just a bit of practice to get me back into shape.
characters:
heatherfoot: brown-and-white tabby tom. medicine cat.
juniperheart: dark gray she-cat. warrior.
in which a medicine cat leads a warrior on a mysterious mission beyond the borders of their territory.
.
.
.
"Are you sure about this?"
"Well, of course. Would I lead you into a situation I wasn't certain was safe?"
"I'm not sure you want me to answer that."
"Nonsense. I'm not the least bit worried for your safety, Juniperheart."
"Frankly, Heatherfoot, it's your safety I'm worried about."
"Whatever for?"
"Oh, just... never mind. Just keep going, this place is giving me a bad feeling in my gut."
"You know, your namesake would be good for that, you know."
"Muh?"
"Juniper berries. Good for stomachaches."
"Thanks for that, er, wonderful medicine cat fact, Heatherfoot. I'll be sure to remember that."
"You may think me daft, Juniperheart, but I do know sarcasm when I hear it."
"Me? Think you daft? Whatever made you think that?"
"Please, Juniperheart, I'm not stupid. Honestly."
"If you say so."
"...Hush, please. I think I hear something."
"Probably my stomach."
"Juniperheart, I'm serious. Listen. ...Do you hear that?"
"Uh... no...?"
"...Hm."
"Heatherfoot?"
"Follow me. And be quiet, please."
"...Alright."
"..."
"..."
"..."
"...Um, Heatherfoot?"
"...I said quiet."
"I know, I'm sorry, but... I don't hear anything."
"Please, I'm serious. Hush."
"Fine."
"..."
"..."
"..."
"...Wait. What was that?"
"So you do hear it."
"Heatherfoot, where in StarClan are we?"
"I knew it... What do you hear?"
"I... I thought you could hear it before, too."
"Please. Just... tell me."
"Um... a voice. Maybe more than one? I can't tell. It's... Heatherfoot, I think it's speaking to... to me."
"Yes, yes, just... what's it saying?"
"It's saying... It's saying... that you're a mouse-brain. I don't hear a thing."
"Juniperheart! Now is not the time for jokes!"
"Why won't you tell me anything? Why did you bring me here?"
"Your destiny... I had a vision... This place called for me to bring you here."
"Maybe you heard it wrong. My destiny can't be anything special. Really. Look at me."
"Indeed. Look at you."
"Heatherfoot, will you be honest with me? What... what do you see when you look at me?"
"Well, now. Let's see. An honorable warrior, to start with. She's looking for answers. Always felt she was meant for more but that 'more' never arrived. So she settled for the next best thing, but at night she still dreams of who she could have been if she'd only tried harder to pursue her destiny."
"There you go again with destiny."
"But I am right, aren't I?"
"I don't know, maybe. I just... that wasn't really the answer I was looking for."
"I can't read your mind, Juniperheart. Was there something you were hoping to hear?"
"I... Anything. Anything that tells me about myself, because honestly? I don't know who I am. I have no clue! Honorable, you say, but what's that supposed to mean? You make me out to be a dreamer, but I... My dreams are dead, Heatherfoot. They have been for some time. Who am I? Outside of any stupid vision you've had or any generalization you want to dump on me, who am I, Heatherfoot?"
"Simple. You're you."
"Ugh, enough! I never should've listened to you. This was a waste of time."
"Now, don't be hasty. I told you, this place called out for you."
"Well, I don't hear a thing! Just some washed-up old medicine cat who's out of his mind! Will you just give up already? I'm not special. I'm just... waiting for this whole ridiculous charade to be over with already, okay? Get out of my way, I'm going home."
"Juniperheart, wait! I'm-- I'm sorry, I shouldn't have dropped this on you all of a sudden. I made a mistake."
"Right. You did."
"Please, hear me out."
"Now you want to talk? Now you want to actually tell me things that aren't some vague nonsense you pulled out from under your tail? Too late. I'm serious, Heatherfoot. Leave me alone."
"Juniperheart..."
"Don't. Just... don't."
"..."
"See you back at camp, Heatherfoot."
"..."
"..."
"...Well, that was a disaster. StarClan, I must ask... are you sure about this?"
