I know this site is fairly new, and I'm not looking to make a profit off of the userbase, but I was wondering: are there any rules regarding sale of art? I am not asking "if I can do this", but "What do the mods think?/Is it safe for the site?"

USD transactions would require a PayPal email. I sell my art on other sites this way and haven't had a problem with it before, but of course it comes with its own set of rules and caveats. Is giving away paypal emails allowed to sell art?

Can offsite currency (deviantart points or CS, FurVilla cash/coins, GaiaOnline stuff, etc) be used in art sales (in place of USD or other real life currency).

I realize this is a complex subject and understand if it isn't allowed, I am just curious! Thank you in advance!

My two cents on the matter: Instead of doing requests straight off here, you could also open commissions on another site (such as deviantart) and advertise that here. That way, there's a safer in-between for the commissions. Many people are using this method (and have been since the old forums as well).
