Cleaning rooms, drawing baths, serving dinner, tossing waste. Agnes Porter's routine was repetitive and for the most part, rather dull. She was currently hanging linens to dry which was one of her easier tasks, as well as one of the more cleanly tasks. She hung the last linen on the line and stepped back, taking a breath. "No time to waste dear, time to help prepare the midday meal." The voice called from the door, Agnes turned, her unruly auburn hair coming loose from its braid once again. She quickly, and messily rebraided her hair as she headed back into the servent's hall. Scurrying by she made her way into the kitchen watching the hustle and bustle of all of the other servants making their way around. It was organized chaos hard at work. With a quick glance Agnes made her way to the already finished dishes and lifted one up, heading out towards the dining hall, back strait but eyes lowered as she entered the room that held the most powerful person in the country. Swallowing she began serving, never looking into anyone's eye and attempting to ignore all conversation.

Emeline smiled and inclined her hand, taking the books in her hands. She wasn't sure how long it would take her to get through them - maybe she'd be able to ask one of her ladies-in-waiting to read it to her or something - but she found that she wanted to. She wanted to know Adele, and knowing the stories she'd been told would certainly make that easier. "Thank you, I will." she said.
She turned to lead the way to a shelf on the other side of the library. This half was all from her own kingdom, and one of them contained every legend anyone had ever bothered to write down within its borders. She trailed her hand along the spines, pulling out a book every now and then. Before long she had a nice stack, filled with her favourites.
"Here." She held them out, looking proud. "These are my favourites. I've never been great at recommendations, but these are classics so I think you'd like them. Every child in Asilion knows these, but the other two are less known." She pointed them out as she spoke.

Swallowing she began serving, never looking into anyone's eye and attempting to ignore all conversation. Laugh at the right jokes, be polite, be graceful, be submissive, serve the queen but at the same time seek to replace her. It was strange, being a lady-in-waiting. It was a role unlike any other in the kingdom, completely unique simply because it was strange. An unusual hybrid between a servant and a lady, between serving the queen and trying to take her place when it inevitably ended terribly, like most of King Henry's relationships did. Not that anyone dared comment on it, knowing that you could very well be going the way of some of his wives if you dared suggest that Henry having been married so many times was due to anything more than bad luck. Eliza Cambridge was a prized lady-in-waiting, already having caught the eye of the King, as well as many of the lords around him. There was gossip among her fellow ladies-in-waiting that Henry would take Eliza as his mistress. It was something Eliza was meant to hope for, meant to be happy about, but to tell the truth she would hate it. The King was much older than she, rude and riddled with gout, and with a disturbing tendency to kill or divorce his wives if they didn't bear him sons.
A servant girl around her own age was serving up the food, and Eliza politely thanked her as she passed, though she hadn't heard anyone else thanking her. Well, how rude, not to give thanks for your food! Eliza was probably seen as the strange one, but she thought it was much more pleasant to thank the person serving the food to you. After all, she was doing a wonderful job of it and she would have to work so hard.

"Oh, wow, thank you, these look great" Adele smiled, examining each book as she was handed it. They all looked very interesting, and she was very much looking forward to getting the chance to read them "I've never heard of any of them, so I'm very much looking forward to reading them" She loved reading a new story - she always learned something new, took something new away from it. That was another reason why she loved books so much - they gave her a chance to learn something new and brow as a person. She didn't often get opportunities to do that, if she were honest, so she valued getting a chance to do so. That was also why she had often read them to her sister - she had wanted her little sister to also be able to learn new things, and she wanted to be able to say that she had taught her sister all of these wonderful things that she might not otherwise have learned. And she could still say that now - she could say that she had influenced her little sister's life in many different ways. Though sometimes she feared that the way she had influenced it the most was by leaving, that her leaving had had such a negative effect on Matilda's life that it overrode everything else.

Agnes had grown so used to being ignored that the small thank you surprised her as she served the ladies in waiting. Blinking her round brown eyes she nodded, a small smile and a blush on her cheeks. "Of course, no need to thank me." She murmured quickly before continuing down the row, heart thumping quickly for some reason. There was still lots of food to be served but she took her time, not wanting to spill anything, especially not on anyone important. Pausing to make sure everyone had been served she made her escape to the kitchen, raising her head from the cowering stance she had had in the dining hall. Calm down you. It was just a thank you it's not that big of a deal. She thought to herself. And yet it made her nervous for some reason, maybe she didn't want to be noticed. That was how servants ended up dying, when they were noticed. And yet this wasn't a bad thing. She was only thanked. She scolded herself again, collecting her thoughts. She was not there to question she was there to serve. Picking up another dish she made her way back into the dining hall, once again meek and mild.

