What was the point of announcing the mentors? That is not part of the usual announcement at a gathering.
I get that Bramblestar announced the mentors, too, but there was nothing controversial about the mentors he assigned. Rowanstar assigned apprentices to two brand new warriors and his kits. This makes ShadowClan look bad and shows to the other clans that Rowanstar can't handle his apprentices. It would have probably been fine if he just left the mentors out.
Also, why did he give apprentices to new warriors? There were plenty of other warriors at the time ready to take on an apprentice.

That was weird. I don't know why, either.

Rowanstar's a new leader, I don't think there's any strict rules on how you present your news at a gathering.

To be honest, Rowanstar just isn't that great a leader imo. He doesn't seem to think things through, and his Clan has paid for it--Bramblestar's Storm is a prime example.
