"I can't catch any scent of them." Lynxdapple shook his head firmly as he carefully inspected the area. "While the scent of the Thunderpath can be strong, a fresh enough scent should still be traceable..." The older tom gave a disappointed sigh. "I don't think they've made it here. If they did, maybe there's a trace farther down the Thunderpath?" He offered.
"I've never seen Ratmask look like that about his kits..." Burninghope admitted as she poked and prodded around every bush and fallen pine log she could. "Usually he seems so flippant about them. But he looked pretty shaken up." She mewed, sympathy in her voice.

Tumblefoot took a deep breath, a little relieved that it didn't seem like the kits came this way. "Let's check along the border to SkyClan. I'll feel better if we rule out every edge of this thunderpath."
Houndthroat flicked his ear, pausing to listen further into the forest. "I know what you mean," he muttered back to Burninghope. "I didn't think anything bothered Ratmask. He's always so stand-offish except around Leaffrost."

Koishade led the RiverClan patrol outside of camp. She flicked her ear in acknowledgement and turned to look at Owlwhisker at his comment. "They... what?" she asked. "Their own pelts?" She could count the number of twolegs she'd seen in her life in one moment; she definitely didn't know anything about their habits.

He imagined how distraught he would be if Oakfall, Lilywhisper and Hollyvine had gone missing as kits, and it made his stomach twist. He followed quickly after Tumblefoot. “He’s the prickliest cat I know. I don’t think any cat has a glare like Ratmask does…” Burninghope admitted, padding a little farther down to scan the other side of the forest. “Though, there must be another side to him we don’t see, if Leaffrost loves him so deeply, and Lilywhisper respects him so much.” She looked at Houndthroat then, a slightly knowing look in her eye, though she kept the words to herself. Now was not the time to try and inch Houndthroat into realizing Lilywhisper totally had moon eyes for him. After they found the kits, then she would start her teasing.

She could count the number of twolegs she'd seen in her life in one moment; she definitely didn't know anything about their habits. “Yes! Those colorful pelts twolegs wear, and they all wear different pelts, some of them are all completely woven together by a twoleg. One twoleg used to give other twolegs some pelts, and the twoleg getting the pelt would give them some green tree bark and shiny flat stones in exchange. It was really funny to watch.” Owlwhisker giggled, before he flicked his long tail. “I was never a kittypet, but my sister and I liked to watch the twolegs do their weird twoleg things.” He seemed to sadden a bit at the mention of Tessa, but his smile still remained, warm as ever.

Koishade sniffed slightly. "That sounds weird. But I guess we decorate our dens with shiny rocks, too." She couldn't imagine wearing a different pelt every day. "Do you think twolegs fear water?" she asked. As long as they stayed away from their territory, she didn't care what they did.

"Do you think twolegs fear water?" she asked. As long as they stayed away from their territory, she didn't care what they did. "Quite the opposite, from what I saw! Twolegs sometimes swim in big puddles that never dry up, and there's always a bunch of them when it gets warm outside. But, they don't seem to like coming around here to swim as much." Owlwhisker mewed, honest in his explanation as he eyed some of the approaching reeds. "I don't say it often but... I'd say they can be pretty fast in the water. Scarily fast, if they're a grown twoleg. The kits are clumsier, they just splash around. Some twolegs swim super fast, back and forth, back and forth... I wondered if they were chasing fish!"

"That's... a little frightening." Koishade lashed her tail as she spotted reeds nearby. Could a twoleg really swim faster than a cat? "Just imagine one trying to chase us in the water. I don't want anything larger than us swimming in the same space." she shook her head. And eating fish, too? What if they found out about the fish in the river?

Just overly curious and super loud and nosy. Most seem to really like us, but Starclan do they like to try and pick us up. They do drop good food sometimes." Owlwhisker admitted, before he gave a little look of apology. "Not that I eat that anymore! That was way before I joined Riverclan. Fish are way better when they're freshly caught."

Koishade found a strong patch of reeds and moved to carefully take them down without breaking them. "I didn't mean to judge," she apologized as she started making a pile of reeds. Learning about the twolegs was interesting, but she didn't want to alienate Owlwhisker any further. "It sounds like your life was quite different from ours. I wonder if the other Clans know about twolegs like you do."

"My life was different, but my life was also never secured until Mistfall saved me from the river. I would have been stuck with that group of rouges, being someone I wasn't, you know? I loved my sister... but she had lost herself, and I lost her because of it. Twolegs are odd, but nowhere near as fascinating as the Clans. It's better we both stay away from eachother." He admitted, before quickly moving to help her gather materials.

Koishade looked at him curiously when he mentioned his sister. She admittedly didn't know too much of his past aside from being a rogue, but didn't want to press anything further. "Well, I'm glad you're here with us," she reassured, continuing to search for any strong reeds. "We appreciate having you and... you seem happier." she observed.

I never would have met any of you, or Littleshadow, if I didn't come here." Owlwhisker purred, thinking fondly of his mate. He had never thought he'd have a mate, but Starclan was he glad that he did now. "So! Back to the work! How much do you think we'll need? Probably alot, huh?"