And this was why Eliza was so greatly valued - she had an appearance greatly beloved by the King. She was tall and slim, willowy and almost ethereal, with extremely pale, almost white, skin. Her hair was long and curly and an even more vibrant red than the king's, and she had glittering green eyes. She was blessed with the kind of appearance the King valued in women, making her extremely desirable in court.

( excuse the short post ^^' )
Emeline's smile grew and she nodded. "I hope you'll find them just as great once you've read through them." She turned back to the shelf for a moment, readjusting the books so that the spaces between them weren't so obvious, then gestured to the exit of the library.
"Should I take you to your rooms? It might be easier to set all those books down now, rather that hauling them through the rest of the castle." She nodded to the stacks they were both holding. They were easy enough to hold now, but she knew that they would get heavy quickly, especially if they took to walking through the corridors again.

[No problem, mine's short too x So, we should probably have a plot event come up soon. There's the obvious one of her parents acting up, but I feel like that's something we might want to save for later?] Adele had watched as the other girl adjusted the books to hide the gaps. She hadn't realised how many they'd taken between them - it had probably been a good ida to readjust the books just in case they were missed. She didn't want to get in trouble, and she certainly didn't want to get Emeline into any trouble. "Ah, right, yes." Adele laughed "We probably should go and put these down somewhere, shouldn't we? Probably isn't a good idea to be hauling these around with us everywhere we go"

A lot of searching, that's how. It was getting sort of stressful - I'd had a million letters to write to Congress, who were pushing us to make moves we just simply didn't have the manpower to pull off - and I'd needed somewhere quiet and peaceful to go and clear my head"

( yeah, I definitely agree. we could do something with Em's parents maybe, though I'm not sure what that would be. )
Emeline grinned. "Alright then, right this way." She stepped back over to the doors, popping one open with her hip seeing as her hands were occupied. It was unladylike, and if her mother had seen she'd be scolded harshly, but nobody was there - other than Adele of course, and Emeline was sure she wouldn't mention it. She should have still called for someone to open it for her, the library would contain somebody to help, but she didn't see the point.
She stepped out into the corridor, and after waiting for Adele to join her, started making her way down the hall. "You'll be sleeping in the same wing as my parents and I," she explained as she walked. "My mother thought it would be rude to place you in any wing but the royal one. She's insisting you're nothing but a political guest, though I suppose you must disagree as much as my father does. Either way, you'll be close to most things in the castle, and have servants at your beck and call should you require assistance. You should find your rooms are ready for you when we get there, but if something's missing I'm sure someone will help you fix that for you as quickly as possible."

[Hm, I like the idea of doing something with the parents, but, yeah, I'm also completely dry for ideas. Sorry! ] Adele hadn't said a word about Emeline opening the door with her hip - Adele had done it countless times herself, and she personally didn't see a problem with it, though her mother had constantly nagged her about it, insisting that it was incredibly ladylike and should never be done, even when not in public. Honestly, though, Adele couldn't care less - at home, she largely did what she wanted unless it was in public or her parents were watching her - and it was sort of comforting to see Emmeline doing the same. It reminded her that they were more similar that it at first appeared. The girl had been forced to stop herself from almost snorting at the term 'political guest' - she was surprised anyone thought she qualified as a 'political guest', especially considering the word 'guest' didn't even slightly suggest the permanence of Adele's stay, nor did it suggest 'will be killed if her parents step out of line', though she wasn't sure there was any term to suggest that. She was certainly in quite a unique position - well, she had heard of it happening before, but she certainly didn't see it as normal. It certainly wasn't an average thing to happen to someone. "Well, yes, I probably wouldn't refer to myself as a political guest," Adele smiled "But I can't say I could think of a better term for whatever all of this is. Anyway, I'm certainly grateful at the generosity of your parents. I didn't really know what to expect, but I'm not sure I could say I was expecting to be placed somewhere as nice as the royal wing, especially alongside yourself and your parents"

"And how does such a hardworking man as yourself find the time to attend a gala?" She asked, peering up at the taller man. She had thought herself tall until she met Isaac Peake, but she only just came up to his shoulder and her hands seemed almost childlike as her hand found his again.

