Ember narrowed her eyes once again at the newcomer. "It seems you do. Who's to say you won't bring misfortune on us?" But then her amber gaze returned to normal. "Well, I'm not superstitious. It is a little odd though that so many who get close to you meet such terrible fates..."
She then turned away to gaze at the wall of the spacious den. Well, I suppose I don't have much room to talk."

(sorry, again, that I haven't been around. Busy and lacking muse as always. And wasn't quite sure the direction I wanted to take this rp in particular so I didn't really have any inspiration. But I was thinking about it and now I think I'm re-inspired so I'm gonna TRY to be active again. So, I'll go ahead and do a mass tag and then ask: anyone in favor of skipping ahead a couple of moons? I think we've gotten a bit muddled down with this particular part of the story. I think skipping to the beginning of spring would be a good place to "start", since that would be about the time that cats would decide to part ways, if they do in fact decide to do that. IE, it's the pivotal moment where they decide if they're staying together for good or not.)

(rip I didn't do the thing last night. So here it is today.)
It was birdsong that woke Crow one morning about a moon and a half later- not the occasional call of a single lonely bird but the relentless celebration of many throughout the forest. The white tom flicked his ear irritably at the noise, unused to any sounds outside but the silence of winter and the occasional muffled pawsteps or soft voices of his new denmates. The irritating noise continued, however, and after a few moments he blinked open his differently-colored eyes to golden morning sunlight slanting through the entrance of the den. He stared for a heartbeat, unsure of what he was seeing- the quality of the light had somehow changed between this dawn and last. Swiveling his ears towards the mouth of the burrow, he listened to the birds, relaxing as he realized that was what had woken him. Getting to his paws, he stretched, and then headed for the entrance of the den.
In Ember's nest at the back, the kit Snow stirred, raising his head as his uncle left. He watched him for a moment before scrambling out of the nest, careful not to wake his "mother" but less careful with his littermates, as he stepped on Raven's tail as he hopped out of the nest.
"Hey!" Raven whined quietly, blinking sleep out of his gray eyes. "Where are you going?" he asked, tilting his head as he realized Snow appeared to be in a hurry.
"I'm following Crow," Snow answered dismissively. "Maybe I can get him to teach me how to hunt!"
"I wanna hunt!" Raven meowed with wide eyes, all sleepiness gone as he hopped to his paws as well and followed his larger brother.
Outside, Crow had paused on the roots of the oak tree, surveying the clearing and the forest around it. It didn't really look any different, but the morning light was warm gold rather than cold gray, and there was birdsong in the trees. The snow didn't seem quite as soft and powdery, and Crow thought he could see a few tiny green buds on the tips of some of the highest tree branches. It would be spring soon.
The white tom turned as he heard tiny pawsteps from in the den, twitching his whiskers at the confident Snow marching up, and tiny Raven trailing behind, still stumbling a bit from sleep.
"You two are up early," he commented, curling his tail around both of the kits as they stopped beside him.
Raven nodded. "Snow said we're gonna learn how to hunt!" The little black kit looked expectantly up at his uncle, blue-gray eyes round. Crow let out a short purr of amusement, turning his gaze to the white kitten, who glowered at his brother.
"Did he now?" he replied, giving Snow a slight nudge. Then his expression became more serious and thoughtful for a moment. "I suppose it's as good a time as any to start teaching you. You'll have to learn sometime after all, and the sooner the better, really... just in case something happens to me, or Ember, and you need to fend for yourselves...." he trailed off into a thoughtful murmur by the end of his sentence, but the kits didn't really seem to notice or care about anything except the fact that he would teach them how to hunt.
"I'm gonna catch a whole deer like Losami," Raven boasted, pouncing on a barren twig that poked out of the snow a few mouselengths away.
"Well, I'll catch a... badger! Even Losami can't do that by herself," Snow countered, puffing out his chest.
"You can't eat a badger though, mouse-brain," Raven retorted, tossing a pawful of snow at his brother. Snow growled playfully, pouncing on the smaller kit and sending them both tumbling into a snow drift. Crow watched them with amused expression as they play-fought, considering how best to start teaching the young kits how to hunt.

