Star woke to see the blue sky stretching far off into the distance. She stared for a moment, for she thought she saw a small black speck moving. When t came into view, she could tell it was Night. “Night!” She called. “Hi!” Night veered towards her. As he landed near her, she rushed forward. “Hi,” He said. “Night, what were you doing?” She asked, curious. “Nothing.” “I know you weren’t doing nothing. Tell me!” She pleaded. “Fine,” He said. Her showed her a book. “It's a book of-” Star interrupted him. “A book of maps and diagrams of the city! But why?” She asked. “Because… because I wanted to explore something I found…. A few days ago.” He said. Star stared in surprise. “Wow!” She exclaimed. “That's great! Let's tell Lilypad!” “Fine,” Night responded, and Star spread her wings and took off towards Lilypad. She spotted her by a pond, and landed next to Lilypad, Night beside her, “Hey!! Night found something cool!” She emphasized the word cool. Night rolled his eyes. “It's a book of maps and diagrams of the city.” He said. Lilypad’s eyes widened. “Cool!” She said. “But.. does it involve flying? You know I can’t do it very well….” “Don’t worry!” Star said. “We’ll catch you if we need to.” “Okay…” Lilypad said. “Let’s go.”
They flew low to the ground and found an entrance to a small door. “Look!” Said Star. “A door!” “We can see it, Star,” Said Night, rolling his eyes. Lilypad timidly stepped forward. “We can do it.” “Yes we can!” Star said, and opened the door. They went down some stair, then stopped abruptly. “The stairs stop here..” Whispered Lilypad. “We’ll need to….fly.” The last word came out a squeak. “Don’t worry,” Said Star. “We can do it.” Star flew to the other side, and Night stayed to help Lilypad across. They made it, and continued onward. They came to a brittle ledge. “Let’s go!” Said Star. Lilypad hung back. “Don’t worry,” came Night's gentle voice. “I’ll be with you every step of the way.” Lilypad took a deep breath and stepped forward. Night stepped beside her. “The ground…. It's under the clouds, and we’re under the clouds a little bit too. The ground is so far down…. What if I fall?” Lilypad said. “Don’t worry,” Night said. “It’ll be fine.” Once they had gotten to the middle of the ledge, a deafening crack sounded. Night leapt to the other side, but Lilypad was frozen with fear “Lilypad!” Night cried. “Come on!” Lilypad leapt forward, but the stone crumbled from beneath her and she fell, down, down, down to the ground below. Night dove after her. “Lilypad!!” He yowled. He grasped her scuff in his teeth, but the wind was to strong and they were falling faster. “I’m sorry,” Lilypad said. She touched her nose with Night’s. “I can’t fly. Let me go.” “No!” Night yowled. “I won’t!” Lilypad curled herself protectively around Night. Her voice sounded in his ear. “Them I’ll have to protect you from the fall. I love you Night, and now is not your time to die. I’m so sorry.” Lilypad clenched her eyes closed and braced herself for the impact. She knew she would never see the light again.
Night woke, his breathing shuddering. “Lilypad..?” He saw her crumpled on the ground in front of him. “Lilypad!” He cried. Lilypad’s eyes opened slowly. “I’m sorry, Night.. I’m so, so sorry..” Her eyes closed. Night saw the blood around her wings, bent and crumpled, and her back legs twisted awkwardly. “Lilypad! No!” He cried. He buried his face in her fur. He sobbed sadly.
Hours later, he woke. “Lilypad! Where is she!” He cried. A black she cat, his mother, shook her head. “I’m sorry, Night.” She said. “She died protecting you from the fall. Its not your fault. Her parents don't blame you. She loved you, Night" Night dropped his head down over come ith greif. "One more thing," His mother continued slowly. "You only have one good wing."
1 Moon Later
Night sat at Lilypad’s grave, his head bowed. He still missed her greatly. “One day I’ll see you again,” He whispered. “In the stars, we’ll be together again..” He looked up, and thought he saw her beautiful face smiling down on him from the stars. He heard her voce whispering among cloudy ferns and whispy grasses:
I know we will, Night. And I'll wait for you for however long it takes....
The End