Koishade smiled slightly in response. She was glad to have a chipper and friendly ally in the Clan, and it seemed like he belonged here instead of with any vicious rogues. "Well, we might be in trouble if some of the reeds on our dens freeze. We should grab enough to replace anything that's getting brittle." she mewed. "But we should also take care not to take everything, or else it won't grow back."

"But we should also take care not to take everything, or else it won't grow back." "Right. That wouldn't be good at all, if we had no reeds left for the next leafbare to roll around." Owlwhisker nodded quickly, beginning to sift through the reeds to find the driest ones, void of too much water that they would freeze too easily. He watched Koishade for a moment as he worked, before he placed another reed on his pile and admitted. "I'm surprised it hasn't snowed yet."

"I'm a bit surprised, too." Koishade agreed, fluffing out her fur and adding a bundle of reeds to her own pile. "You would think that we'd be in the heart of leaf-bare right now. When it snows, I usually look like nothing but a pile of splotches..." she said. "It's a good thing we don't live on the moor like WindClan does."

Owlwhisker cackled, making himself laugh before he admitted. "Windclan sure are something. I haven't been to their camp, but apparently they hardly have any dens! They just sleep out in the cold!" He exclaimed.

Koishade made a face at that fact. She had nothing against WindClan, but that wasn't a life that she would want to live in. "I... I think I'll stick to the river and our reed dens." she mewed. "I guess there's something to it if they can make it through."

"I guess there's something to it if they can make it through." "A cat will do anything to survive, in any environment." Owlwhisker hummed, though his eyes suddenly seemed to veer off into the distance as he stared across the shallow water. He soon blinked the odd trance away, shaking his head and smiling brightly again. "I guess Windclan just knows what to do to keep themselves stable, just like we do here. Pretty neat, that's why Clan life's the best life." He purred, piling up his pile of reeds until he couldn't take anymore.

"You're right." Koishade ducked her head to grab the now finished bundle of reeds. There were plenty between the two of them to provide for the Clan. "I think we have enough now. Should we head back?"

Splashstone padded slowly along the ledge of the gorge, staring towards the towering waterfall with heavy eyes. The world was still so grey, and knowing that Siltpath and Jasmineheart seemed to be getting closer was both a happy and a heavy feeling. Strength from moons of training in the Dark Forest coursed through him, yet Meadowbrook’s treachery still sat in his mind.
He wanted to hate how water felt on his pelt, and yet he just couldn’t fight it much anymore how little it affected him, even feeling nice at times. He lumbered down towards the bottom of the gorge, marking the border for Windclan but slowly letting his paws break water as he stepped through the shallow bank.

Not sensing anyone else around on either side of the territory, he called out quietly. “Splashstone? Is that you?” Splashstone lifted his head, bristling for a moment, before he relaxed. He had no use to blame fate or Starclan for the coincidence of his father being here, he didn’t believe much in either anymore. Any other Warrior would have hissed a warning, but all the saddened tom did was sit right down in the shallow bank and look across the border at his father. “That’s me.” He mewed, not even able to muster any fake brightness. “I’m by myself. You won’t get chased off.”

Splashstone was silent for a moment, not wanting to admit that he often came out to look down in the gorge, and awful thoughts would sometimes whisper at him, until he would force them out by slowly climbing down the gorge instead. He looked at his paws for a moment before he looked at Stormsplash again. “…I put my paws in the water sometimes. But the noise here is nice. It takes my mind off things. Why are you out alone?” He asked.

Stormsplash hummed thoughtfully, a frown present on his face at Splashstone's belated answer. "I was just going for a walk. Needed to get out of camp for a while. Thought I would check the borders while I was out. Isn't it quite dangerous to climb down the gorge all by yourself?" he asked, eyes concerned. "What if you fell?"

That would be my fault.” Splashstone mewed tersely, though his eyes seemed to wilt for a moment, something deep and painful filling in him because he could imagine being an apprentice and being scolded about getting too close to the gorge by his father. He could imagine Stormsplash teaching him how to swim or hunt or how to talk to she-cats without feeling like a fool. But that was just a fantasy, and he couldn’t look Stormsplash in the eye when he answered the tom’s question. “I come here all the time, I know my way down safely, it… you don’t need to worry.”

Stormsplash stayed silent for a moment, conflicting feelings swirling inside of him. Of course he was worried about his son, but did he really have a right to scold him? He hadn't help raise him, Rainfeather had done that. Stormsplash had sat in Riverclan for moons and moons pretending they didn't exist. Yet, here he was, heart swelling with worry for the son he had always wanted. "I... I don't want to overstep Splashstone. I know you don't owe me anything. But I do have to worry about you, you're my son. I know you're a grown warrior and.. I know Rainfeather raised you well. But young warriors no matter how skilled can still slip and fall. Just promise me you'll be careful okay?"

If Stormsplash didn’t care, he wouldn’t have asked. He wouldn’t have even brought up the gorge or how dangerous it was, if he was just talking to a cat from another Clan. It was such a stupid little thing, but Splashstone couldn’t help but feel all the moons of sadness well up inside of him and begin to crash over. “I wish I could have been your son everyday. I wanted it so badly. Furyflame and Jasmineheart know who they are and where they’ve always belonged but I… I just…” His ears fell, and he sniffed. “I promise. I promise, because it’s you.”