A rough and wild wind whistled through the high peaks of the mountains. The shrubs and small plants waving wildly to the comforting sound of the wind. The sun's rays beaming mercilessly down on the gray surface. From farther up pebbles began to skip down the rocky slopes as a goat and her kid made their way across. The two paused by a tumbling spring to take a lap. The mother freezing when a shrubbery nearby rustled. The goat let out a soft bleat and her and the kid hurriedly began to trot away. When a small brown shape exploded from the shrubs with a small, pitiful roar. The goats dodged the predators attack, turning the other direction. While the shape landed hard on the cliffs edge, sliding off. A wail rose from the creatures jaws as it tried to get a grip on the edge, claws extended. "Daddy!"
"Losami can't do that by herself!"
Losami's amber eyes flew open as she heard her name as she did every other night. But the cat that called her name didn't come to the deep and gruff voice of her father, but it was the tiny mewling of a kitten. The lynx's jaws widened in a long yawn, back arched and claws extended. She sat up and looked around the clearing where she slept outside of the hollow. Crow and his nephews were up quiet early. The honey-colored cat knew instantly it was what woke her up.
"What's all this talk about deer and badgers?" She mewed as she approached the three, paws crunching the fallen leaves beneath her. The lynx loved then time when spring was near. The sound of birdsong, the sweet scents that the wind brought, and it was always plentiful of prey. "Deer hunting season is well on its way. There be plenty of fawns running around the forest in a moons time."
She then looked back at her companion, Midnight, who also slept outside the hollow to keep guard. "Maybe when everyone's awake, we can take out a hunting patrol."

Rinako couldn't sleep; there was too much talking going on just outside the den. Deciding that there was no point in trying to sleep any longer, he bitterly stretched and stood up. The voices outside were talking about hunting. I could go for some food. the tom thought. He had a little bit of experience with hunting now, thanks to Crow. Perhaps he could catch a little something for himself if there was a hunting patrol going out soon.
Astria snorted when a clump of melting snow fell on her head, instantly waking her up. She had been sleeping with her body half-in, half-out of a crude makeshift den. It wasn't ideal but it was better than nothing. Sighing, she stood up and looked around. Melting snow. Spring must be coming. she determined. She was still cold though, and terribly hungry. Some hunting would probably warm her up, so she shook the snow off her her and began to do just that.

Crow dipped his head to Losami as he approached, assuming that the kits talking about her had caught her attention, which amused him. "They want to learn how to hunt," he explained. "Raven is going to catch a deer, and Snow will catch a badger," he added with a twitch of his long whiskers. Growing more serious, he added: "A hunting patrol is certainly not a bad idea, we'll need fresh-kill for the day. But you two can't come with us out of the clearing," he added to the kits, looking in their direction. Snow let out a whine, hopping away from where he had been wrestling Raven.
"Awww, why?" His dark green eyes were round with disappointment.
"It's too dangerous. You might be old enough to start learning but it'll still be a little while before you're big enough and skilled enough to hunt safely," Crow answered.
Raven nodded, understanding, but Snow looked less convinced. "I'm big enough to catch mice just fine!" he retorted, lashing his tail. Crow sighed, not in the mood to deal with a temper tantrum from the young cat. He looked at Losami helplessly.
"I'm sure you could. It's all the other animals in the forest you have to be worried about. Now come on, I'm sure Ember is wondering where you two are by now," he replied, flicking his tail as he turned to slip back into the darkness of the burrow. "It's early; get a little more sleep, and I'll start teaching all five of you later, when it's warmer out."

