My screen's dirty enough without me touching it constantly, I don't want to think about it having a touchscreen.))
Shafer couldn't help but smirk a bit when Xanthe's stomach started making noise. He almost reached forward to poke at it but quickly remembered he wasn't supposed to do that because it hurt them both. Though he was pretty sure his hand was dry so the only real danger was him getting burned and honestly, he was alright with that concept. He nodded his confirmation about the fish. "Yes, I caught a fish for you so now you must eat it because you are hungry and also I love you." He smiled sweetly.

Xanthe gave the nymph a funny look. He was pretty sure that gargling sentence had ended with 'I love you', but maybe the language barrier was wider than he thought. Also, Shafer was giving him a pretty funny expression back- or more like concerning expression, because the nymph's grin looked like a shark's. "Ookaay..." Xanthe said uncertainly before glancing around the clearing. He would need the nymph's help in a moment, but for now he could work alone. Gathering some of the larger rocks from around the clearing, Xanthe arranged them in a small circle in a spot of sunlight near the pool. Within the circle he piled some dry leaves, as well as some larger pieces of wood that had broken away from the log. Then he sat down, crisscross, and took off one of his cuffs. For an older fire demon, this would be no problem- they could simply will a fire into existence. But Xanthe didn't possess that ability, so he simply reflected the sunlight off of the cuff until one of the leaves began to burn. After that the fire caught quickly. Standing up, he turned proudly to the nymph, to see what it would think about the nifty fire pit.

Shafer was only mildly concerned that what he'd said had actually computed through the language barrier and into Xanthe's head. But that idea was crushed as soon as he received the linguistic equivalent of a shrug and his demon started walking away from him. He watched on without intentions of giving chase if he didn't stop. He knew where he lived now so there wasn't much risk. But either way, that turned out to not be a problem, as the demon stopped soon enough to start collecting. Erm rocks and leaves. Shafer wasn't in any position to judge but oh look at him, judging away from his high and mighty position on the log. And then he sat next to his creation and started taking off clothing. Well, one piece of clothing. But it still earned a small scoff from the nymph. He shut up when the leaves started smoking. His eyes went wide as he tilted his head and stared in disbelief. His demon just used the sun to make fire and Shafer was so proud of him. "I don't know why you did it but that was a pretty good trick, Xanthe."

Xanthe gave the nymph his own grin at what sounded like approval. To tell the truth, Xanthe had never done anything like that- duh, he'd never hung out with a bunch of leaves and sticks. They didn't have that stuff at the fortress. But Xanthe obviously knew how fire worked, so it hadn't been hard at all. Now he walked carefully around the pool, searching for a wide, flat, but- most importantly- dry rock. When he'd found a suitable one, he hefted it up- it was heavier than he'd expected- and carried it over to Shafer. "Can you skin the fish?" He asked slowly, pointing at the hanging fish. He wanted to keep the scales, which matched him quite nicely.

Shafer arched a brow when Xanthe just casually picked up his favourite sunbathing rock and relocated it. Usually you were supposed to ask the homeowner before you went and did something like that. But the demon was so strong and capable, Shafer couldn't find it in his heart to scold him. He stayed quiet until the rock was placed directly in front of him. "Gods, you're so picky. Yes, I can mutilate my gift, you dork." I'm not totally sure what a nymph's equivalent of the word 'dork' is, but whatever it is, Shafer called him that. He got up from the log and strode over to the pool, casting one glance back at Xanthe to make sure he wasn't in the splash zone before he dove into his home. He went straight to the bottom, to the makeshift knife he'd been working on for the past few days. He tore it out of its space between two rocks and made his way back up to the surface. Everything was a process with his demon, he was beginning to realize. "Why do you want me to skin it? Are the scales too chewy? Because I can just scrape those off...?" He made sure to talk slowly.

Xanthe smiled when the nymph returned from the pool with a sort of knife, happy that they were somewhat understanding each other. It was a confusing feeling- especially considering how scared he'd been of Shafer only briefly before. But now... well, he was pretty sure the nymph wasn't going to kill him. He'd had plenty of chances to already, but hadn't. Plus he'd brought him a pretty fish- as pretty as a slimy creature of the depths could be. That was kind of a nice gift. Xanthe shook his head when he recognized 'scrape'. Pointing at his cuff, Xanthe said slowly, "I want a bracelet. With the scales."

im working on a moodboard for shafer ^^)) EDIT;; I would make one for you but I'm not sure if I could rp them without OP's approval <3))
Oh my gods, his love was going to make a piece of jewelry out of his gift. it took everything in Shafer to not hug him as hard as he could. Truly iconic, incredible, this was the best thing that had ever happened to him. And he was sure that was written all over his expression. He bounced over to his rock, grabbed the fish, and dropped into a sitting position to examine the creature and find the best way to do it. He furrowed his brow in concentration as he cut a precise line up the middle of its stomach. He'd hate himself forever if he messed up. After about five minutes of meticulous work, he had the skin and the meat compeltely separate from each other and he'd never been prouder of himself. Even if now he was covered in fish blood.

