Paris Wolfsong Another day, another pointless political ceremony disguised as something more romantic and heartwarming. At least, that was Paris's opinion on the wedding of his nephew. It all seemed rather silly to him. Marriage was overrated in royalty, especially those dictated purely by birthright. Tamlin and this mortal girl had no true relationship. Paris had it on good authority that they had never before even laid eyes on each other, so why was it that they were expected to spend the rest of their lives together without complaint? In fairness, it was much less of an obligation for the prince than for the princess. He would well outlive her, and likely have many wives if the king continued to insist his children marry the mayflies of the mortal court.
Anyway, it goes without saying Paris was one of the few audience members to fail shedding a tear or two. He was on his best behavior, however. He sat in the row behind the core family members such as the King, Princess Thomasin, and a spattering of mortals he could not name. His back was straight against the uncomfortable wood of the pew. He looked quite handsome, or so he liked to think, with his dark hair smoothed back and long legs folded neatly in front of him. When do you think we'll be permitted a glass of wine? he asked Thomasin telepathically. His relationship with his niece was better than with most of his family, perhaps because they both had a certain discomfort in their current positions, she because she'd rather be an explorer and him because he'd rather have a castle of his own. They were an odd pair, but he liked her nonetheless.
If you're thirsty, I'm sure the priest would understand if you took a sip of the holy water, she replied sarcastically. Her back was to him, and he could not read her expression although he could guess from the tightness in her shoulders that she was actually experiencing emotions about the events unfolding before them. Was she sad to see her brother wed? Why? he wondered. It was all part of the routine. And not much would change for the prince, other than a lack of freedom when it came to companionship. But such was the price of wealth and power. Paris would gladly trade places.
He glanced around, tuning out the rehearsed interaction between the bride, groom, and priest. Everyone around him was focused on the proceedings but the man directly to his left, the only person between himself and the far aisle. He did not recognize the dark haired young man and so he assumed he must have been a member of the mortal court. "The reception can't come any sooner, am I right?" murmured Paris to the man, leaning in slightly to not disturb those around them.
"Yes, I can't wait to stretch my legs," replied the man in a low but cordial voice. He was a handsome fellow of a tanned complexion and mischievous eyes. His dress was nice, but not so nice that he could be in the immediate family of the mortal family. His hands were in his pockets and he had a slouchy way of sitting, his lower back almost touching the base of the seat. He had been fidgeting for most of the wedding, Paris had noted some time back. Who was this man? "I would kill for a swig of rum."
"Rum?" inquired Paris, voice tinged with mocking judgement. "That's an odd choice in beverage when sitting in the epitome of luxury." The woman behind them cleared her throat, hinting that they were obstructing her view. Paris was still chuckling as he straightened and he exchanged a glance with the dark haired man. Before he had a chance to ask the man's name, a whistle broke out among the crowd. Paris craned his neck to see what was happening. The bride and groom, who were in the midst of their vows, stopped to look at where the noise had come from. Upon seeing no one among the crowd who could possibly the culprit, Paris instinctively glanced upward. With a reflexive flinch, he brought up his hands to protect his eyes as a chandelier toppled from the ceiling, showering the Cathedral floor with shards of glass. "What the--?" he had no time to complete the sentence as a voice broke out from the chaos.
A man in the rafters was shouting. Paris focused not on his words but rather his actions, as the bastard prince jumped up to do something. He reached for the blade strapped to his ankle. Someone had to protect the king!
"I wouldn't do that if I were you," hissed a voice in his left ear. The man with the dark hair had stood and grabbed Paris by the arm. Paris moved to push him away, only to feel a sharp prick against his back. A knife.

Prince Tamlin
When Thelma looked up, finally, from underneath the flimsy ivory veil that hardly obscured her face, Tamlin was a little surprised. He didn't really think much of the Goss family, but he'd assumed she'd perhaps look a little less like, what was the word, a child? No. A girl? Ugh, no words conveyed how exactly she looked. She was young, but even that word didn't seem to have the same punch to it. The nervousness dissipated, like sunlight burning through mist and he was left with a hollow feeling. He only felt sadness. A feeling he'd only felt a few times before in his life, and even then it was a distant kind of sadness, a melancholy. This, no, this was stronger than melancholy.
As she looked up at him, he met her green eyes and tried to smile, but he found himself almost frozen. This was actually happening. He would never get forever. For once, he was faced with the reality of time, in the form of a living, breathing woman in a white veil. She was attempting to smile, but it failed to reach her eyes. A sorry excuse for a smile. Her green eyes were showing a fear, a sadness, a swirl of anxiety in her eyes that made it impossible for her to look happy. "I'm sorry," Tamlin found himself thinking.
He realized he was trapped in the clutches of his own thoughts again, and glanced briefly away from Thelma at the celebrant marrying them. He glanced back to Thelma, watching her eyes flicker over his face, obviously thinking every hard about something. His lips, which were pressed into a thin line, felt like they were made of stone, and he was breathing so shallowly, every inch of him stiff as a board. The nervousness and melancholy he couldn't place left a weird taste in his mouth and made him still enough he could've been a statue.
Tamlin didn't want to move, didn't want to say anything. He took a deep breath and then he heard his name. “Prince Tamlin Wolfsong, do you take this woman to be your wife; to live together with her in the covenant of marriage? Will you love her, comfort her, honor and keep her, in sickness and in health; and, forsaking all others, be faithful unto her as long as you both shall live?” Was that a joke? Who wrote these vows?
Tamlin nearly did a full-body flinch. He blinked and winced instead, his mouth curling into a slight frown at the words. Anger and sadness rippled through him. He wouldn't have her forever. As long as she lives. Selfish, selfish, selfish. "I do," His voice came out stronger than he thought it would. The first words, he'd ever spoken to Thelma. A promise, a vow, to a woman he didn't even know, and yet he wanted to love and know.
There was a nod from the priest and he turned to Thelma, "Princess Thelma," was all he got out before the Cathedral seemed to explode around everyone. A chandelier had come down in a crash and set a fire blazing. Screams rang out, and the priest, coward that he was, dove for cover away from the action.
Tamlin couldn't think of anything that would've caused it, but at the moment he was suddenly not in any kind of thinking mood. He wrapped his arm around Thelma, and pulled her behind him, as a voice rang out. Someone who was obviously not invited to the wedding. "What the..." He trailed off in a rather strong curse, which probably wasn't favorable considering he was currently standing in a cathedral, but he had no idea what was going on. He glanced behind him. "Are you okay?" He asked, his one arm still wrapped kind of around Thelma awkwardly, considering he had no idea where the threat was coming from and what the actual heck was going on.
