**SPOILERS FOR HAWKWING'S JOURNEY AND A VISION OF SHADOWS**
PART 1
Pebbleshine looked down at the three kits nestled beside her. The smallest kit wasn't moving. She bent her head down and gently touched it with her nose. The kit didn't move. Pebbleshine rose to her paws, her heart pounding as she gently shook the kit, trying to wake it. When the kit still didn't move, Pebbleshine let out a wail that echoed down the dark tunnel she had made her nest in. She pulled the other two kits closer as she sank back down into the nest. She pushed her nose into the dead kit's fur. “Oh Starclan, why must you take everyone I love away from me?” she murmured. “My family, my mate, and now my kit?” She tried to blink back her tears, but she couldn't stop them from coming. I shall name him Stormkit, after Billystorm. The black and white she-kit will be called Skykit, after my clan, and the gray she-kit who looks like Hawkwing will be called Featherkit. Pebbleshine looked down at her kits. She wasn't able to hunt for herself, and therefore wasn't able to feed her kits well enough. She let out a sigh, then stood up. She picked up the dead kit, Stormkit, and pushed the nest around Skykit and Featherkit. She padded out of the strange dark tunnel and found a soft spot of earth where she could bury Stormkit. When the kit was hidden under the ground, Pebbleshine began to head back to her other kits. She was worried about Skykit and Featherkit; they were only a few days old, and it was almost leaf-bare. Suddenly, Pebbleshine heard something, and she turned to see two full-grown twolegs running toward her with a large stick that had a webbing at the end of it. She froze in terror, crouching down and flattening her ears. The twolegs were only a few tail-lengths away from her when Pebbleshine finally managed to run, but she was too late. The webbed stick was thrown over her. Pebbleshine thrashed around, trying to get free, but the twolegs grabbed her and shoved her into a cage. My kits! What will happen to my kits? Pebbleshine thought, panicked. She clawed at the sides of the cage, but it did nothing. She finally sank down into the back of the cage and cried. “Starclan, please look after my kits.”
When Pebbleshine awoke, she was in a bigger cage, but instead of hard, webbed walls, the cage had hard, slippery, cold walls. Pebbleshine could smell other cats, as well as dogs. And the scent of twolegs was overpowering. “Help!” Pebbleshine cried, putting her paws up against the one cage wall that was web-like. “It's no use,” a voice came from below her cage. “You'll never escape from that cage.” Pebbleshine stopped. “But I have to get back to my kits! They'll die!” “They're already dead,” the cat stated, his voice flat. “You've been asleep here for several hours, and who knows how long it took for you to get here from where you were.” “But-, but-,” Pebbleshine stuttered. “Ignore him,” came another voice, this time from beside Pebbleshine's cage. “He's heartless. Maybe your mate it taking care of your kits.” “No,” Pebbleshine choked back a sob. “I was captured by twolegs and taken away from my mate. Then I escaped, had my kits, and then got caught again by twolegs. My kits have no one to look after them but me.” “I'm so sorry,” the she-cat meowed. “Maybe someone will find them.” “I doubt it,” Pebbleshine sighed. Pebbleshine laid down in the back of the cage and closed her eyes, trying to shut out the painful memories of her clan and family. “Starclan, please take care of them...” she murmured. “Starclan?” the she-cat asked suddenly. “Did you say Starclan?” Pebbleshine lifted her head. “Yes, I did,” she answered. “What is your name?” the cat asked, and Pebbleshine suddenly realized the voice sounded familiar. “Pebbleshine,” she replied. “Pebbleshine? It's me! Curlypaw!” Pebbleshine leaped to her paws. “Curlypaw?” she gasped. “You're alive! I can't believe it! And- and you had your kits! Hawkwing was devastated when you disappeared, he wouldn't eat for days!” Curlypaw's words came out so quickly, Pebbleshine could barely understand them. “Hawkwing's doing okay, other than that, though?” Pebbleshine asked breathlessly. “Yes, but he misses you so much,” Curlypaw expalined. Pebbleshine tilted her head to one side. “Wait, how did you get here?” Curlypaw was silent for a long moment. “I left the clan. I became a kittypet with Parsleyseed-” “He did what?” Pebbleshine gasped, completely shocked that her brother would do such an awful thing. “My brother is a kittypet?” “Yeah,” Curlypaw said slowly. “Anyway, his twolegs were supposed to take me to live with them, but instead, they took me here. The other cats here say this is called an animal shelter. It's where pets go to find new housefolk.” “We need to escape and find Skyclan again,” Pebbleshine stated. “Yeah. I regret abandoning them. They're our family. Let's escape, find your kits, and then the clan,” Curlypaw decided. “But how?” Pebbleshine asked. Curlypaw said nothing, but Pebbleshine could hear her messing with the cage door. After a moment, Pebbleshine saw it swing open. Curlypaw appeared a second later, then began to mess with the lock on Pebbleshine's cage. It opened a few moments later, the cage opened, and Pebbleshine leaped out. It was a long way to the floor, but being a cat, Pebbleshine landed unharmed. “Let's go!” she called to Curlypaw. The she-cats raced toward a window that happened to be propped open a bit. They jumped out of it and looked around. “Recognize any of this?” Curlypaw asked. Pebbleshine scented the air deeply. “My kits were in a tunnel under a thunderpath. Let's find a thunderpath and follow it,” she suggested. “Which way?” Pebbleshine hesitated. “Toward the sunset,” she answered, trying to sound more confident than she was. “Alright,” Curlypaw said, trusting the older she-cat without any hesitation. “I think a thunderpath is this way.” Pebbleshine dashed off, following the scent of twoleg's monsters. Sure enough, there was a thunderpath not too far away. The two she-cats headed toward where the sun was setting. They journeyed for ages until Pebbleshine began to recognize where she was. She began to run until she spotted a tunnel that went under the thunderpath. “Pebbleshine! Wait!” Curlypaw called. “This is it! This is the tunnel!” Pebbleshine yowled back. “Come on!” Pebbleshine skidded to a halt when she reached the tunnel, then she stepped inside. She dashed over to the nest she had built just days ago. It was scattered, and her kits were gone. Pebbleshine collapsed onto the cold ground. “No... no... Starclan, no...” she sobbed. “Pebbleshine?” Curlypaw's voice echoed down the tunnel. “Are they there? Are they alive?” “They- they're gone,” Pebbleshine murmured. “They're gone.” “Then someone found them!” Curlypaw meowed brightly. “If they died, they would be here. But they're not! Someone found them and has them! Pebbleshine, your kits are alive!” Pebbleshine looked up. “But I may never find them again,” she whispered. “I can smell other cats, and they've been here recently. They're not kittypets; they're wild! Maybe a Skyclan cat found them, or maybe the other clans live nearby and found them!” “Curlypaw, I envy your faith,” Pebbleshine muttered. Curlypaw sat down beside Pebbleshine and placed her paw on her shoulder. “You need to have faith too, or you'll never find your kits, or Hawkwing, ever again!” Pebbleshine looked up. “I know I'll find Hawkwing, but I will never find my kits. They've been taken, and who knows where they are. Let's go look for the clans.” “But-” “Curlypaw,” Pebbleshine began. “Maybe you're right; maybe Skyclan was here and found them.” “Alright,” Curlypaw sighed. “But if we find the clans and your kits aren't there, I'm coming back to find them.” “And I will gladly go with you,” Pebbleshine meowed. Curlypaw smiled weakly. Well, let's go then.”
