Awwwww, Fawnspots is so cute Hawky! I like her design here better than her design in the original comic (or at least, the design I remember from the flashback in the Unforgiven?), I don't think she had the darker patch there. Very cute. And Lavenderstar can draw, that's neat! c:

Fawnspots is a vaguely familiar name.
I never read the original comic, nor is it a canonical name.
I wonder where I've heard it before.

Rub a pebble long enough and it can eventually shine.

I wish my comic was anywhere near as good as yours honestly mine sucks and then there's yours, it's like a pebble next to a finely-carved golden statue My man, you'll never get anywhere if you keep comparing yourself to me or anyone else's work! There will always be someone better than you, and that's just a fact that artists need to accept. I know that sounds conceited (please don't read that as me saying 'i'm better than you ha-ha!' 'cause I'm not! I would never want to sound that mean, i'm just stating an example and have no better way of relating it), especially coming from myself, but it's something I have to remind myself of as well. I'll look at other people's comics and be like 'wow their anatomy is so amazing, mine needs some work.' or 'wow they don't use MS paint and their coloring is so pretty, maybe I should try another program'. One of the most important things in comic making is that if you can't look at others art for only inspiration and maybe a standard to shoot for in the future instead of 'wow they're so much better than me, I shouldn't even try', then don't look at others' work at all.
If you choose the latter route of being so unable to stop comparing yourself to others (or add this next part as a bonus to the first option; it would make it even better!) you have to 100% convince yourself that what you're making is something that people want to see/read. You have to convince yourself beyond shadow of doubt that people want to read this story that you're making. That was how I got through the first Yin and Yang. And many of my comics afterwards. I convinced myself that my stories were something that people needed to read. And if you do that, you'll want/need to continue to tell it. Whether you want to or not, or realize it, your art will improve by the simple fact that you are drawing the same general thing over and over again. It's a byproduct of making a comic. update: i swear you had another comment on here that I was gonna put this part on, but oh well I'll put it here. Also, to add on... my dude, you must understand that I've been in the comic 'business' for nearly a decade now. Like... seven years I think. And it's taken that long to get where I am now. I have a lot of practice with telling a story and making the art to go along with it. And that doesn't by any means mean that my comic/art is perfect and doesn't need any more work! You can always get better, and working hard and practicing is the only way to get there! You can't achieve these results without putting everything you have into your work, not comparing yourself to others, and most importantly not telling yourself over and over that what you do is terrible and will never get better. That is the worst possible thing to do because if you do it too much, you'll start to believe it. And of course, it will never be true. Anyone can be great, anyone can improve: Rub a pebble long enough and it can eventually shine. Yes! Exactly! But of course, rubbing that pebble takes work and time and practice! It's the same with comic making! You can only get shinier if you work for it! Talent isn't (usually) innate, it comes with hard work and practice!

This comic is beautiful! The backgrounds are just magnificent and I love your individual art style. The expressions of the cats just make me jealous, they're so on point! I really love this comic and want to hear more of it ( Or should I say see? ) But anyways, this is great. I really want to hear more about Skullstripe's affair with Fawnspots, because those cliffhangers just make me want more.
Congrats on your progress by the way throughout the years!

Hawktalon, The thing is, though, that Ensemble (my comic) doesn't fit anywhere. It's a politically-charged creature of mayhem told by a compendium of crudely-drawn cats based off of centuries-old stories that nobody really even cares about. It has to have a disclaimer so people know what they're getting into, because it is incredibly dark and violent to the point where I was surprised the mods actually let me put it up here at first. There's no good place for such a thing as it, yet it is the only story I have had any motivation to make at all for the past six years. It's always either too high-cultured for people's tastes or it taints the work of Mozart for people, never in between. Too conservative or too liberal, too cartoony or too violent, and my drawing style is always too ugly. It is always "too" of something, and my friends that I've tried to display it to say it has no sense behind it... Or they're too scared to even look at it.

It is always "too" of something, and my friends that I've tried to display it to say it has no sense behind it... Or they're too scared to even look at it. Hmm... I did take a look at it. I'm gonna agree with you and not sugar coat it, your art style does need work. It is kind of messy and the text is sometimes hard to read and follow. Also, you might want to study anatomy a bit. But! What I do love so much is how much lore you put into it! You've made a whole world there and it's so full and interesting! I think you have a really unique and interesting story going on! But you are also right. A lot of people (here on the forums I guess) aren't looking for stories as complicated as yours is. This can work for or against you, and at the moment, it's the latter. Fortunately for you, I can see that you obviously love what your doing, or at least that you have so much knowledge about what you're writing about. There is so much cool information about music and composers and history in your comic, and it's all so neat! You could really help people learn with it! Political comics are also hard to do. A lot of people I don't think want it thrown in their face. But if it's important to you (it obviously is, you know so much about it!), I think it should be something that you need to tell! Since the beginning, I've made it a point to teach lessons in my comics, and beginning more with Skyfall, I've been trying to put in just a little bit of social commentary (not like yours, of course. Just a little, which you can find in Virgil's speech near the end of the comic, or what Minos says to Aurora at the amphitheater) into them, to make it interesting yes, but to do the same thing that flat out saying "this is the lesson of this story" does (which is what happens in my other comics). To be honest, my next comic (which is in the planning/scripting stage at the moment) is planned to go further in that vein of having just a bit of social commentary through allegory. I don't know how it's going to go, if people will like it and want to keep reading, or if people think it's too much or don't agree and stop. But that's not going to make me stop drawing or writing it. Because I think it's important and I think it's a story that needs to be told. What I think you should do is this. Don't stop. Don't stop by any means. You should keep doing what you're doing (which, as I said, your art will improve along the way, it's a side affect) and don't care what people say or whether people read it at all (people will read it, I'm sure! Its a unique story!). That is what I had to do for the original Yin and Yang. There were so many better comic artists on the old Forums back in the day (that day being 2007), and their work got read so much more than mine did. But I didn't compare myself to them, I made them a standard. I said to myself that yeah, one day I will be as good as theirs is!