(I'll confess, I was on weheartit this morning and saw so much good stuff that I started my own moodboard for Shafer. I also have one for Xanthe but it is near impossible to find good material for him)
Xanthe dragged over another, smaller rock while Shafer worked. He was extremely happy with the results- the orange and red scales shining in the sunlight, intact and separated from the- ew, gross fish insides. "Put the scales there," Xanthe said, pointing at the scales and the smaller flat rock. "And put the fish there," He pointed at the large rock. Once the skin was dried out, he'd have to take it back to the orphanage and find what he needed to make a bracelet. Fire demons were very skilled at jewelry making. Specifically in forges, with molten gold and silver and precious gemstones, but they could also be very crafty.

Ohh my gggosh, you have to show me when it's done. Even before it's done honestly I just want to know how you see him :') Poor Xanthe you need to show me as soon as it's done also.))
There Xanthe went again, moving around his damn furniture. And there Shafer also went again, letting him do it. He nodded when the demon talked at thim and carefully laid the scales down on the sun warmed rock. The nymph then went to work on separating various guts from the actual meat of the fish, which he hadn't done such a good job of yet, too focused on his fiery love's bracelet. But that part wasn't nearly as difficult and he had it done soon enough. He collected the gross things and wandered over to dump them at the base of a tree in the direction of the orphanage with intentions of feeding them to that cute cat thing he'd communicated with earlier. "Are you going to set the eating part of my gift on fire? Like whatever makes it easier to eat but I personally recommend it raw..."

Xanthe moved the scale-rock over to the sunlight near the fire pit. The fire was now burning bright and hot, perfect for cooking the fish. He dipped his hands into it and lifted a handful of fire to his face, like splashing your face with water. Refreshed, he returned back to where Shafer had cut up the fish. "I don't like fish. It'll taste better cooked and hot." He said in response to what seemed like a suggestion from the nymph. He picked up the large rock with the fish meat and carried it back to the fire pit, careful not to let the fish insides touch him- they were warm enough still not to hurt him, but he didn't want bloody fish all over his clothes. Xanthe placed the rock within the fire and added more leaves before blowing on the flames to keep them from smothering. I've gone from running from him to camping with him. It was a strange thought. He's not as bloodthirsty as other water nymphs, even if he is a bit grabby.

Shafer stared with no small amount of awe when the fire demon shoved his face into the fire. Yes, he was a fire demon and all, but come on. Who does that. He strolled closer, but with an air of caution that hadn't been there before. Rather short lived, as the caution was soon replaced with indignance. "Hey! Why are you burning my sleeping rock?" he whined as he approached boldly and dropped into a sitting position next to the fire. Pretty close to the fire actually. Like dangerously close. One had to wonder if the water nymph actually wanted to die. "If you make my sleeping rock unsuitable, you'll owe me a new rock."

Xanthe unclasped his cuffs and dropped them. Shafer was sitting close to the fire pit- too close, actually, and babbling something about the rock. "Move," He said, covering his hands and cautiously pushing the nymph's shoulder. He didn't want him getting burnt or trying to grab the fish. Or, gods forbid, tried to move the rock. He seemed smart, but kind of impulsive. "The rock will be fine after." He patted a spot slightly further back before reattaching his cuffs, but past his elbow to hold his sleeves back. Reaching into the fire, he poked the fish around to make sure they got well-cooked.

Ohh my gggod0[og4 rpiuj I had just finished my response and my laptop killed the browser))
Shafer pouted deeply at being ordered around but had a sort of 'senpai touched me' moment of pure fangirl when he was nudged by Xanthe. He obediently moved back to where the demon wanted him and looked to him for approval with an annoyingly hopeful smile quirking at his lips. The way his nymph plunged his hands into the fire like that, it was unnatural and Shafer could only hope that watching him dive into water was an equally ethereal experience for Xanthe. They sat in rather comfortable silence for a minute or two before Shafer felt the need to ruin it. "Why's your hair that colour?" It had to be asked. "Did you anger a god?"

(relatable)
"What?" Xanthe asked, giving the nymph a strange look. Maybe he wasn't as good as translating/inferring/guessing as he'd thought because it sounded like Shafer had just insulted his hair. Xanthe touched his coil of braids self-consciously. "I was blessed by the gods," He told the nymph. "They gave me golden hair so that I would be greater." Most gilded fire demons had either blonde, red, or black hair. Blonde was really the most proper color, but black and red were common within most kinds of fire demons. And there were many shades of blonde, some duller and some redder and some whiter. But Xanthe was blessed with pure, golden hair. Like a million golden threads. After a minute he asked, "Why would it be a punishment?"

Shafer kind of really wanted to touch Xanthe's hair then. He managed to keep his hands to himself, only because he started talking. Blessed? No, that couldn't have been right. It was brightly coloured and unnatural, that couldn't be a blessing. "Our gods did stuff like that to humiliate someone if they did something really bad. My brother's got a lot of those colours in his hair. Like streaks. Because he was a very bad person to me, apparently." Shafer gave a solid nod, looking to be very set in his ideals. "So I just assumed you must be a very, very bad person."

