I once tried to use Pencil 2D some years back. I had no idea how it works and I still don't since I haven't used it in forever (or really ever).

You should give Krita a try instead. It's a pretty good program, and it has a timeline so you can animate in it. krita.org/en/ Take a look. It's technically better than Pencil 2D. Pencil is a very barebones program and doesn't really give many options. Krita on the other hand is a full digital painting program and has a lot of tools that can assist with animation - especially when it comes to clean up.