Several moons later, Pebbleshine and Curlypaw found a lake surrounded by forests and fields. They stood on top of a hill at the edge of the territory. Pebbleshine breathed in deeply, letting the scent of other cats wash over her. “I think I can see cats down there,” Curlypaw breathed, spotting four cats walking along the shore of the lake. “Well then, let's go!” Pebbleshine called, racing down the hill towards the moor. “I hope Skyclan is here,” Curlypaw said. “I do too,” Pebbleshine replied. “But I know the other four clans are here.” “Who are you?” The two she-cats skidded to a halt and spun around toward the voice. Standing in front of them were three large toms who smelled of heather and rabbit. “We are Pebbleshine and Curlypaw of Skyclan, and you are?”

PART 2
“Skyclan?” the black tom echoed. “What in Starclan's name is Skyclan?” Pebbleshine and Curlypaw exchanged a glance. Skyclan hadn't found the other clans yet. But at least the two she-cats had. “I assume you are Windclan?” Curlypaw asked. The black tom nodded. “Yes, I am Crowfeather.” “We are looking for Firestar,” Pebbleshine announced. “And the rest of our clan.” “Firestar lost his last life many moons ago,” Crowfeather explained. “Bramblestar is the new leader of Thunderclan. Anyway, how do you know who Firestar is?” “Many, many, many moons ago, Firestar was spoken to by Starclan. They told him to go rebuild Skyclan, who had been chased out of the old forest territory by the other clans,” Curlypaw explained breathlessly. “And he did. But now, we have been chased out of our territory by a rouge called Darktail and his friends.” “Darktail?” Crowfeather's eyes widened. “But... But he's here; he took over Shadowclan!” “Can I ask you an odd question?” Pebbleshine asked hesitantly. “As long as I don't have to answer,” Crowfeather replied. Pebbleshine sat down. “Have two kits been taken into one of the clans recently? Two that weren't born by this lake?” Crowfeather tilted his head to one side. “As a matter of fact, yes. Twigpaw and Violetpaw. Are they yours?” Pebbleshine leaped to her paws. “One is a gray tabby, the other is black and white, right?” she gasped. Crowfeather nodded. “Yes, are they yours?” he repeated. “Yes! Oh, my kits! My kits! Please take me to them, where are they?” Pebbleshine gasped. “Twigpaw, the gray tabby, lives in Thunderclan, and the black and white one, Violetpaw, lives in Shadowclan,” Crowfeather explained. “Didn't you say Shadowclan was taken over by Darktail?” Curlypaw asked, her eyes widening. “Yes. I'm afraid your daughter is living with the cat that drove you out of your territory,” Crowfeather replied. “I must go get her! Please!” Pebbleshine meowed frantically. “Which way is that mange-ridden fleabag living?” “Darktail or your kit?” Crowfeather asked, his whiskers twitching with amusement. “Darktail,” Curlypaw answered for the older she-cat. “He tricked us. He helped us, and then one day he turned on us. I was just a kit then, but I still remember him...” “Well, I'll take you to Thunderclan,” Crowfeather said slowly. “Twigpaw is doing well there.” “Oh please, can we go now?” Pebbleshine asked impatiently. “Yes, let's go,” Crowfeather sighed, then began muttering something about Firestar not telling anyone about Skyclan. The three cats made their way to a forest, then began to head deep into it. After a moment, Crowfeather stopped. “I can hear a patrol. Thunderclan! I bring you visitors!” A moment later, four cats appeared out of the undergrowth. There was a dark ginger she-cat, a gray and white tabby she-cat, a gray and white tom, and lastly, a small gray she-cat. “Feath-Twigpaw?” Pebbleshine breathed. The gray she-cat tilted her head to one side. “You know my name?” she asked. Pebbleshine felt as though she might burst with joy. “My kit, oh, my kit,” she gasped, dashing forward and frantically licking Twigpaw's head. Twigpaw took a step back. “Who are you?” she asked. “I am Pebbleshine of Skyclan; your mother.”
