll need to get it back, sooner or later.” Frostmoon mewed suddenly, finally looking up at Ghostscreech, more upset than she wanted to admit, but hiding it behind a firmness. “Riverclan surely must think they’ve got the upper paw… they probably think Starclan has blessed them immaculately.” She muttered, trying to hide from Autumnfall’s sudden staring at her. The older she-cat looked at Frostmoon, suddenly seeming to burst with realization. A hint of sympathy filled her eyes, but it was soon covered by an awkwardness as she then looked at Ghostscreech. “Right.” Dawnpaw nodded quickly, determined this time to get the motions right. He bunched his muscles and leaped again, timing his spring better and this time managing to land on Sunthroat’s shoulders, albeit a bit wobbly. Mothsong lifted her head as Owlfrost approached. She turned her head slightly to face him, before she turned back to look at the willow trees again. “Willowpaw used to sit here before training and watch the willow branches sway. I always thought it was pretty pointless, but then he told me that he liked the way he could reach up and catch them. He liked the way they just… existed.” She suddenly reached one of her paws up to grasp at a leafless swaying branch. “He was such a good, happy apprentice. He worked hard, did everything right, always woke up on time, and yet he still was able to see the bright side of everything. A cat like him… stuck with a cat like me.” She rasped, quiet and stony, before she shook her head. “He took the anger out of me, and now that he’s gone, I just don’t have any left in me to feel at all. I just feel… tired.” She turned away a bit, almost ashamed to admit such a vulnerable thing to a cat she knew she was once so harsh towards. (It's all good! Icefire15 here ya go!) Ghostscreech paused and looked back at Frostmoon as she suddenly spoke, flicking his ear. Now she wanted to talk to him? “Then maybe we should let them continue to think that.” He said, turning away and moving forward again. “They’ll get too comfortable and let their guard down eventually. And besides, it’s not up to me when we take them back. It’ll be Lightningstar’s decision in the end.” Eclipsestorm glanced at Autumnfall, feeling the obvious tension between the deputy and Frostmoon, “M-maybe we should hunt on the way back to camp when we’re done marking the border. I’m sure the extra prey we find could help the clan.” She suggested, trying to change the subject. Sunthroat braced himself as Dawnpaw landed on his shoulders, trying not to wince as he felt his muscles strain under the weight of his apprentice. “Good job. A bit shaky, but you’re getting the hang of it. Let’s do it again a couple more times, then we’ll move on to the next step.” He said. Sunthroat could feel that his body was certainly getting weaker with age, it was the reason he stepped down as deputy. But he didn’t think about how difficult it was starting to get to keep up with the young ones now. Owlfrost stayed silent as Mothsong spoke before heaving a sigh, looking away from her, “StarClan, when did you get so depressing?” He said bluntly shaking his head, “And here I was thinking you hated just about everything.” Owlfrost looked back at Mothsong, studying her intently before giving her a harsh nudge, “Come on, up on your paws. You’ve sulked over here enough.”

You’ve sulked over here enough.” "Or, they'll start strengthening their numbers more and realize they want more than just Sunningrocks." Frostmoon responded firmly, stung at Ghostscreech's response, yet reminding herself that it wasn't like he owed her any kindness. They weren't mates or anything after all, and she doubted he would even consider it. She stared at him this time, a flash of her mother's brevity and her father's boldness guiding her words. "You're Lightningstar's deputy. If anyone actually has any possible way of persuading him to think about that, it's you. Not me, or the other Warriors, we're all just waiting for the selection to defend the Clan." She couldn't tell him that she dreaded the thought of being chosen to go on a patrol to try and reclaim the rocks after her failure last time, but if another cat led the patrol, at least then she could try and prove herself with another chance. She felt guilt at how selfish it seemed, but it was hard not to think about what she could have done better. Autumnfall widened her eyes as Frostmoon seemed to ignore Eclipsestorm's suggestion entirely. The muscular she-cat could tell this was something entirely different than just a disagreement. What in Starclan was going on? She was so sure that Frostmoon and Ghostscreech liked eachother, where was all this coming from. She blinked and mewed. "Uhhh... yeah, Eclipsestorm has the right idea, maybe we should hunt a bit, like. Right now. Or like. Talk about our feelings in Peachdapple's den and not on the patrol that Autumnfall decides to join because it sounded like a good plan at the time?" "I'll do it as many times as I can to do it right." Dawnpaw nodded, dedicated to preforming as best as he could for Thunderclan's former deputy. He leaped from Sunthroat's shoulders and backed up to ready himself to try again. "Huh?" Mothsong startled at that, fur bristling a bit as she cast a sharp and confused glance at Owlfrost, before her ears fell and her gaze wilted at his attempts. "I don't hate everything, you moss-eared mouse! Why do you care anyway? I'd think this is a good time to tell me I deserve it. I know you want to." She huffed, not really blaming him if he did. Starclan, why did he always have to be so much... nicer, than her? How could he even want to, after she had been a hypocrite and judged him for things that she herself was just as enriched in?