She had thought herself tall until she met Isaac Peake, but she only just came up to his shoulder and her hands seemed almost childlike as her hand found his again. "His friends drag him along," Isaac laughed as he took her hand "that's how" He took her hand, astonished at how soft and doll-like it was, and moved a little closer to her, so close he could swear he could smell her perfume. "Tell me, Eleanor" he said softly "what made you decide that you wanted to spend this evening with me, of all the men in New York?"

"I could ask you the same question, Isaac." She murmured, smiling as he moved closer. "I would have to say that it's because you don't care who I am. And you didn't laugh at my horrible dancing. It didn't matter that I couldn't care less about formalities. And you, you Issac Peake have a brilliant mind and a kind heart; along with a gorgeous face." Her eyes quickly widened as she realized what she had said and tried to come up with something else to say but couldn't think of anything to save her.

Isaac laughed at her last comment - not a mocking laugh, but an amused one, his cheeks pinking a little "Oh, don't try and change what you said. It was very sweet of you to say, Eleanor. But if you were to ask me the same question, I'd say because you didn't laugh in my face when I asked you to dance - coming from a family like yours, you very well could've. And because you're sweet, and smart, and opinionated, and you're not afraid to tease. And, of course, because you're very beautiful"

A dark blush formed on her cheeks and she chuckled softly. "You don't have to compliment me Isaac, I already like you." Leaning against his arm she murmured, "I apologize to anyone of my status to have ever done that to you, they don't know who they've turned away."

Not knowing what to say, she sighed softly and slowly stepped closer to the man. Eleanor Thompson was normally quite good with words, even if she had run out of things to say she was always clever enough to continue the conversation. But things were different around Isaac Peake.

Her work became much less difficult without some of the table there. She finished off the dish and finally dared to look up at the ladies-in-waiting.
She slowed her retreat from the room to try and watch a little longer. They were stunning, graceful and lithe, or it appeared that way anyway. She would never even consider it but in her own way she was beautiful. Full cheeks, an easy smile, freckles covering every inch of skin. Her hands were strong, with long fingers that were rough and calloused. Her auburn hair was thick and curly, when it wasn't tightly braided and pushed from her face by a kerchief. And her eyes, they were a bright caramel color framed by dark brown lashes.
She was like a wild animal that had been tamed in away, not really looking like she belonged and yet, not having anywhere to go. Realizing that she was dallying she blinked and made her way back into the kitchen grabbing yet another dish and making her way back into the dining room.

But the servant had soon hurried away and the music soon finished, the dance ending as the women swept into deep bows for the King. The men were all clapping, especially the King, who had his eyes fixed firmly on Eliza again, much to her dismay. Well, thus was uncomfortable. She had clearly caught the King's attention, something she knew she should want but wasn't entirely sure we did. (Should we maybe skip?)

{{of course!}}
Cleaning rooms was probably one of Agnes's favorite things, not because of the cleaning necessarily but because it was usually one of the few times that she was alone. Making the bed she hummed some of the tune that the ladies-in-waiting had danced to earlier in the day. She finished the bed and moved on to the fire seeing as it was just a bit chilly in the room. Stoking what was left of the fire she added small limbs, wanting to get it going before adding anything too large. As she waited for that to heat up she moved onto the windows, making sure they were closed with the curtains drawn, didn't want anyone catching cold. The fire was crackling brightly now and she added a larger log, humming once again. Agnes took a candle off of the mantle and began lighting the rest of the candles for some light in the room.

Eliza, after a day of entertaining the king, was more than ready to head back to her rooms early and relax for the evening. It wasn't so physically taxing, of course, but when the smallest of slip ups in conversation, so much as using an incorrect title or even a wobble in tone, could mean you execution, it was tiring in its own way.
She was thankful for every day she got it right, every day she survived. Not many ladies-in-waiting survived very long once they got Henry's attention. One of his previous queens, who had only been nineteen, was dead within the year.
As she entered a room, she saw the maid from earlier, who was tidying her room. "Oh, I'm sorry," Eliza said "I know I'm not usually back this early. I can come back later if I'm disturbing you or anything"
