Brooke was sprawled out across the top of the van on her stomach, laptop in front of her.
It was just past two in the morning, and they were parked in the lot of some seedy restaurant that offered the advantage of free wifi even after closing. This part of Vegas was run-down, dark and quiet, but even from here she could see the lights of the strip. Brooke ached for them. Too much of this trip had been spent in deserts and countrysides, only venturing out to any semblance of civilization for the occasional supply run; she needed the rush and action of a city proper again. Then again, their mission when they got to the strip was going to be less than pleasant. She didn't imagine getting Circe's wand would be easy, and she was trying very hard not to think about the ominous lines of the prophecy. She had other, more practical research to do anyway.
"-so yeah," Tristan said. His image on the screen was blurry and kept freezing up, thanks to the bad connection, but it wasn't hard to tell how worn he looked. There was a row of stitches along the side of his jaw and shadows under his eyes. "Seriously, Brooke, I'm not sure how much longer we can hold up. The borders are basically gone. And more monsters figure that out every day, everyone's on patrol, like, constantly. We can't keep this kind of defense up. We're lucky no one's died yet, camp is basically - GIVE ME A SECOND, COURT."
Brooke flinched back from the noise, watched as he grimaced and ran a hand through his hair. His arm was marked up with nasty, purple-looking claw marks. "Little slow on the uptake there?" she said with a raised eyebrow, but she was curious despite herself. "Are you having a shortage of ambrosia or something?"
Tristan grinned ruefully. "Hellhound got me good. But that's another thing. Ambrosia and nectar, there's something going on with it. It's less effective. I don't know if it's because Khaos is weakening the gods' powers or whatever but it sucks. Even the healers are working double time." Someone called from the background more forcefully. "Look, I really gotta go, but be careful, okay? We're all counting on you guys."
Brooke snapped the laptop shut without saying goodbye, suddenly annoyed, and rolled over onto her back. That had been a crappy, morale-destroying conversation, not at all what she'd hoped for. There was no way she was going to be able to sleep now. She briefly considered waking one of her fellow questees to fill the hours, but she'd probably never be forgiven.

Someone called from the background more forcefully. "Look, I really gotta go, but be careful, okay? We're all counting on you guys." Brooke snapped the laptop shut without saying goodbye, suddenly annoyed, and rolled over onto her back. That had been a crappy, morale-destroying conversation, not at all what she'd hoped for. There was no way she was going to be able to sleep now. She briefly considered waking one of her fellow questees to fill the hours, but she'd probably never be forgiven. Bryanna asleep in the backseat, had been woken up by someone sliding over in their seat and landing on top of another, which would've normally been quiet and unimportant had that person they landed on not been Bry. She blinked a few times trying to process what had just happened and who was now using her legs as a form of pillow. Pulling herself onto her elbows, Bry reached for her watch which she had stored on top of the bag of empty chips that was laying on the ground, a true symbol of their healthy lifestyle on the quest. Using the lights from the nearby city, Bry could see that it was around 2am, too early for anyone to be up, in her opinion. She had just gotten used to living in an American time zone, and now being up at this time wasn't something she enjoyed as much as she first did when she moved to New York. Bryanna started to fall back asleep, letting the watch fall back onto the floor, until she heard the sound of a laptop shutting and something move on the roof. She laid quiet for a moment, looking around and trying to determine the cause of the sound. It sounded much lighter than any monster they had seen, and she'd been attacked enough to know how large they were in person. The sound from the roof wasn't even close to one Bry could place a name to, and so she sat back up again, now wide awake. Her eyes scanned the inside of the van, mentally counting the number of bodies that were asleep. All except one, Brooke. Oh... So it must be her... Bryanna thought with a quiet sigh of relief, before looking up to the roof. Why is she up right now? She questioned, deciding that she was up anyway and might as well see what Brooke was up to. She quietly moved the other questee from her legs and made her way through the van, trying not to make any noise. It was rather hard, considering the fact not everyone slept in a chair; some preferred a sleeping bag on the ground, which Bry could only criticize when it came to bathroom breaks and needing to get out of the car. She managed her way up to the drivers seat, which was empty and opened the door quietly, barely even closing it behind her. Fixing her hair back, Bry walked a few paces forward before turning around to look up at the girl on the roof. "Couldn't sleep?" She called up to Brooke, her voice low as she was still concerned with not waking people up. Bry glanced around the van, looking over at the city that they would soon be entering. A shiver ran up her spine and she decided not to think about what the city foretold for the quest. Helios and the wand. Bry returned her gaze back to Brooke, noticing the laptop in her possession and making the connection as to the sound she had heard moments before.

Brooke started, and stared down at Bry. Usually she was faster on the uptake, but sleep deprivation and stress were taking their toll. She wondered if she'd be the same after everything was over and done with. She hoped so. She'd liked the Brooke who wasn't guardian or designated driver/route planner, the one who skipped out on nights of sleep out of choice instead of necessity and who wasn't more at risk of dying at any moment than any other demigod.
"Hey, there," she chirped, as lightly as she could manage. "Figured I'd get a head start on my research. And then I talked a little with a friend of mine back at camp, for a status update. Don't tell me I woke you or any of the other kiddies up."
It was difficult, with Bry. Not that Bry herself was difficult; she was actually the opposite. She was friendlier than her brother, more open, more willing to cooperate. But in some ironic twist of fate, Brooke had connected better with Bec anyway. Her buoyant personality made it easy to bounce off his moods and occasional sulks where other people might be intimidated or insulted. And she had a healthy respect for his capabilities, having witnessed them first hand. She didn't know much about Bry, and hadn't put much effort into learning by observation like she usually would. Both her and Elle remained puzzling enigmas.
Well. Maybe here was her chance.
"You wanna come on up?" Brooke called down. "View's nice up here, and I can brief you." Gods, please give me something to do.

"No, the rest of the crowd is still asleep." Bryanna replied with a small smile, turning her head to look inside the van full of asleep teens. "I was already awake when I heard you close the laptop." She added, not wanting Brooke to think she was responsible for Bry being up at such an early hour. Sure Bry had started to go back to sleep when she heard Brooke, but it didn't matter anyway. If the trip into Vegas wasn't very exciting Bry could always take a short nap.
When Brooke suggested to climb up onto the roof with her, Bry nodded cheerfully, saying, "Yeah, that sounds better than standing down here." She laughed, although keeping her voice down as she did, still aware of the sleeping group a few paces from her. She climbed up on top of the van, trying to make the least amount of noise possible, which was somewhat hard because she took the hard way to lifting herself up from the side. She was more of a runner than weight lifting.
Once situated in a spot next to Brooke, Bry looked out at the city. "You were right, the view is pretty nice." She confirmed with a small nod before turning to look at Brooke, a more serious expression falling over her head. "So what's going on back at camp?"