"I'm no good at fighting. I don't want to have to fight SkyClan if the agreement falls through." she said, hoping her mate would agree. "I can't imagine you doing anything else." Aspenfall stated confidently, looking at his mentor with brighter eyes. "Though, it'll be hard to adjust to a medicine cat den without you." He suddenly felt the need to address a certain situation and dropped his gaze. "When my father was... punished, how did you handle him being out of the den?"

If I could only ever hunt, I would." Dapplenight agreed, grimacing at the thought of having to fight or draw blood for any reason. It was much easier for him to serve the clan with hunting and maintaining camp. He looked at his mate and murmured. "Ghostscreech and Peachdapple are pretty level-headed, and Russetfox wouldn't jeopardize such an important patrol, I don't think. So... I guess it's the best route we could have taken, I hope." "He was always in camp, but Starclan, was it still lonely." Peachdapple admitted, not one to be dishonest with her apprentices. "Your father did have the spark. He did his job so efficiently and so eagerly. I know he wanted to heal... but I also know that he wanted something that I myself wished I could have, for so, so long." She looked pointedly at Aspenfall, voice soft. "He wanted you, and your siblings, and he wanted that kind of love that tests Medicine Cats everyday. I don't hold ill will towards him for it. Lightningstar did not either, when he chose to make that choice for Slatesight, because your grandfather loved your mother, and he loved you, and Slatesight had to be a part of that lest he would waste that opportuniuty." Peachdapple closed her eyes, a breath escaping her as she finally admitted her most painful secret. "Starclan came to me, when Mossfeather was determined to get me to switch my training. I wanted so badly when I was young to have that whimsical life of a Warrior, grow big and strong, meet a tom who would race through the forest with me, be a happy mother, just like my mother was. Starclan told me that my big dreams were just that, because my insides were empty. A kit could never grow inside of me, and nothing could fix it. It was empty and barren, and it took me a very long time to come to terms with it. It still does, even now." She opened her eyes, and looked at Aspenfall. "Slatesight had a chance to have a path that a Medicine Cat like me never could. He took it, and I am grateful he did, because he gave me you." She smiled then, gentle and kind. "Slatesight will always be my apprentice. He will always be welcome in my den, and welcome to help when the Clan needs it. So it was lonely, but I was not ever angry."

She always hated seeing her Clanmates get injured and how those events typically caused her paws to remain planted on the ground in fear. She didn't want to be useless in helping the Clan, so she preferred to hunt like her mate did. "That's what I thought." Aspenfall commented, Peachdapple's remarks reinforcing what he knew about his father. "I know Father had a connection with the life of a medicine cat, or at least the herbs and healing... I think he passed that connection down to me." he raised his head and met his mentor's gaze. "I may not understand the desire to live the life both you and Slatesight wanted, but I think I understand the role I need to play here. StarClan chose me to succeed Slatesight where he couldn't from the moment my eyes caught a glimpse of the medicine cat den." he mewed.

"That's all we can hope for." Dapplenight nodded, though a short fall of his ears showcased his own nervousness about the situation. He was grateful that Plumfur was always able to understand his nervousness, he supposed it was what made them work so well together. He finished his half of the pigeon and gently pushed the rest to her. "Lightningstar will surely talk about it soon." "In the end, it will make you a better Medicine Cat than either of us could ever be. This was a position you were born for, and one you have always wanted. As much as he hoped otherwise, Hornetstrike told me long before you earned your name that he knew sooner or later you would end up here. He was always proud of you, whether you were his apprentice or my apprentice." Peachdapple admitted. "I think the whole clan knew at that point with how often you'd watch me work when you thought I wasn't looking." She smirked, voice smooth and playful.

Lightningstar looked at his deputy as he approached. “Good you’re back.” He spoke before standing to move into his den. He beckoned Ghostscreech and Peachdapple to follow him.