PART 3
“My...” Twigpaw trailed off, then suddenly shoved toward Pebbleshine. “My mother!” she gasped. “I missed you so much! I thought you were dead! We need to go to Shadowclan and find Violetpaw, except Darktail probably won't let us – Darktail is an evil tom who took over Shadowclan,” Twigpaw explained, pausing to take a breath. “What is Skyclan? Is it a real clan? I knew I was clanborn!” Pebbleshine didn't know where to begin. She looked up at the other Thunderclan cats. “What are your names? Can you take me to Sandstorm?” “I am Ivypool,” the gray and white tabby said. “And Sandstorm is dead.” “I'm Squirrelflight, and this is Dewnose,” the ginger she-cat explained. “You're from Skyclan?” Curlypaw nodded. “Yes, we are. Do you know what Skyclan is?” Squirrelflight nodded. “Yes, I do. Please come with me back to our camp. Crowfeather, I trust you to leave our territory without an escort?” The black tom nodded and turned back to the moor. The Thunderclan cats led Pebbleshine and Curlypaw to their camp, where they were interrogated by other warriors. “Alderheart!” Twigpaw called. “Come here!” A dark ginger tom stepped out of a den that smelled strongly of herbs, and walked across the clearing toward Twigpaw. “Who are these cats, Twigpaw?” Alderheart asked. “This is Pebbleshine; my mother!” Twigpaw explained. “They're from Skyclan!” Alderheart's eyes widened. “But- but... How? Where's the rest?” he stuttered. “Our clan has been scattered, but there is a group that is trying to find you right now. We were split from them, and have been searching for them for moons,” Curlypaw explained. “I'm Curlypaw, by the way.” “You look like a warrior,” one of the Thunderclan cats said. “I ought to be one by now, but I refuse to let anyone name me, except for Leafstar,” Curlypaw explained. “When they come here, she can give me my full name.” “Greetings, Pebbleshine and Curlypaw. I am Bramblestar; leader of Thunderclan.” “Greetings. We came here hoping to find Firestar; I am sorry that he is gone now,” Pebbleshine murmured, dipping her head in respect. “We all miss him very much. Would you two please come with me to my den? We have a lot to talk about. Squirrelflight, you come too, as well as Jayfeather and Alderheart, of course,” Bramblestar meowed. Pebbleshine followed the tabby leader toward his den, with Curlypaw right beside her. Pebbleshine glanced back at Twigpaw. “We can get to know each other later,” Pebbleshine assured her. “I've missed you so much.” “I missed you too,” Twigpaw murmured. “I'll wait right here for you.” Pebbleshine purred happily and headed into the leader's den. She glanced back once more before putting her full attention on Bramblestar. “So,” the leader began.
After what felt like ages of talking, the six cats exited the den. Twigpaw ran to greet her mother, and the two told each other everything as the sun dropped below the horizon and left the camp covered in darkness. “Twigpaw, you need to sleep now, or you won't be able to focus on your training tomorrow,” Ivypool meowed, walking over to the two. “I won't be able to focus either way,” Twigpaw replied. “My sister is under the rule of the cat who drove my clan out of it's territory, and I just found my mother. I don't think I'll be concentrating on anything but that for days.” Pebbleshine licked the top of her daughter's head. “Go sleep, little one,” she murmured. “I'll see you in the morning.” Twigpaw was reluctant, but eventually padded toward the apprentice's den. When she had disappeared inside, Curlypaw walked over to Pebbleshine. “She looks just like Hawkwing,” she commented. “Yes, she does, doesn't she?” Pebbleshine murmured, her heart aching as she thought about her mate. “He must be devastated and thinking we're all dead.” “No,” Curlypaw countered. “He never gave up hope that you were alive and trying to find him again.” “Really?” Pebbleshine let out a soft purr. Silence filled the camp for several minutes as the two became lost in thought. Finally, Pebbleshine broke the silence. “I miss him so much,” she finally murmured, tears forming in her eyes. “You'll find him again one day; you just have to have faith,” Curlypaw said.

PART 4
The next day, Bramblestar called a clan meeting early in the morning. “I have decided to send out a patrol to try and find the rest of Skyclan. The cats I am sending are Alderheart, Sparkpelt, Pebbleshine, Curlypaw, and Hollytuft,” Bramblestar announced. “What about me?” Twigpaw asked. “My mother's going to find my father; surely I should be there!” Bramblestar sighed. “Very well. Twigpaw shall go with the patrol.” “Bramblestar?” Pebbleshine called out. “Yes?” the dark tabby leader asked. “I would like to have my other kit with me,” Pebbleshine began cautiously. “Please let me go to Shadowclan and get her.” “Not a chance,” Bramblestar replied. “You know how vicious Darktail is; we can't risk a fight.” “My kit is with him!” Pebbleshine argued. “You can't just leave her there!” Bramblestar took a deep breath. “Pebbleshine,” he began calmly. “Violetpaw chose to live there with Darktail as her leader. She won't want to leave willingly.” Pebbleshine swayed on her paws. “My kit wants that mange-ridden fleabag to be her leader?” she echoed. “Surely you're mistaken. How did she get there anyway? Why are she and Twigpaw apart?” Alderheart stepped forward. “Needletail and I found Violetpaw and Twigpaw in a tunnel under a thunderpath. We took them because they were about to die, and we brought them here. Needletail lives in Shadowclan, and she decided that she had a right to keep one of the kits.” Pebbleshine blinked. “Thank you for saving them; twolegs caught me and I was unable to get away for ages, but how could you let this Needletail do that?” “We had no choice,” Bramblestar explained. “Rowanstar was the leader at that point, and Shadowclan wasn't all that bad at that point.” “Where's Rowanstar now?” Pebbleshine asked. “Here,” came a voice from behind her. Pebbleshine turned around to see a ginger tom sitting behind her. “My clan kicked me out, so I am living here now, but I hope to reclaim my clan soon.” Several Thunderclan cats let out snorts of laughter. “Like that's gonna happen anytime soon,” one of them meowed sarcastically. “Pebbleshine; when Skyclan reaches the lake, we will help you fight against Darktail, but for now you have to leave her,” Bramblestar said. “Just go find your clan.” Pebbleshine let out a long sigh. “Alright,” she finally relented. “I will wait, as long as my kit is happy and safe there. If she isn't, though-” “If she were in danger or was unhappy, we would have fought for her moons ago,” Bramblestar interrupted. “Meeting