It was September 12th, 2014. That was the day that the first alien ship touched down on a divided Earth. Maybe we could have offered them peace- but what they wanted was war. By the time we realized what was happening, it was too late. The second battleship touched down. The third followed shortly after, and then another, and another- we only had one hope.
XCOM.
An international fighting force composed of every country's top scientists, engineers, and most importantly of all, soldiers. It was the perfect solution to the alien threat. Paired with the military might of the world backing them, this elite unit would spearhead the efforts against the alien menace and save the world. At least, it would have, if the world's countries had managed to put aside their petty differences for one minute. Instead, the plan never fully came to fruition and XCOM was destroyed, all members presumed KIA in a brutal attack that left the UN reeling.
Robbed of their chance to protect the planet, each country fought alone and eventually fell to the alien conquerors. All of the might of human technology was not enough. They came at us with technologies we could only dream of: Plasma weaponry, powered armor, force fields, and psionic energy that could control minds or kill you with a mere thought. And in a little less than six months the last human government surrendered. March 2nd, 2015. That was twenty years ago to the day.
In the absence of human rule, the aliens instituted a new organization to govern the planet, one that would become known as ADVENT. This new government is a puppet to the alien rulers, mysterious beings known as Etherials. ADVENT is made up of alien supporters and weak government leaders who now serve the aliens' every whim and enforce their will on the human population.
Some might say the past twenty years have been a time of peace and prosperity never seen before on this planet. The whole world under one banner- no war, no conflict... Under the rule of ADVENT, great Cities were constructed, pinnacles of wealth and technology. ADVENT has granted the world safe and clean energy, advanced robots, gene therapy, advanced medicine, and cybernetic enhancements. To most people inside the Cities, life under ADVENT isn't so bad- no one goes hungry, all needs are provided for, work is easy and rewarding, and the average lifespan has nearly doubled... but these innovations come at a price. Personal freedoms are non-existent. Do something ADVENT doesn't like, and you might just disappear forever without a trace. They monitor you twenty-four/seven, they listen to your conversations, they subtly brainwash and compel the population to follow their will. The aliens, meanwhile, disappear from the public eye- but you can bet they lurk in the shadows and pull the strings, biding their time, waiting...
ADVENT never reveals the darker side of their organization, but we in the Resistance know. We know about the disappearances, the subterfuge, the scheming. We may not know what they're planning yet, but we can assure you it isn't good for humanity. We all have our reasons for fighting. Some of us might be deserters, disillusioned by our tenures at ADVENT. Others may be veterans, remembering a time when evil monstrosities ripped our friends and our families apart. Some of us are born into this fight. Others join us from all walks of life.
Yet more of us have been here from the very beginning. They thought they killed us. They destroyed our bases, kidnapped our people, took our weapons and our equipment. But they couldn't take our spirit. We are born anew, rising from the ashes of our past like a burning phoenix, XCOM has returned. We are weak and we are few. We have almost nothing but dusty old weapons and broken machinery, old soldiers and green rookies. We are up against an impossible threat. ADVENT has advanced weaponry, armor, and the full support of the alien military. The stakes now are even higher than they were in the first war. Our only advantage is a stolen and repurposed alien cargo ship that we call the Avenger, but it has no weapons and functions only as a mobile command center. But we are planning something big, an event no alien or brainwashed citizen can ignore. When it happens, no member of the Resistance will ignore the call. No ADVENT trooper will be able to ignore us. The revolution is about to begin, and everyone must decide where they belong: our side... or theirs.

Rules and Roleplay Guidelines “𝔚𝔢 𝔥𝔞𝔳𝔢 𝔦𝔱 𝔦𝔫 𝔬𝔲𝔯 𝔭𝔬𝔴𝔢𝔯 𝔱𝔬 𝔟𝔢𝔤𝔦𝔫 𝔱𝔥𝔢 𝔴𝔬𝔯𝔩𝔡 𝔬𝔳𝔢𝔯 𝔞𝔤𝔞𝔦𝔫.” ― 𝔗𝔥𝔬𝔪𝔞𝔰 𝔓𝔞𝔦𝔫𝔢Author's Note: So you've read this far. Congratulations, you've suffered through my super long intro and hopefully absorbed some of what this roleplay is about. However, I'd like to take the time to lay out some important info about the in-game lore as well as where I deviate from canon (for those of you who play the game and care about that nonsense), and also to set some rules for the roleplay. You know how it goes.
First, the basic set-up of this roleplay. There will be two factions, four if you count the Resistance and XCOM as separate and ADVENT and the aliens as separate. Each faction will have a leader, a second in command, and two other high-ranking officials. After those spots there are some spots for soldiers of the faction. The soldiers will be divided into teams of four to six according to each soldier's abilities. Each plot mission will be assigned to a team, or in some cases more than one team. Between each mission the teams basically just hang out at base, healing their wounds and preparing for the next battle. Some missions will be one team from one faction against a team from another, while others will be one team versus npcs of another faction. Npcs are characters that are temporary and can be roleplayed by anyone, for instance a random ADVENT grunt may be roleplayed by someone as an enemy for a mission.