Lightningstar looked at his deputy as he approached. “Good you’re back.” He spoke before standing to move into his den. He beckoned Ghostscreech and Peachdapple to follow him. (Cloning Ms.Peachy! ) Peachdapple promptly pushed her way into Lightningstar’s den, her voice betraying her contentment with the newfound deal. “Went as seamlessly as a deal could go. Luckily it was Spirtstar, I hoped her compassion would shine through. Above that, I can already tell we’ll benefit from the herbs we can trade.” She admitted.

Ghostscreech sat down and waited for Peachdapple to finish speaking before giving his own report, “And she also agreed to letting us pass through her territory to get to the twolegplace.” He said, wrapping his tail around his paws. “She will send a patrol with us when we go, to be sure that we aren’t taking any prey from SkyClan territory.”

Lightningstar nodded his head as he listened. “Good. It sounds like everything turned out as we had hoped.” He spoke. “We will send a patrol tomorrow then.” He looked at Ghostscreech. “Anything else?”

“Spiritstar said she will have a patrol meet ours at dawn and sunhigh for each patrol.” Ghostscreech reported, “I believe sending a patrol of three warriors and one apprentice will be enough for our side of the patrol, and I suspect Spiritstar will probably do the same. It might be safe to be sure that a warrior who has experience in the twolegplace is on each patrol.” He added, looking back at Lightningstar.

"Me too... I hope they did the right thing." Plumfur agreed, a frown forming on her face as she imagined a fight between the patrol and the SkyClan cats breaking out. Plumfur briefly shifted her gaze to the leader's den. "I think I saw Ghostscreech and Peachdapple go in there earlier, so maybe he'll call a meeting after they're done," she suggested, pulling the pigeon close to her so she could finish it. "Lightningstar always does a good job at telling us what's going on. I'm glad he's our leader..." Aspenfall looked a little sheepish at that. "I am glad that Hornetstrike understood. I was ashamed to disappoint him, especially since..." he trailed off for a moment, thinking of a core memory from moons ago. From when we thought he was our father, he finished the statement in his head. "Were you aware that Slatesight was always our father?" he asked, curious to know if she was as unaware as the tom himself used to be.

We're lucky that we've had him... and that we did not lose him to Shadeclaw's plans." Dapplenight admitted, inwardly wondering if Shadeclaw was out there somewhere, plotting to come back, or given up on his desire to lead Thunderclan by force. "You'd never disappoint Hornetstrike. He was just worried that you would have to take a long time to adjust after moons of Warrior training first." Peachdapple assured, before she looked at Aspenfall and offered a small yet sad smile. "I had a feeling. These kinds of things, medicine cats just feel it sometimes. For all your father is great at, he could never hide much from me." She flicked her tail and mewed. "I never voiced my assumptions because at the time, Thunderclan needed our second medicine cat. When Lightningstar realized that it was starting to tear your family apart, I imagine he made that decision so we wouldn't be stuck in a circle of he said, she said."

Lightningstar nodded his head. He moved to stand, “come on. Let’s announce this to the clan.” He spoke.

Peachdapple stood up to follow Lightningstar out of his den, glancing once at Ghostscreech with an oddly knowing look, before she faced forwards again. Looking at the deputy made something flutter within her, and she assumed it was Starclan's way of saying this was the one, this was the right choice. It comforted her as much as it made her heart ache.

Ghostscreech caught Peachdapple’s look and flicked his ear, wondering what the Medicine Cat was thinking at the moment. He shook his head and followed Lightningstar and Peachdapple out of the leader’s den.

Lightningstar stepped from the den, moving around to jump on the high rock. He hesitated a moment, it wasn’t quite as easy these days. He jumped up however. He shook his head and look at the clan. “Thunderclan! All cats old enough to catch their own prey join beneath high rock for a clan meeting!”

Darktail looked curiously at Midnightstream as he heard Lightningstar’s call. “Think this is about the patrols?” He asked, hurrying away from their new nest to gather for the meeting.
Blizzardstorm herded Twilightkit and Tansykit back towards the nursery.
Seafoam stretched out in front of the elder’s den, looking around for Badgernight.
My other cats gathered.

“Must be.” Midnightstream finished up the last of the nest before she followed Darktail out of the den.

Ghostscreech sat down, looking over at Lightningstar as he jumped on to the High Rock. He flicked his ear in worry, noticing how his former mentor had hesitated before jumping. He hadn’t noticed before, but it seemed that Lightningstar’s age was starting to show. Giving another small shake of his head, Ghostscreech looked out at the clan as they started to gather, his eyes looking for the familiar white pelt of Frostmoon out of habit.
Lionkit stood at the entrance of the nursery, “I wanna see the meeting!” He squeaked at his father when Blizzardstorm ushered his siblings in.