dismissed. The patrol leaves now.” Pebbleshine headed toward the medicine den along with the rest of the cats on the patrol. They lapped up piles of traveling herbs. As Pebbleshine looked around the medicine den, she saw a young brown she-cat in a nest, watching her. “Is that the medicine cat apprentice?” Pebbleshine asked Twigpaw. The gray she-cat shook her head. “No, that's Brairlight. Her legs were crushed by a tree and so she can't move them. She lives in the medicine den because she has to take herbs everyday and do exercises all the time.” Pebbleshine frowned. “Poor thing,” she whispered. “I want to be the medicine cat apprentice,” Twigpaw admitted. “But Ivypool's such a good mentor, I don't want to hurt her feelings.” “What you're going to be for the rest of your life is very important. You should talk with Jayfeather and Alderheart about it,” Pebbleshine said. “But, if Skyclan came to the lake, I would go live with them, right?” Twigpaw asked. “Yes.” “Does Skyclan have a medicine cat?” “Echosong,” Pebbleshine answered. Twigpaw thought for a moment. “There's no apprentice?” Pebbleshine shook her head. “There's Fidgetpaw,” she said. “Oh.” “Maybe Starclan just wants me to be a warrior,” Twigpaw meowed finally. Pebbleshine let out a soft purr. “I'm glad Thunderclan has taught you about our ancestors,” she said. “Firestar taught us all about clan life, but that was many moons ago and some things seem to have changed.” Twigpaw looked up at her mother. “What if-” she broke off and looked down at her paws. “What if I don't want to leave Thunderclan when Skyclan reaches the lake?”

PART 5
Pebbleshine stopped and looked down at her kit. “I lost you once before, I don't ever want to lose you again. Please come with me to our clan,” she begged. “We'll bring Violetpaw with us and we'll all be together again.” “What's my father like?” Twigpaw asked suddenly. “Hawkwing is strong, brave, and determined,” Pebbleshine answered. “And you look just like him.” Twigpaw purred happily. “I can't wait to meet him,” she meowed quietly. “Let's go!” Squirrelflight called from the camp exit. Pebbleshine padded out of the medicine den and toward the ginger she-cat. “Pebbleshine, which way do you think Skyclan is from here?” Alderheart asked, walking up beside her. The she-cat thought for a long moment, looking up at the sky. “That way,” she finally said, pointing with her tail toward the area between Thunderclan and Windclan. Squirrelflight looked back at Pebbleshine. “Well, let's get moving!” she exclaimed impatiently. The patrol headed out without another word, heading to where Pebbleshine had pointed. She hoped she had been right about where Skyclan would be. Bramblestar told her they had already searched for Skyclan twice, and Pebbleshine didn't want them to fail a third time. “About how many cats are there in your clan?” Sparkpelt asked. “Will they be easy to find?” Pebbleshine shrugged. “Not many; most of our daylight warriors stayed with their housefolk-” “Daylight warriors?” Hollytuft echoed. “Housefolk?” “During the day, they're warriors, but at night, they're kittypets. It's weird, but they made our clan strong,” Curlypaw explained. “As Pebbleshine said, most of them left us.” “And before we left our territory, several died fighting against Darktail. Then, during our journey many more died. There may only be a few cats left, though, Plumwillow was expecting kits last I saw,” Pebbleshine finished. “So there's probably not very many cats left.” Curlypaw lowered her head. “I just hope our clan still exists,” she whispered. “So do I,” Pebbleshine agreed. “But if there's one thing I've learned from all the trials we've been through, it's that Skyclan will always live on.” Twigpaw pressed close to her mother. “I can't wait to meet my clanmates.” Alderheart glanced back at the young cat, a look of sadness swept over his face for a second, but he turned back and remained silent. “Hawkwing will be so happy,” Curlypaw purred. “He was devastated about losing Pebbleshine, but loosing his kits as well made it so hard for him. He never gave up on you, though. He waited for you for three days before the rest of the clan forced him to leave.” Twigpaw frowned. “I hope I'm everything he hoped I would be,” she whispered. “You are that, and more,” Pebbleshine assured her. When they finally reached the edge of Thunderclan territory, Pebbleshine scented the air deeply. It was likely no cat had been here before; it could have all sorts of dangers. She remained silent, keeping her ears pricked to pick up any sound that could be an enemy lurking in the shadows. “My clan was looking for a lake; Starclan showed our medicine cat a lake in her dreams, so we were trying to find it. Are there any lakes around here?” Pebbleshine asked. “Actually, we found a lake,” Curlypaw explained. “That was where the clan was, last time I saw them. It was an awful lake though; too many dogs, twolegs, and fierce birds.” Pebbleshine sent her a questioning glance about the fierce birds, but said nothing and instead turned her attention to Squirrelflight, we was thinking about an answer to the question. “No, there are no lakes,” the ginger she-cat finally said. “I don't remember there to be any, at least.” “Well, we'll keep going until we find one,” Curlypaw decided. “Who said you get to make the decisions for this patrol?” Sparkpelt hissed. Alderheart flicked his tail. Calm down,” he warned his sister. “I am not going to calm down; this apprentice is trying to make decisions that could ruin the journey!” Sparkpelt exclaimed. “Sparkpelt,” Squirrelflight began. “Curlypaw is right; we have to keep going until we find a lake, then look for any traces of where they went next. Since there were lots of dogs and twolegs there, I doubt Skyclan stayed there for long.” Pebbleshine nodded. “That sounds like a good idea,” she meowed. As the continued to walk, Pebbleshine couldn't help but feel like they were going the wrong way. “Hang on. Squirrelflight, were you there when the clans left their old territory?” The ginger she-cat nodded. “Yes, I was.” “And do you remember which way you came from?” Pebbleshine pressed. “Yes, I do,” came the slow reply. “We need to go that way,” Pebbleshine stated. “The forest territory is fairly close to where Skyclan used to live, and Skyclan was coming this way from there.” “We're not off by very far,” Alderheart commented. “We just need to go this way a bit more.” The young tom turned in the direction of the moor. “There.” The other journeying cats followed him, not saying anything else. Pebbleshine thought about Hawkwing and Violetpaw the entire time, until Twigpaw interrupted