Hey everyone! I am so excited to be here! Working on the Erin Hunter books is a big part of my job�and it�s incredibly fun. As an editor for the Erin Hunter books, I look at every bit of the process�the initial series ideas, each specific book�s outline, at least two drafts of the manuscript. I weigh in on everything from plot points to dialogue. And yes�as Vicky has said in the past�I am definitely responsible for saving some cats! (For example, I saved Foxleap from an untimely death in Omen of the Stars #4.)

Well, we wanted to create a character that would at first appear to be an enemy, but would turn out to be one of the cats' greatest allies. Badgers are traditionally hostile and vicious toward warriors, so they seemed like a great choice. Vicky also thinks they are very beautiful, with their pointed, white-striped faces and massive shoulders. Where she lives in the south-west of England, there are many, many badgers, and it's not unusual to see one lumbering down the road ahead of her car when she�s driving at night!

This next questions is great, curious about this myself! Daisypool asked: When cats die and go to StarClan, all of their wounds, injuries, and afflictions are healed and repaired right? But in the prologue of Midnight in StarClan, Deadfoot is shown to still be limping from his twisted paw. Why wasn't he healed? And are there other cats with injuries and such who also haven't been healed by StarClan?

Deadfoot was born with a twisted paw, so that�s how he is in StarClan. If he had gotten the paw twisted in an accident or battle, then I believe it would have been healed in StarClan.

Rock and Midnight were mysterious characters throughout their appearances in the stories, but in Omen of the Stars Book Six: The Last Hope, we learned a little more about just how mysterious they really are! We deliberately kept the details vague, but we wanted to create the impression that they were the very first cat and badger ever created, back before time began. They have lived through the years together, gaining wisdom and learning things that other cats and badgers will never even glimpse. Hence Midnight knows what happens to cats when they die, and Rock can see the future of all the Clans. We loved playing with the possibilities of these fantastical creatures, but we must confess that we haven't figured out everything there is to know about them!

hm. interesting. The thing is, Brambleclaw was ALWAYS going to be chosen for this quest. And I think no matter what he was going to have a really hard time getting his Clanmates to truly trust him. He was so strong and so brave the entire time--and he had to face constant scrutiny and suspicion. No matter what he was definitely the right choice for a quest!

Great question! While there must be other mountain lions in the mountains, we wanted to focus on a single monstrous creature as the focus for the Tribe's fears and suspicions. And in terms of being able to communicate, we don�t imagine that different species of cats would necessarily speak the same language. Body language and hunting techniques might be similar, but not the precise translation of speech.

Those cats are sneaky�and really good at blending into their surroundings to evade notice! The cats generally travelled across lands that weren�t heavily populated by twolegs and were always careful about where they set their paws, making sure that they could avoid detection.

Rock and Midnight were mysterious characters throughout their appearances in the stories, but in Omen of the Stars Book Six: The Last Hope, we learned a little more about just how mysterious they really are! We deliberately kept the details vague, but we wanted to create the impression that they were the very first cat and badger ever created, back before time began. They have lived through the years together, gaining wisdom and learning things that other cats and badgers will never even glimpse. Hence Midnight knows what happens to cats when they die, and Rock can see the future of all the Clans. We loved playing with the possibilities of these fantastical creatures, but we must confess that we haven't figured out everything there is to know about them!

Here is an editorial question from Frozensnarl. Please explain yourself, Erica! Being editors, do you have references about the characters such as gender, appearance, etc.? There are quite a few mistakes in the books, especially nowadays concerning character names and appearances.

We do indeed! Not only do we have style sheets where we keep track of characters, we have multiple people proofread every book. Unfortunately, we�re only human, so mistakes do happen.

We thought Bramblepaw would be a fascinating character to focus on because of his connection to Tigerstar. We knew he would have to prove himself to his Clan, and show them that he was his own cat and he wouldn�t automatically follow in his father�s power-hungry steps.

By the time Firetar�s kits were born, he had more than proven himself as a true leader and warrior, so while his background was sometimes mentioned, Leafpool and Squirrelflight never had to face any teasing about it. (And I think if they ever had, Squirrelflight would have set the teasing cat straight!)

I don't think so. Midnight isn't a normal badger, so it makes sense that she can communicate with the cats. But I don't think cats can just learn another species' language...

hm. interesting. The thing is, Brambleclaw was ALWAYS going to be chosen for this quest. And I think no matter what he was going to have a really hard time getting his Clanmates to truly trust him. He was so strong and so brave the entire time--and he had to face constant scrutiny and suspicion. No matter what he was definitely the right choice for a quest!

Great question! While there must be other mountain lions in the mountains, we wanted to focus on a single monstrous creature as the focus for the Tribe's fears and suspicions. And in terms of being able to communicate, we don�t imagine that different species of cats would necessarily speak the same language. Body language and hunting techniques might be similar, but not the precise translation of speech.

Here�s another from Snowswan, this one made me laugh: how did the two-legs not notice a group of like 6-7 cats traveling across the country and how did they not notice when the entire 4 clans came through?

Those cats are sneaky�and really good at blending into their surroundings to evade notice! The cats generally travelled across lands that weren�t heavily populated by twolegs and were always careful about where they set their paws, making sure that they could avoid detection.
