Sandstorm is honestly one of my favorite characters. And I'll admit I used to be one of the Spottedleaf lovers when I was younger, but now I prefer Sandstorm because she's a better written character.
I think people only dislike her (mostly younger children) because she bullied Firepaw. She judged him for being a kittypet, but she grew to respect him after Fireheart saved her life during the battle. She didn't grow to respect him because of her rank - I am not understanding why people think that - no, she grew to respect him because she saw past his kittypet heritage and knew that he would make a valuable warrior of ThunderClan.
Sandstorm and Cinderpelt have had some tensions between them, but that's because they were both in love with Firestar. But in the end, Sandstorm still supported Cinderpelt. She didn't let her feelings get the best of her, she didn't want Cinderpelt to vanish like the dew. No, she grew to be a mature character and supported her, staying friends with Cinderpelt instead of taking out her jealousy on her.
Sandstorm had issues with Firestar and Spottedleaf on their journey to find SkyClan. So what? Sandstorm had a pretty good reason to be angry with him. Firestar was seeing Spottedleaf behind her back! If you really think about it, it's almost like he was cheating on her. Firestar and Spottedleaf were meeting in secrets in their dreams - even when it wasn't necessary, mind you. And Sandstorm did respect Spottedleaf, in the end, when Spottedleaf told her that Firestar moved her and knew she was the perfect mate for him.
Sandstorm had Leafkit and Squirrelkit. Squirrelflight took after her mother's personality whereas Leafpool might have had Firestar's. She was a good mother to her kits.
Sandstorm's personality is strong. She has a quick temper, but she has a strong sense from what's right and what's wrong. She helps supports Firestar during his leadership, they've had a huge history together, and they've had kits. It's been said she would love to have more, but knew that Firestar had to focus on his Clan.
Sandstorm is probably one of the best well-written characters and I wish younger readers would see past her when she was an apprentice, mind you, bullying Firepaw, and her jealousy over Spottedleaf. Yes, she was harsh with Firestar, but Firestar was also foolish enough to think that it was okay to see Spottedleaf behind her back.
I don't really care too much about Spottedleaf anymore since my opinions are always mixed up on her, but I sure as hell will always love Sandstorm for her strong personality. Sandstorm is a great character and she's a perfect supporter for Firestar.

Eh....personally I'm not big on her. I'm neutral to like, she's okay, but to me she's just "there". I didn't like the way she treated Firestar initially, after re-reading the books, her behavior if anything was a level under Shrewclaw, along with Dustpelt. It was pretty nasty, kinda a turn off toward her character. It sucks because even if she developed later on, it doesn't change the impact she made when initially introduced. At least to me it didn't. Yeah I was sad when she kicked the bucket, but I'm not really "in love" with her character per say. Not to mention the arguments Firestar and her got in over Spottedleaf, and also about what apprentice she'd get, etc. Idk, I found them annoying, not her annoying, just the arguments. There's not much I can really say aside from that, I kinda wish she had more of a defining role in the plot besides being Firestar love interest if anything.

And plenty of others have been judged for being kittypet, like Daisy, Millie, or even cats just by simply staying have been called as "disloyal" like Stormfur or Brook. Sandstorm matured in the end and she has developed. Just like any other regular apprentices, she didn't handle her feelings well and she was still childish. Pretty much a lot of the ThunderClan cats were judgmental to kittypets and even Mousefur called a Clan meeting and believed that ThunderClan might be getting "mixed". Sandstorm even at one point defended Daisy to stay. She's changed, much more than other cats and development and has accepted Firestar for being a kittypet and loved him for who he was.

Like I said, I get she's matured past that, but it still doesn't change the impact she made on many readers when she was first introduced. I'm not one of the "younger readers" either, I've been reading these books ever since they came out, 11 years. And even now I'm not really big on Sandstorm or her character as a whole. I guess the only reason I was upset she died was because of nostalgia? Imo, like you said she was a "good supporter to Firestar" but that's just it....she was just an accessory to the MC of the story. Getting a mate, and having kits, is probably one of the most solid things a cat can do to prove their loyalty in a clan. Also there's always gotta be some love interest for the protagonist, and I'm kinda disappointed that that's all the Erin's treated Sandstorm as. Same with Spottedleaf. Spottedleaf was a great medicine cat, but outside of her feelings for Firestar, we didn't really know much about her. Every time she showed up that's all the focus was really own, at least the sub-focus. And it's pretty much the same with Sandstorm. It's really cliche'. As a person that loves romance in books, and loves reading and watching shows, live action, or even animated, romance is usually one of those hooks to the viewers. The whole "tsundere that hates the protagonist but later warms up to him and they become a couple and they give birth to the new generation" is so common.....Outside of being Firestar's mate there's not much to even say about Sandstorm...Cinderpelt became a medicine cat despite her disability and has grown to love and accept her role, imo I think she's one of the best developed characters from the first arc. But Sandstorm...all we really read her as is the cat that used to bully Firestar but later became his mate after accepting his kittypet roots, that's about it. There's no more in detail about her family, her father's death, her fallout with Dustpelt, they barely even talked after getting mates. Or what about her being special in some way, and not in a way of being a love interest, but ya know...something else. Something more genuine and more focused.

Wait. Cinderpelt is in love with Fireheart?! Where did that come from? The Erins confirmed it years ago. In the app, it states that Cinderpelt loved Firestar the moment she became his apprentice and the books hint that Cinderpelt loved Firestar as well, especially in A Dangerous Path and Twilight. This was why Cinderpelt attacked Leafpool when they were fighting after Cinderpelt confronted her about Crowfeather.

I really don't mind Sandstorm actually. As an apprentice, she was meh. When she actually started looking up to Firestar as a decent cat, I started to like her.
I never actually liked Spottedleaf. I don't know much about her and I haven't read her ebook yet.

Shattered Sky comes out the same day.

Oh. Really?
You mentioned that Erins said that Cinderpelt was in love with Firestar via some app. Which app?

I agree with Maplefrost with pretty much all she said. While I do acknowledge that that Sandstorm has done good things for ThunderClan, it just doesn't change my opinion of her. When she died I felt more like nostalgia because she was an original character from The Prophecies Begin. And I do see that she's grown, but I still just don't care for her.

@owlstar it was also hinted a few times- like when Sandstorm and Cinderpelt were having a rough time with each other I think in A Dangerous Path, and when Leafpool accused Cinderpelt of not understanding love, she was furious and said she didn't know that or something like that.
