I get that the Clans were probably more strict about the warrior code, but still. Mapleshade was a queen back then who needed support so she can take care of her babies. Why was she exiled along with three defenseless kits? It just seemed really, really cruel to exile kits along with their mother. Exile the mother, at least, but don't exile the kits.

The kits were banished because of the Omen. And even if only Mapleshade was banished Was there even a queen to take care of the kits?

I know there was an omen, but even then, why did StarClan get involved with someone's mistake? Leafpool, Bluestar & Yellowfang all had kits and broke the rules and I don't see glittering cats getting involved with their secrets.
The book was too short to tell that there were any queens around. This is why I think Mapleshade's Vengeance should have had a Super Edition, written by Kate.
Also, I noticed you're more active on here than the original forums. Are you enjoying it here?

I don't get it either. And if the Clan was going to exile Mapleshade, why exile her kits with her? I don't remember if the book ever stated how old they were, but I assume they were at least a month or so old. That's old enough for them to be eating solid food. They wouldn't have needed to rely on Mapleshade at that point so they could have stayed in ThunderClan with someone watching them.

I really think it largely had to do with no one standing up for her. We don't see any of her family's reactions to it. We don't even know if she had any living family at the time. I think a littermate would have stood up for her and possibly her parents. This is why I too think this should have been an SE that started from when she was young. That way we could have seen her before the drama started. We would also meet her family.

Perhaps those kits were destined to destroy the clans or something like that. Or maybe omen was just misinterpreted and meant something completely different. Maybe it was foreshadowing what Mapleshade will become if the kits die. Yellowfang got involved with Leafpool's kits my manipulating Squirrelflight to lie. It wasn't the same thing as an omen, but it was involvement nonetheless. Maybe StarClan learned form this not to get involved with these things and stopped sending omens after Mapleshade.
I also believe that MV should have been a Super Edition and that the omen was explained better.

I feel that StarClan was trying to get the kits to where they knew they could be great..I believe they saw one destiny where if everything had gone right they would have been great RiverClan warriors. However StarClan didn't forsee everything like what could go wrong if things didn't happen exactly the way they needed to happen. And that's why the kits died.

Well you see, Aqua, it was done to make her backstory seem tragic. A mother with kits is banished due to 'love' and a intangible omen, which is meant to garner sympathy with the readers. You probably read this same premise from a fixfic in the Warriors tag.
So basically, it was done to garner sympathy. I mean, she DID break the warrior code, and is subject to punishment how the leader sees fit. But appealing emotionally, it is morally wrong of Oakstar. Also, it breaks the rule of never abandoning kits in need so...yay?
