To all writers and authors:
Being an author is a gift. Not a gift as in being good with words and such. A gift as in a privilege. Being an author is a privilege.
There is an infinite number of stories that exist in the universe. Not all of them have the chance to be told, and not all of them will be told, but they all wish to be told. They are like young children. They are wishing with all their might, on a shooting star, that they will get that thing they desire deep within their hearts.
You, as an author, have been given the privilege of becoming that star. Their lucky star. The one that makes these stories' dream of being told come true.
You, as an author, have the privilege of realizing the story exists in the first place. That must be special, right? There are as many stories out there as there are atoms in the universe, but you, a single person, are allowed to know it, possibly the first to know.
You, as an author, have the privilege of meeting each and every character in the story. Through writing, you learn the depth of each one's personality and behavior, likes and dislikes, hopes and dreams, fears and secrets. You come to know their past, their present, and their future. Perhaps... even know the heart and innermost thoughts of one.
You, as an author, have the privilege of coming to know and appreciate the setting of the story. With the arrival of each year or passing of each second, you are aware of the ticking of the story's clock. With each mountain and valley, each city or farm, every earth and sky and ocean and world and even dimension, you get to experience it as if you were there. The beauty and terror of it. The way it connects to all other aspects of the story. Don't take it for granted.
You, as an author, have the privilege of being an eyewitness to every event, big or small, that occurs in the story. That should be enough of a blessing by itself. If it does not seem so, think about the fact that you, alongside the characters, are the first one to experience the battles. The journeys. The steps forward or backward. The secrets revealed. The interactions of characters. The celebration of new life or the last words of the dying. The plot is yours to see and know.
You, as an author, have the privilege of being swept away by the torrent of emotions in the story. From the very start, your heart will be consumed by feelings. You will feel the icy chill of hate or the deep plummet of sorrow. You will feel the warm rays of joy and goodness. You will be stalked by the shadows of betrayal, and wrapped in the arms of love. And slowly, the heart of the story will become part of your own.
You, as an author, have the privilege of being able to use a plethora of glorious words to form that beautiful thing called a story. Everything else is there - characters, setting, plot, emotion - all that is needed to complete it is words. Rich and precise words work as the bond that holds the rest of the story together. And word by word, sentence by sentence, you will create one of the most treasured things known to man.
When you are given the privilege of becoming an author, the story you write asks you only for these things:
Realizing and knowing the story: Not everyone is an author, but YOU are. A story has "chosen" you to be the one to tell it. Acknowledge this proudly. Do not be ashamed. It is also your chance now to share the greatness of this story with the rest of the world.
Characters: You hold in your hands the characters and their life, fate, and even very existence. Hold them carefully, but open your hands up to let readers come to know and love them too.
Setting: Describe it just as you see it, just as it is revealed to you. Readers must know and appreciate the time and place well to understand how everything in the story fits together, as it moves along and moves around.
Plot: Since you are the witness and recorder of events, you cannot leave anything out. Be warned, however, about not letting small things cover up the main picture. Too many "rabbit trails" can lead you away from the destination. Instead, let them lead back and contribute to the overall plotline.
Emotions: You must make it so your story's heart can become your readers' hearts too, just as it did yours. Emotion is what really makes the story and each aspect of it come alive. Without it, the story is dead.
Words: Choose carefully. The better the specificity of the words to the ideas being conveyed, the better the ideas will be understood.
There is only one thing left to say: yes, the story was already there, and you just have the privilege of writing it for all the world to know and experience. But you have the chance to make it your own. The story gives you permission to do this when it lets you be the author. Let everyone know it is yours.
Perhaps even put yourself into the writing. Share what you know, feel, think, or have experienced with your readers. Dream big. Create. Inspire.
And maybe, just maybe, instead of simply being a story... it will become YOUR story.
Do not underestimate the power you have as an author. You can make dreams come true, for your story, yourself, and your readers. Be that lucky star that is wished upon, for everyone.
Never give up, and,
I wish you the best of luck in writing.