The missions will differ in objective and locale. Both factions have the capability to drop soldiers anywhere in the world at a moment's notice, XCOM with the Avenger and ADVENT with their troop transports. In this way our characters can fight anywhere they need to. XCOM and the Resistance's teams are just groups of rebel fighters, while ADVENT and the aliens' teams will be a counter-terrorism unit to explain their open-ended role.
There is a plot for this roleplay, but I purposefully left it somewhat vague and flexible so that anyone can suggest missions if they'd like to. XCOM's missions will mainly be guerilla operations- ambush a supply convoy, steal important documents, assassinate an ADVENT official, stuff like that. ADVENT's missions will be somewhat different- hunt down and destroy Resistance cells, guard important officials, attack a Resistance outpost, guard a facility. These are all examples of what kinds of missions your faction will be getting. Story missions will usually be larger than side missions, with multiple teams from both sides in play and more specific objectives.
In regards to injuries and deaths, the more of it the better. The overall theme of this roleplay is fighting against impossible odds and giving up everything to fight for what you believe in. It wouldn't make sense for no one to ever get injured or die. Both sides will fail some missions. Victory is not a certainty for either faction. Also note that the nature of this roleplay means that one side will eventually lose- whether it's XCOM or the aliens is up to you.“𝔚𝔢 𝔞𝔯𝔢 𝔰𝔬𝔯𝔯𝑦 𝔣𝔬𝔯 𝔱𝔥𝔢 𝔦𝔫𝔠𝔬𝔫𝔳𝔢𝔫𝔦𝔢𝔫𝔠𝔢, 𝔟𝔲𝔱 𝔱𝔥𝔦𝔰 𝔦𝔰 𝔞 𝔯𝔢𝔳𝔬𝔩𝔲𝔱𝔦𝔬𝔫.” ― 𝔖𝔲𝔟𝔠𝔬𝔪𝔞𝔫𝔡𝔞𝔫𝔱𝔢 𝔐𝔞𝔯𝔠𝔬𝔰Rules: I know, these are probably the least fun part about a roleplay, but it's necessary to maintain consistency and order.
1. General Rules: Please follow all forum rules. Be courteous to popular fellow roleplayers and please respect their beliefs and characters even if they are different from your own. This is a discourse-free zone and any hate towards any group will not be tolerated.
2. Literacy: This is a literate roleplay, and you are expected to use proper spelling and grammar whenever possible. Please do not use text talk. Obviously this doesn't apply to ooc chatting- I really don't care about your spelling or text talk as long as it stays out of your in character roleplaying. I won't set a post length limit or requirement, but do include plenty of description. Longer replies are strongly encouraged but be aware that if you post a novel-length reply I may not match your post length, though I do try. ;D
3. Diversity: Given the worldwide nature of both the Resistance and ADVENT, characters of all religions, cultures, ethnicities, and orientations are highly encouraged. LGBTQ+ characters are allowed. In addition I love characters with unusual backstories so go wild. A rebel fighter can come from literally anywhere- maybe they used to be a fry cook or a national celebrity. Maybe your ADVENT officer used to be a semi-truck driver. There are all kinds of ethnicities, jobs, personal beliefs, and even different species if your character is alien, so no character should be exactly the same as another. Make your characters diverse and interesting! :D
4. Characters: Another couple things about characters: genders do not have to be equal, but factions should be fairly equal. If you notice one faction is lacking in members, consider making a character for that side. Also, don't feel that XCOM characters have to be 'good' and ADVENT characters have to be 'evil'. Not everyone in the Resistance is fighting for good reasons, and most people in ADVENT don't see their actions as evil- rather, they are defending their world from terrorists and building a better future. Everyone has their own reasons for being on the side they are. And as a final note on characters, please do not god-mod, powerplay, spotlight, make a mary-sue, or whatever else. While some aliens may be very powerful and some humans very skilled, no one is invincible.
5. Activity: I understand we can all be very busy so I won't set an activity requirement, but do try to be on or at least check in a couple times a week. I should be fairly active but who knows. Just try to be on enough that you can interact with your team and not be leaving them in a ditch waiting for you.
6. Credit: This isn't really a rule, just me giving credit where credit is due so nobody sues me. This roleplay is based on the video game XCOM 2 by Firaxis and 2K studios. The background image as well as the names, places, logos, and concepts are based on or directly taken from the franchise and do not belong to me. I have modified some of the concepts and premise to suit the needs of this roleplay but the overall concept belongs to 2K and Firaxis.