(Awesomee Hey is Jingle accepted?) Ember was having a peaceful sleep, next to the warm bodies of her den-mates and adopted kits beside her. The ground started to feel a little colder however, and she heard familiar voices. That rambunctious child, Snow... she thought to herself, whiskers twitching in amusement, as her amber eyes slowly opened. It was too early for playtime; Ember just wanted to rest more. But kits will be kits. She sighed and listened to the chatter outside.

Rinako turned to Ember and gave her a nod of acknowledgement; it must have been annoying, dealing with rambunctious kittens all the time. Then he pushed his way out of the den and into the soft glow of the morning sun, where Crow, Losami, and the kittens would be.

{Ayy I'm back! } Rain rose, stretching the drowsiness out of her legs. "Good morning," she meowed to Ember, who she could see was also in the den. "It seems to be bordering on Spring," she remarked at the warmth of the air flowing into the den.

Snow let out a groan at Crow's suggestion. "I don't wanna sleep more! I want to hunt!" Crow let out a sigh, rolling his eyes at the smaller white tom.
"Fine, I'll start teaching you now." He glanced at Raven, adding, "Are you up for learning this early, too?" The black kit nodded, though he looked uncertain. He was already beginning to shiver slightly; Crow hoped movement would keep him warmer. "Alright, go back inside and tell Ember what we're doing then," Crow ordered, nudging the two kits back inside. He looked at the others apologetically, giving a shrug. "I suppose you'll have to hunt without me."
Meanwhile, Snow trotted back into the den with Raven at his heels. He pricked his ears when he saw that Ember was already awake, glad he wouldn't have to wake her. "Crow is gonna teach us how to hunt!" he murmured to the gray she-cat as he came closer, puffing out his chest. Raven nodded as well, his gray eyes betraying excitement.

(hm I think I'll just skip a bit again lmao. Maybe to a few days later or something, rather than later in the same day.)
Crow and the others were still sleeping quietly as the sun rose, marked by birdsong in the trees. The light was warm and golden, chasing away the frost that had built up on the leaves and logs of the forest overnight. By now, snow remained only in the shadows, the rest having melted away to reveal fresh, cold soil and the browned grass of the previous year. Another half moon had passed, and it was clear that winter was, for the time being, no more.
The kits had grown considerably in their one moon of life, and though they could not exactly be considered big yet they were certainly not the minuscule beans they had been on the night the group had first come together. They were finally beginning to resemble cats rather than tiny kittens, and this particular fact had began to go to Snow's head.
The tiny white tom-kit first awoke just as the gray light begin to illuminate the interior of the den, slowly changing from gray to gold as the sun broke over the horizon. For a time he tried to get back to sleep- after all, no one else was up yet and he wasn't supposed to go out alone- but the snoring and warmth of too many cats eventually forced him out of the nest. He stretched, stepping to the entrance of the den to gaze outside with wide eyes. Up until only a few days ago, he hadn't actually realized that there was anything under the snow besides more snow; after all, he had lived his entire, short life in winter up until now. The buds that had begun to form on the ends of tree branches amazed him even more, for he had never seen a color so brilliant as that pale green of new leaves; the closest that compared was the dull, hazy green of distant firs.
Now, he stood at the edge of the den, staring out with itching paws. He desperately wanted to explore, to see what this new world had to offer, but.... he glanced over his shoulder. All the others were sleeping. He wasn't supposed to go out.
Still.... I'm a big kit now, he thought to himself. I should be able to handle going outside and sniffing around. He took another, uncertain look inside the den before stepping outside. The air felt nice, cold as compared to the warm interior but refreshing, and his thick pelt protected him against the worst of its bite. He took a deep breath, looking around the clearing to decide where to explore first. He noticed a strange hill on the other side of the meadow, seemingly out of place from the rest of the flat ground, and bounded over. He hopped up to the top, suddenly feeling more confident now that he was on higher ground. I'm the leader of.... a Clan! he thought, remember some of the stories that Ember had told him about the large groups of cats who lived together, much like he did with the others but with a leader and deputy and warriors. Well, he was the leader now, he decided. "And... Squirrel is deputy," he murmured to himself, sitting down on top of the mound. "And... Raven can be the medicine cat, because he doesn't like to fight."
He pondered his fictional Clan for a moment longer before something bright flashed at the edge of his vision. Looking up, he noticed a strange leaf fluttering through the air just within the trees. No... not a leaf... a creature of some sort. Like a bird, but... with leaves for wings? He tilted his head, staring at it as its blue-and-black wings flashed in the early morning sunlight. He glanced back towards the den. He'd never been out of the clearing, Crow had strictly forbidden it. But... surely it wasn't dangerous just to walk a little farther? And he had to know what sort of creature had blue and black leaves for wings.