her mother's daydreaming. “Pebbleshine,” she began. “Who are the other cats in your clan?” “Well, Leafstar is our leader's name. Her deputy is...” Pebbleshine stopped and looked over at Curlypaw. “Hawkwing's the deputy. Did I not tell you that?” Curlypaw asked. Pebbleshine broke out in a purr. “I knew he'd be deputy one day,” she smiled. “Anyway, then there's our medicine cat, Echosong, and her apprentice, Fidgetpaw. Then there's Plumwillow, Firefern, Rileypool...” She broke off, pain gripping her heart as she thought about her clanmates. Curlypaw came to walk beside the older she-cat, sensing her sadness. “We'll find them,” she whispered. “I know we will.” “I hope so,” Pebbleshine replied, her voice so quiet she wondered if Curlypaw had even heard her. “Tell me more about Echosong,” Twigpaw pressed. “Well, she's the best medicine cat ever,” Pebbleshine began, then stopped. “Well, she's the first medicine cat Skyclan has ever had, so I may be biased. Anyway, she's very gentle and kind, but when it comes to injured cats not wanting to be treated, she becomes as fierce as a warrior.” Twigpaw let out a laugh. “I can't wait to meet her,” she grinned. “I can't wait to meet everyone, really. I can't wait to feel like I really belong somewhere.” Pebbleshine purred. “You belong wherever you want to belong,” she said. “If you want to live in Skyclan, you belong there. If you want to live in Thunderclan, then you belong there.” “Then, do you believe that Violetpaw belongs in Shadowclan?” Hollytuft asked. Pebbleshine hesitated. “Yes. I do believe she belongs there; it's Darktail that doesn't.” “Well said,” Squirrelflight murmured from the front of the patrol. “But you want her to be with you,” Twigpaw countered. Pebbleshine nodded. “I do, and I hope that when she learns about me she will want to be will me as well, and then therefore belong in Skyclan.” Twigpaw tilted her head to one side, thinking about it for a long while. “So, what about your daylight warriors? Where do you think they belong?” she finally asked. Pebbleshine let out a small chuckle. “They showed where they belonged when they chose to stay with their twolegs rather than come with the rest of the clan,” she answered. No one else knew what to say, so they journeyed on in silence for the rest of the day. When the sun began to fall below the horizon, Squirrelflight searched out a place to spend the night, and then sent Hollytuft and Sparkpelt to hunt. When the two young cats had come back, they each were carrying a large rabbit. “The one good thing about moors; they have lots of fat rabbits,” Sparkpelt meowed, her voice muffled by the rabbit's fur. “The forest ends nearby?” Alderheart asked curiously. Hollytuft nodded. “Yeah, just over there.” She pointed with her tail to where Pebbleshine could just barely see the golden fields through the trees. “Great; we still know where we are,” Squirrelflight sighed, relieved. “I was hoping we wouldn't get lost on the first day of the journey.” The next day, the patrol woke up early and headed toward where Squirrelflight said the clans had come from. When they finally reached the top of the last hill of the moor, they looked out across all the land they could see. “It's so big,” Twigpaw breathed. “The world must go on forever,” Curlypaw meowed. “No one knows for sure,” Squirrelflight shrugged. “But it might.” Hollytuft ruffled her fur. “It's cold up here. Let's keep moving,” she said. Sparkpelt nodded in agreement. “Yeah.” And so the seven cats continued on to find the lost clan. They journeyed on for ages, until Alderheart decided that they should rest for a while. Pebbleshine and Curlypaw decided to hunt for the rest of the patrol, and they came back with a rabbit and a squirrel. “Where'd you find a squirrel? We're ages away from the forest,” Twigpaw asked. Curlypaw shrugged. “It was in the moor.” “Is that a sign?” Twigpaw looked over at Alderheart, who shrugged. “I don't think so,” the medicine cat meowed cautiously. “Maybe Squirrelflight isn't supposed to come on this mission,” he teased. Squirrelflight chuckled. “Trust me; I belong on this mission. But maybe I'm wrong about where the Great Journey ended...” “Well, I know I was wrong about which direction Skyclan might be; the way we were going felt wrong,” Pebbleshine meowed. “Maybe you're both wrong. Maybe it's right between the two places,” Sparkpelt suggested. “Maybe,” Hollytuft murmured. “If we started just a little bit off, we would end up way off... That could be what it means.” Alderheart sighed. “I was joking about it meaning something about Squirrelflight being in the wrong place; the squirrel means nothing. The poor thing just got lost.” Twigpaw nodded. “He's probably right,” she told her mother. “He's always right.” Alderheart licked his chest fur, embarrassed. “I'm not always right,” he corrected. “I messed up the two other journeys, and I've given plenty of cats the wrong herbs.” Twigpaw smiled. “I think you're always right; don't ruin my opinion of you.” Alderheart purred and licked Twigpaw's ear. “Alright, then,” he laughed. “I'll let you pretend that I'm like Starclan; that I'm all-knowing and all-powerful.” “But you are,” Twigpaw meowed, trying to sound like an innocent kit. She could hardly contain her giggles, and finally broke out laughing. Pebbleshine purred softly. Alderheart had practically raised Twigpaw, and they obviously loved each other very much – love as in a family kind of love. “Twigpaw,” Pebbleshine began, and her daughter padded over. “Yes?” Pebbleshine hesitated. “If you... If you are happy in Thunderclan-” “I'm staying with you. I have no Thunderclan blood in my whatsoever; I belong in Skyclan. But, I want to ask Bramblestar to change part of the Warrior code...” Twigpaw stopped, looking embarrassed. “I want to be able to have friends in other clans.” Pebbleshine purred. “What if there was a fight, though? What if Thunderclan attacked Shadowclan? Would you attack Violetpaw's friends?” “If they were bad friends,” Twigpaw answered. “Shadowclan are cats; just like us. They may have a bad leader, and a few misguided apprentices, but there are good cats there. Would you hurt them?” Pebbleshine asked again. “Well, no,” Twigpaw began. “Because medicine cats don't fight.” Alderheart tilted his head to one side. “What?” Twigpaw looked over at Alderheart. “I want to be a medicine cat. I've decided that's what I want to be, and I will be one.” “It's not that easy-” Pebbleshine began, but Alderheart stopped her with a small shake of his head. “We will see what the future holds,” Alderheart replied to Twigpaw. “If Starclan wants you to be a medicine cat; you will be one.”

