Cats always make a big deal about exile, but is it really so bad? As long as you know how to hunt and take care of yourself, I don't see what the big deal is. Rogues live without the warrior code and they're fine with it. Kittypets live in their homes, as well as loners live in barns or other groups of cats.
Really, I just think some cats are better off without the Clans. I just wish Mapleshade would have realized that her Clan isn't even worth freaking out about when they kicked her out. Yes, it's quite hard to deal with herself and the kits on her own, but would she rather take care of the kits, knowing that she loves them, or have them live in the Clan where they'll get rejected and probably bullied out of hatred from Oakstar and Frecklewish?

Cats who are in clans enjoy the social aspect of it. They like being part of a community. It is not an issue of survival more than it is being disowned from your community and family.

well i think the biggest part about exile is the fact that you are forcefully being taken away from friends, family, or allies. you are being taken away from the life you always knew. you are being taken away from society and essentially you are being "isolated".
the warrior code, as strict as it is, kept the clans in order. outside of the clans is complete anarchy (at least that is what is demonstrated and thats what most cats within clans tend to see or believe). you are no longer allowed to live the life you have always known, because life is just so much more drastically different out there.
that scares a lot of cats, y'know?

My guess is that the reason why they make a big deal about exile is because they don't want to lose their friends and family. As for Mapleshade yeah I agree about what you're saying, but my guess is that the reason why Mapleshade was acting like that was because her brain wasn't really thinking that well. I haven't read the book yet but from what other people said about it made me not want to read it, but besides that a reason why I think her brain wasn't working well was because didn't she yell at one of her kits when they were traveling to Riverclan? Imo I think her anger made her think about other stuff and not about what was best for her and her kits.

Well... An exiled cat is separated from their family, and their entire culture. I'd say that would be pretty devastating (I guess except for really evil cats like Tigerstar). And this probably isn't as big a deal, but the structured life and routine that they're used to is also snatched away, and they have to get used to that as well.
The way I see it, exile is kind of like getting booted out of not only the military but your entire country, and the only family you have is in the country you left behind.
Yes, being outside a Clan is better for some cats, but generally speaking, being part of a Clan is something integral to them.

I think exile is a big deal, because you are being forced out of your home and away from your friends and family. The cats that were once your allies are now your enemies. and can attack you if they wish. You have no support system and you are on you're own. This makes you more vunerable. If an exiled cat is attacked by a fox or a badger (StarClan forbid a group of them) you're pretty much done for. However, within a Clan you have cats to come rescue you and back you up. There is also the risk of getting sick and not being able to treat yourself. Therefor you are left to die in the wilderness.
Rogues and loners are used to living on their own because it's all they know. Clan cats are used to surrounding themselves with others and having help if they need it. When you take all that away from them it's pretty upsetting.