Hunger had been the waker for Dawn, the young kit now used to its familiar pang. Although her mother and Storm did the best they could to keep her fed, it was still one cat hunting for four throughout an entire leaf-bare. It hadn't been easy, but both kits were alive. The she-kit turned to look towards her mother, hoping she could muster up some milk for her. But alas, the tortoiseshell's mother was still fast asleep, curled up close beside her brother and Shadow. Dawn flinched as she felt her stomach grumble once more. She was getting restless now. For the majority of her life, she had been living in the small clearing the small family called home, and spent most of her time in the hollow where they slept. But now that she was just shy of a moon old, she wanted to see more of what was out there. And so, she decided she would. After all, the adult cats were asleep, and as far as she was concerned, that left her in charge. The kit slid quietly out of the hollow and blinked through the sunlight, her breaths coming out in small clouds. She padded out through the clearing, eager to find some food on the other side.

(( it's aliiiiive! i remember my plan was to have my two cats who are brother and sister end up starting a rival group, that could turn into a second clan eventually, or end up joining the main group. ))
Squirrel woke up to the sun shining into the den. She leaped to her feet, eyes glowing with excitement. She hardly paused a second before dashing out of the den into the clearing. The air was crisp and clear, cold, but fresh too. Her eyes took in the greens of the forest, still as fascinating to her as the first time she'd ever seen them. She noticed movement near the edge of the clearing--a little rustle, as is some cat were walking beyond them. Ignoring the instructions she'd been given never to leave the clearing, she ran through the ferns into the beyond.
****
Snowdrop was out in the forest for some early morning hunting before his sister got up. New plants had started to come up, and with them came the small creatures. For the first time since he'd arrived here the forest was alive with scents. Throughout leafbare Snowdrop and Ginger had learned to avoid of the small group of cats that resided in a clearing near their den, but now that the forest was waking up, Snowdrop was too excited to think not to go in the direction of their home. He had scented a mouse, and was following the trail closer to the clearing.
Finally, he saw it, in the remains of the snow, nibbling on a leaf. His mouth watered with anticipation; he could almost taste his prey. He was about to pounce when he head a small squeal. He turned his head sharply, and the mouse darted away, startled by his movement. However, Snowdrop was too interesting in the noise to care much about a lost mouse. He wasn't sure, but he thought it sounded feline--and young. Alarmed at the idea of lost kits in the forest, Snowdrop forgot his hunting and ran off to find the source of the noise.

(Yo sorry I didn't reply I fell asleep and then forgot lmao. I'll replay later when I'm not at work lol. Anyways, it was Snowdrop and Ginger that ended up in Coyote's den right? Should they have stuck together for the winter? That could be the start of their group, plus it would help to diffuse tension, in the beginning at least, since Crow knows her, and she's the kits aunt on their father's side.)

(Alright, sounds good. As for Snowdrop I suppose happening upon one of the kits... that could be Snow and, I suppose, possibly Squirrel as well... or we could change plans and have it be Dawn, and then perhaps their little group could join up with Coyote, Snowdrop, and Ginger. It wouldn't exactly even them out, but it would certainly bring the two groups closer to being equals.)