FINAL PART (5)
Two days later, the journeying cats climbed to the top of a hill, and looking down, saw a huge lake that stretched out before them. “This is it!” Curlypaw exclaimed. “This is the lake I told you about!” “Great!” Squirrelflight purred. “Now we need to see if they're still here, or if there are any scents left that we can follow.” Hollytuft scented the air. “I can't smell any other cats,” she whispered. “We were living on that side of the lake,” Curlypaw said, pointing with her tail to the opposite side. “Oh.” “Let's go!” Pebbleshine exclaimed impatiently, her heart was pounding at the thought of being reunited with her family – or whatever was left of it. Twigpaw said nothing, but Pebbleshine knew she was excited as well. “Come on,” Alderheart meowed, and with that he began to head down the hill, the rest of the patrol following him. After a few minutes of walking, Curlypaw broke out into a run. “There's a lot of dogs and twolegs and big birds; I suggest we hurry,” she called back. Alderheart nodded and motioned for the rest of the cats to quicken their pace. Pebbleshine raced after Curlypaw, just as eager to get away from the dangers as the younger cat. Pebbleshine glanced back and made sure Twigpaw was okay. She was obviously tired, but she was at least keeping up with the warriors. “This is where we were camped,” Curlypaw explained breathlessly as she slowed down and eventually stopped. “I don't smell any fresh scents,” Pebbleshine sighed. Curlypaw shook her head. “No fresh scents, but there are stale ones. Maybe three days old? It obviously rained recently here, so maybe it's only a day or two old...” “So can I,” Pebbleshine murmured after a long moment. “I smell other cats,” Twigpaw meowed. “I guess that's Skyclan?” Pebbleshine followed the scents of the cats heading the opposite way that they should have been going. “I think they went this way,” Pebbleshine meowed. “I think you're right,” Squirrelflight agreed. “It does smell as if many cats went this way all at the same time.” “Then,” Hollytuft began, still trying to catch her breath. “let's go.” Squirrelflight nodded, and the seven cats walked on, following the scent trail and constantly checking to see if the scents were getting staler or fresher. After following the scents for quite a while, Twigpaw took the lead and pressed her nose to the ground. “I think they turned this way next,” she said hesitantly. Pebbleshine checked the scents. “You're right,” she confirmed. “They turned this way.” Twigpaw purred with happiness of getting it right. “They're still going the wrong way, though,” she pointed out. “We need to catch up with them.” “She's right again; if we just walk and keep taking rests, we'll never catch up. We need to hurry,” Squirrelflight meowed in agreement. The seven cats picked up their pace and continued to follow the trail of faint scents. When the sun began to set once again, they found a sheltered place to spend the night, and sent two cats to go hunting. Pebbleshine let out a long yawn. “I think we should keep going through the night; we'd catch up with them so much faster.” “Yes, but we would be absolutely worn out,” Alderheart stated. “Alderheart, are there any other traveling herbs around here?” Twigpaw asked. “We could eat some of those and go on for a little bit longer.” “Every pawstep we take while they're sleeping will help us catch up faster,” Sparkpelt pointed out. “I agree,” Hollytuft meowed. Pebbleshine and Curlypaw looked hopefully over at Squirrelflight, who exchanged a glance with Alderheart. “It seems we're out voted,” the ginger she-cat sighed. “Only if I can find traveling herbs,” Alderheart said. “In Skyclan, we use burnet and daisy to keep our strength up,” Curlypaw explained to Alderheart. “At least, that's all that I know. Echosong knows more. What do you use?” “Chamomile, ragwort, sorrel, and daisy,” Alderheart replied. Curlypaw thought for a long moment. “I don't really know what many herbs look like, but I'll try my best. Can you describe them?” “Daisy leaves are feather-shaped and have jagged edges. Sorrel had typical rounded leaves, and the plant looks like a bush, sort of. Chamomile looks like dill. Do you know what dill looks like?” Alderheart asked. Curlypaw nodded. “I do too,” Twigpaw meowed. Squirrelflight nodded. “You two look for daisy and chamomile. Pebbleshine and Alderheart will look for sorrel and ragwort.” “What does ragwort look like?” Pebbleshine asked the medicine cat. Alderheart hesitated. “It's hard to explain. You look for sorrel, I'll deal with the ragwort.” Pebbleshine shrugged. “Okay. I'll also look for burnet; I know what it looks like, and there might be some here.” Alderheart glanced over at the Skyclan she-cat, then shrugged and headed off to find the herbs. After a few minutes, Pebbleshine spotted a small patch of burnet. She picked off several stems and carried them back to where the other cats were, looking for sorrel along the way. She didn't see any, but at least she found the burnet. When she reached rest of the patrol, she set the burnet down. “That was fast,” Squirrelflight commented, looking up from washing herself. “What herbs did you get?” “Just burnet; I couldn't find daisy,” Pebbleshine admitted. “That's fine,” Alderheart meowed from behind her, his voice muffled from the bundle of herbs in his mouth. “I found tons of ragwort.” “When will Curlypaw and Twigpaw be back?” Hollytuft asked impatiently. “Whenever they find the herbs, probably,” Sparkpelt answered. Hollytuft flicked her tail and began to lick her paws. “Ugh, I'm not used to traveling this far; my paws hurt.” Alderheart searched the clearing. “Dock would help with that.” “Is there any around here?” Hollytuft asked. “Yeah,” Alderheart meowed after a moment, then he walked over to a plant