Want to write but don't know what to do? Want to participate in something but don't have the time to invest in a whole story contest?
eyo. I haven't been around in a while and so why not come and drop off an idea for a little challenge thing I've decided I want to try. The point of this challenge isn't to write the best writing you've ever written, it's just to get ideas and just. . . write in a stress-free way. Because of this, the 'rules' aren't anything strict at all, it's more just something --again-- to get you thinking and writing.
It's easy to start, and easy to do. All you need is something that can playlist or shuffle, and something to write with. As you write, try to capture the feel of the song in the writing. This can be done with mood, using a similar plot to the song, or even embedding lyrics into the song. When the song is over, shift the writing to suit the new song, and keep going until you're either out of ideas or out of songs!
If you're a slow typer, or you have a great idea that you just can't move to a new song, feel free to put it on loop.
If you don't think a song will fit what you have or can't think of an idea for it, skip it! Though it could be a challenge to do many different styles of song in one piece.
-------
My little example:
Welcome to the Jungle - Guns 'N Roses
I darted between the trees, my knuckles white as I gripped the knife tighter. Blood dripped into my eyes from a gash on my forehead, but it was more irritating than painful. I swore as I almost tripped in the dark, and paused to catch my breath; the bark of the oak was soothing to my sweaty back.
"You can't hide forever," the voice called from behind me. Or at least I hoped it was behind me. I held my breath, even when my lungs screamed for air. Can't see me can't hear me can't know can't. . . "You're a stranger here, you'll never escape. I know this forest better than I know myself." Were they closer? I didn't think it was closer. They couldn't have caught up that fast, right?
Stairway to Heaven - Led Zeppelin
I felt a brush against my arm and when I looked down the knife was gone. "Kids shouldn't be playing with knives, they could get hurt." I pushed away from the tree, spinning on my heel, but she was already gone. Close, but gone.
Hotel California - Eagles
The trees rustled in the wind, and I fought to keep my eyes open under a sudden drowsiness. There she stood, draped in dim light, the knife gleaming at her hip. If only I could grab it, I may just be able to get away. "No you can't." I blinked, but the world was still fuzzy, as if clouded in smoke. The tension drained from my arms. I fought to fight, I struggled against my own mind, but the mist was heavy over my eyes, and slowly, surely, my resolve fell away.
"Good, good," she hummed, catching my shoulders before I could slump to the ground. I felt her wipe my forehead and bind the slice that I hardly noticed on my upper arm. Her fingers were light, distant. It was my body, but it wasn't mine, not really. Not to control.
She lead me forward. I knew she was holding my hand, her fingers entwined with mine, but I couldn't feel more than a slight tingle from the contact. Muffled.
Paint it Black - Rolling Stones
I could turn my head now, but the trees were drab, colorless, meaningless. My thoughts fled before me, and some sort of desperation caused me to chase after the threads and try and tie them together, but I didn't know why. I just knew it was important. I was missing something, something very important. I was supposed to do something?
Run? Hide? Escape?
Each thought felt right, but I didn't understand. I stopped, confused. She looked back, tipped her head, and smiled.
One - Metallica
I let out a breath and walked again. Why would I run? I was finally safe.
Safe from the darkness.
