I think he's an interesting cat and I've been giving him a lot of thought. When it comes to his relationship with his family and Dappletail.
I actually changed my mind about whether he loved Moonflower or not. I said that I felt like it a pairing made out of duty. After reading Goosefeather's Curse I actually changed my mind and decided that I think he did love her and his kits.
I do however feel like he might have had kits out of duty.
Stormtail we've heard all throughout the book was a well respected warrior in ThunderClan. It would make since for such a cat to give the Clan some kits. I bet Stormtail knew that, and I think Moonflower really wanted them to have kits, which is why he chose to have kits with Moonflower, but I don't think he wanted any, at first he was okay; But when they were born he realized that he was in no way ready to be a father (or even that he couldn't wrap his mind around the idea of being a father) he became distant to Moonflower and his kits. I believe Dappletail became his closet friend in the Clan. I believe that their relationship was a strong platonic relationship. A platonic relationship can be as strong as romantic relationship. It is also not uncommon for people to confuse a platonic relationship for a romantic relationship.
After Moonflower died we don't really see if he knew she was dead or not or how he dealt with her death so we can't really say what he must have felt. It's true he could have been indifferent to her death or he could have been holding in his grief for her and grieved in solitude away from everyone. It's unclear, but it does seem that he did care for her, Because during Bluefur and Snowfur's warrior ceremony he seemed to be trying to tell Moonflower their warrior names, since he was staring directly up at the sky as he shouted their names.
But the one thing that is shown is that despite the awkwardness he felt towards his kits in the beginning, he gradually grows out of it and has pride in his kits.
Stormtail wasn't all that bad with his kits either. He showed pride in Bluepaw when he heard that she had injured Goldenpaw/flower in a practice fight. When Snowfur died he comforted Bluefur and even defended her from Thistleclaw, when Thistleclaw was blaming Bluefur for Snowfur's death. He wasn't the best father or mate but still he wasn't bad by any means and even Bluefur/star mentioned having pride in her father even when she was a warrior when he was called to lead an important patrol.