and grabbed a few leaves. “This place has loads of herbs!” As Alderheart gave the leaves to Hollytuft to rub on her paws, Curlypaw and Twigpaw stepped back into the clearing, both of their mouths were full of herbs. Curlypaw suddenly sneezed, causing the leaves that were in her mouth to flutter around the clearing. “Nice going,” Sparkpelt laughed, her tail curling in amusement. “Sorry!” Curlypaw squeaked, sounding like an apprentice for once. “The smell of the herbs was tickling my nose!” “That happens a lot,” Alderheart informed her. “It's okay; just help me pick them up.” “It Jayfeather were here, you would never hear the end of that!” Twigpaw giggled. Pebbleshine smiled, remembering the blind medicine cat's constant grumpiness. “Luckily, he's not here,” she purred. “Sometimes he's insufferable!” Hollytuft exclaimed. “He is my uncle, but still...” Squirrelflight sat down and looked over her shoulder, looking as if she had been offended because of the conversation. Twigpaw gasped, looking over at the deputy. “Sorry Squirrelflight, we forget you raised him.” Pebbleshine's eyes widened. “Oh!” she breathed. “Not only that, but Jayfeather is your medicine cat,” Squirrelflight said to the Thunderclan cats. “He may annoy you at times, but that doesn't mean you can talk about him like that.” Hollytuft and Twigpaw lowered their heads in shame. “Sorry, Squirrelflight.” “We need to get moving,” Alderheart suddenly said. “We should be either sleeping or catching up with Skyclan, and here we are, talking about things that don't really matter right now.” Pebbleshine nodded, yawning. She readied herself for more traveling, and also prepared herself for the awful taste of the traveling herbs Alderheart had began making. “Here,” Alderheart said, pushing a pile of herbs to each of the cats. Pebbleshine lowered her head and swallowed the foul-tasting herbs. She glanced over at Curlypaw, who purred quietly. “Unlike most cats; I like the sharp taste of herbs,” she explained after seeing Pebbleshine's confused look. “Weird,” Pebbleshine mumbled. She hadn't know that about her clanmate. “Come on!” Sparkpelt exclaimed. “We have to get going!” Alderheart yawned. “I see the traveling herbs have already begun to kick in,” he muttered. Without another word, the seven journeying cats headed out of the clearing in the woods and continued following the scent trail of Skyclan. Pebbleshine ruffled her fur as a cold gust of wind blew past. “Leafbare is coming,” she murmured. “Hopefully we'll find Skyclan before it gets too cold.” “We will,” Twigpaw assured her mother. Pebbleshine purred and looked down at her daughter, but said nothing more. She carried on walking, the traveling herbs just then beginning to take effect. “Let's run,” Sparkpelt suggested. “It will warm us up and help us hurry along.” “Yes, but it will tire us out, and Skyclan is probably sleeping right now. We may even catch up with them tonight,” Squirrelflight pointed out. “Especially if we run,” Sparkpelt grinned. Alderheart shook his head. “No,” he meowed firmly. “We're not going to run. Squirrelflight is right; it will tire us out too much.” Sparkpelt sighed, but obeyed her mother and brother anyway. After a long while of walking, Twigpaw's head snapped up. “The scents; they're getting stronger!” Hollytuft lowered her head and breathed in deeply. “You're right; they're a lot stronger than they were earlier. I think Skyclan may have been here today!” Pebbleshine felt like she could fly. They were so close to finding her lost clan. “Now can we run?” she asked quietly, then felt embarrassed. “I sound like a kit,” she muttered. “You're excited to find your clan again,” Squirrelflight purred. “But Skyclan could have covered a lot of ground since they were here. We can't risk losing a lot of energy, or spraining our paws in the unfamiliar territory.” Pebbleshine nodded. “You're right,” she meowed. Her entire body was aching to break out into a run; and her heart even more than the rest. As they walked on, the scents got stronger and stronger. Finally, Pebbleshine could feel it in her heart; they were just twenty tail-lengths from wherever Skyclan was resting for the night. Not caring what Squirrelflight thought, Pebbleshine broke out into a run. She dashed through the undergrowth, the scent of Skyclan drenching her. “Leafstar! Hawkwing!” she yowled. A familiar gray tom leaped out of the bushes a few tail lengths in front of Pebbleshine, and the she-cat skidded to a halt. Her eyes met the amber gaze of the tom. Both cats stood, frozen, for several moments until another cat stepped out of the shadows. It was Leafstar. Then, without any warning, Pebbleshine launched herself at Hawkwing, knocking him over and purring louder than a monster could growl. “I missed you so, so, so very much,” Hawkwing choked. “I thought you were dead, I thought our kits were dead – wait! Our kits; where are they?” Pebbleshine stood up and turned around toward where the Thunderclan patrol was just then catching up with her. “There,” Pebbleshine breathed. “is one of our kits.” When Twigpaw had finally caught her breath, she slowly raised her head and her gaze met her father's. Hawkwing blinked. “What's your name?” he finally asked. “Twigpaw,” the gray she-cat answered. “Are you Hawkwing?” The Skyclan deputy nodded slowly, and Twigpaw raced across the clearing, her weariness forgotten. She buried her face in her father's fur. “I thought I had no family, but now I have a full one,” she whispered. Hawkwing shot a questioning glance over at Pebbleshine. “After I had our kits, twolegs captured me. Thunderclan found them and took them to the lake. I found Curlypaw, and we journeyed to the lake as well. Twigpaw was living in Thunderclan, but Violetpaw – our other kit – was living in Shadowclan.” Pebbleshine