(hey jingle!)
Xanthe's throat felt close. He didn't speak for a moment. "I have never done anything wrong," He said quietly. "My father's hair is golden as well. My mother's hair is red-gold, as is my brothers'." He stuck his hands back into the flames, just to wash the smears of blood from his fingers. They sizzled and dripped off. What his family did wasn't wrong. It was the truth and it was the will of the gods. And besides, Xanthe had never had anything to do with the war. This nymph's strange ideas were getting to his head. "When children are bad, water nymphs lure them into ponds and drown them," He told Shafer. "And you haven't, yet."

Shafer wasn't at all convinced. He was sure Xanthe wasn't good for anyone, much less himself, but he wanted him around regardless. Which he thought was just another testament to his undying love. "Maybe you're just all bad then," he muttered underneath his breath. He didn't realize how much sense the other nymph's language was making at this point, it was coming almost naturally. "That's actually true though. Well, I don't know how true when it comes to fire nymphs but humans certainly have something to fear. It's why I'm so pretty." He gave Xanthe a smile. "So I can lure in humans better."

Xanthe stared at the nymph. He really wasn't pretty- water nymphs were quite ugly with their gills, scales, and scary eyes. But... Xanthe supposed there was an appeal. He blushed, his cheeks almost glowing with the golden blood just under the surface. "No," He told Shafer. "I'm pretty. I'm fair and gold and shining." If water nymphs used their looks to trap humans, he couldn't imagine how they ever got a hold of fire demons. Even if there was something alluring about how dark and spooky Shafer seemed. Xanthe supposed the stockholm syndrome was kicking in. "And," He added, "I'm not a nymph. I'm a gilded fire demon. We're the prettiest kind of fire demons, and better than nymphs."

"You have no idea what you're talking about!" Shafer exclaimed, though was still smiling good naturedly as he leaned forward over his folded legs to stare Xanthe down more effectively. "I've been told by many, many beings that I'm ethereally gorgeous. Not just other nymphs. Pretty much the only thing that differs me from a siren is my voice." He frowned then and lifted a hand to tentatively brush it against his neck. His voice was really quite jarring. It wasn't rough but it certainly wasn't smooth, it was just. Weird. Bubbly. It was like listening to a waterfall that was too close. He was snapped out of his own thoughts when the fire nymph went on. He scoffed and looked him over shamelessly. Took a few seconds to make an assessment. "... I hate to break it to you... But you're a nymph. Maybe a species of a nymph that the gods despise, but a nymph nonetheless."
|

Xanthe's eyes flashed as he glared at Shafer. "I am not a nymph," He said forcefully. "Nymphs are silly, like you. Demons have greater intelligence and more sophisticated cultures," He continued. "And we're much prettier. Like incubi," He grinned slyly. "So, unlike you, I am not a nymph." Xanthe noticed now that they were having a conversation. Or a debate. Though small words were different, and pronunciation was occasionally drastically different- it really was quite easy. He attributed this to the fact that demons- such as himself- picked up on languages very quickly. Realizing that the fish was about ready, Xanthe thrust his hands into the flames and removed the entire rock. The heat felt good on his skin, like a warm bath.

Oh. Yeah, that hit a spot Shafer didn't like. The spines beneath his arm bands bristled hard enough to tear a bit, the rip of leather piercing through the uncomfortable silence. He fought to keep his impulses under control but before he had even realized what his impulse wanted him to do, he was reaching over and flicking a few drops of water onto the fire demon's skin. Like when you sprayed a cat with a water bottle when it misbehaved. "I'm the only nymph you know and you're already hopelessly in love with me so you should probably do some more research before you start making those ridiculous claims." He crossed his arms and shifted back an inch or two once he realized what he did could be construed as. Provoking. "And I really don't know what all the hype is about incubi. Fragile screamers, is all they are."

Xanthe shrieked angrily, caught completely off-guard by the nymph's splash. He scrambled away and through the fire pit, putting it between him and Shafer. "Why did you do that!? He exclaimed, eyes flickering. Xanthe had missed both of his comments. He quickly dipped his hand into the fire and slathered it on the spots where the water had touched. It hadn't hurt too terribly bad, just a sharp flash of pain, but he felt betrayed. And just when he was starting to trust the nymph. "You hurt me," He told him. The 'again' was unspoken. Maybe water nymphs didn't drown fire demons, they just used surprise attacks like that until the demon shriveled up and died. Just more proof that demons were more sophisticated- Xanthe wouldn't have thrown sparks at Shafer on purpose.

Shafer blinked in surprise, lips parting uselessly as he searched for an answer. He really missed when Xanthe couldn't understand him, then he could've just said something that didn't make any sort of sense and it wouldn't have made a difference to the demon. He glanced to the side and folded his arms across his chest as he lowkey pouted. "You made me tear my arm bands." He finally decided that was the main reason and not the deep emotional trauma his species had been facing for the past few hundred years that made the worth of his culture a sore topic. Shafer was silent for a few more seconds before he broke. "I'm sorry, you pissed me off. You can do something back if you want." He offered his arm out, brow furrowed and lips pressed together, entirely prepared for the pain already.
