Prologue
It was sunhigh. A lean black tabby crawled out of the bushes, a wind was blowing softly, and the tabby opened his mouth to smell the air.
I thought I said sunhigh, the tabby thought. He then sniffed the hot greenleaf air again. "Coldstar-" he began, but a black tom cut him off.
"Pantherstripe, what news do you bring me?" the black tom asked.
"Well, Mossstar lost his sixth life," Pantherstripe meowed, "and we're low on kits too, so soon ShadowClan will be rid of the ThunderClan scum."
"Well that sounds-" Coldstar began, but then his eyes widened, and he snapped his head around to a rustling bush. Pantherstripe sprinted away as fast as he could.
"Coward!" Coldstar screamed. Then another black tom crawled out from the bush, this one had a brown chest, and was only an apprentice. Coldstar recognized him immediately.
"Fiercepaw? How much did you hear?" Coldstar asked angrily. Then, a blood curdling yowl came from the trees, and Sandclaw jumped onto Coldstar's back clawing him in the throat.
Then Fiercepaw meowed, "I'll tell Mossstar!"
Sandclaw shot him an angry look and hissed "No, you will absolutely NOT!" Then she was thrown off Coldstar's back, and Fiercepaw launched himself at Coldstar and clawed his front right paw. Every cat for miles around that area heard a snap of a plant, and they all saw Evilkit eating deathberries.
Oh StarClan, not this again! Fiercepaw thought. But before he could blink, he felt something sharp and prickly go through his chest. He felt a sense of foreboding as he looked down. Evilkit had struck a bramble vine through his heart. Scarlet blood was dripping down his fur. But he didn't die. Somehow he was still alive, holding onto his spirit. After a few moments he opened his eyes and woke up.