paused. “And... someone else is living there, too.” Hawkwing didn't seem to care. His gaze swept across the Thunderclan cats and rested on Curlypaw. “You... you came back?” he breathed. Curlypaw nodded. “Parsleyseed's twolegs put me 'up for adoption' – that means they were going to give me to other twolegs. That's where I found Pebbleshine, and we decided to try and find Thunderclan to see if you had gotten there.” Hawkwing nodded, then turned back to Pebbleshine. “What were you saying?” “Darktail has taken charge of Shadowclan.” Hawkwing froze, his eyes glowing with hatred. “And... and our other kit is there?” he asked. Pebbleshine nodded. “She does not yet know what Darktail has done to her family and real clan,” she told him. “Welcome back Pebbleshine and Curlypaw,” Leafstar meowed. Curlypaw stepped forward and bowed her head. “Leafstar, I am sorry for abandoning you. If you do not wish to let me back into the clan, just say so and I will leave.” “Nonsense. We need every warrior we can get,” Leafstar stated. Curlypaw looked up, her eyes shining. “Thank you, Leafstar!” she gasped. “Thank you, thank you! I didn't understand what it meant to be a warrior, and how it was better than being a kittypet or loner. Thank you so much!” she rambled. Leafstar flicker her tail. “Go greet your clanmates,” she ordered, though she smiled and her eyes were kind. “I am Squirrelflight; the deputy of Thunderclan,” Squirrelflight meowed, dipping her head in greeting. “It is good to meet you. Is Firestar doing well?” Leafstar asked. Squirrelflight's gaze clouded. “My father died many moons ago,” she explained quietly. “I am sorry about that. But then Echosong's interpretation of the prophecy was right... Where are Firestar's kin?” Leafstar asked next. “I am Firestar's daughter, and these are my kits,” Squirrelflight told the Skyclan leader, sweeping her tail over to Alderheart and Sparkpelt. Leafstar looked at the two young cats. “Then they must be the ones,” she whispered. “What?” Sparkpelt asked, jumping to her paws. “Um, never mind,” Leafstar stuttered. “Are you here to bring me to the lake?” Squirrelflight nodded. “We are,” she meowed. “Then let me wake my clan. We leave at once; if you are well enough to journey farther,” Leafstar added. Hollytuft yawned. “I think we can at least get back to the clearing we were going to sleep at,” she announced. “It could hold an entire clan in it, too.” “Alright. It's decided then,” Alderheart meowed. “I am a medicine cat, Leafstar. Please let me gather some traveling herbs for your clan.” Leafstar nodded. “Yes, you can do that,” she purred. “Echosong could do that,” Curlypaw shrugged. Leafstar's gaze clouded and she bowed her head. “Echosong was taken by an infection, I'm afraid,” she murmured. “But Fidgetsong can help.” “Fidgetkit is now Fidgetsong?” Pebbleshine asked. “Has it really been long enough for her to be a full medicine cat?” Leafstar shrugged. “As Echosong was about to leave us for Starclan, she named Fidgetsong. Starclan has accepted Fidgetsong and walked in her dreams,” she stated. Curlypaw nodded. “Good,” she meowed. “Before we leave, I have a ceremony to perform,” Leafstar said as the rest of the clan gathered around them. “I, Leafstar, leader of Skyclan, call down on my warrior ancestors to look down on this apprentice. Curlypaw has trained hard in the ways of your code, and she has proved herself strong enough to be a warrior by making such a long journey with only one other cat. Curlypaw, do you promise to care for and defend your clan, even at the cost of your life?” Curlypaw nodded confidently. “I do.” “Then from this moment on, Curlypaw, you shall be known as Curlytail. Starclan honors your determination and endurance,” Leafstar finished. The forest exploded with cheering. “Curlytail! Curlytail!” Newly-named Curlytail purred with pride. “Thank you Leafstar,” she whispered. The dappled leader smiled at her, but said nothing as she signaled for the clan to follow her. “Squirrelflight; lead the way.” Alderheart, Twigpaw, and Fidgetsong wove their way through the cats, passing out traveling herbs for the journey. Pebbleshine hung back a moment, watching as her clan walked on. After Twigpaw was done helping the medicine cats, she padded over to her father and walked beside him, looking up and asking him a question. After answering it, Hawkwing looked back at his mate and stopped. Pebbleshine walked over to him, resting her head on his shoulder as they walked. Several days later, Pebbleshine reached the top of the hill and looked out across the lake that was surrounded by forests and moor. She purred loudly and pressed herself against Hawkwing. “Welcome home,” she whispered. She gazed around her clan. Many of the cats she had known so many moos ago were now gone, having either died or left the clan. My clan will survive, though. They will live at the lake with the other four clans, then help with overthrowing Darktail. After that, Hawkwing and I will persuade Violetpaw to leave Shadowclan to be with us, and my family will finally be together. We will endure anything that comes our way. We are Skyclan, and we are strong. I am Pebbleshine, and this is not the end of my story. It is, however, the end of my journey.

I'm not sure if we ever talked to each other. I just remember seeing you reply to some of the same topics I replied to, and maybe a few roleplays.

Your writing is really good (though I'm trying not to read it so fast since I haven't finished Hawkwing's Journey yet). Can't wait to see more!

This is amazing! I've been wondering since the release of HJ what happened to Pebbleshine, and this fic kind of gives me an answer (at least, until Shattered Sky is released). It was a fun read and fitted in very well with the tone of the actual Warriors books.
