Do you guys think that Thistleclaw was really evil or just overly ambitious? He seems to be portrayed as the latter for much of Bluestar's Prophecy, but then again, while he does challenge Oakheart when he trespassed as the warrior code states, Thistleclaw nearly killed him by having his claws on Oakheart's throat and there's even mention of the latter actually bleeding. In the same scene, he also wishes to mark the borders with blood, so this does give a sense that he's at least battle-hungry taken to the extreme. And while Code 12 only applies to Clan kits, it was still pretty cruel how he goaded Tigerpaw on into attacking Tiny (not that Bluefur was innocent either though, considering she did nothing to intervene sooner).
Then in Crookedstar's Promise, he's shown to enjoy training in the Dark Forest and pretty much insults StarClan while knowing very well what the Dark Forest is.
Now, going back to my previous question, do you think Thistleclaw is actually evil? And as far as CP is concerned, do you think the Erins always intended for him to be in the DF or do you think the decision and his portrayal in CP were more of an afterthought?

I think he was overly ambitious tbh. I've seen a lot of people defend Hawkheart, despite him being a battle hungry medicine cat. Hawkheart actually brutally murdered a cat, even when she was down, in front of her own kit. Heck, he even tried to goad that same kit to fight him earlier, meaning he'd have no problem ripping into a younger cat. Thistleclaw has never killed anyone one in canon on screen, and never really broken any real warrior codes before all this, until the Erins decided to show him with Silverhawk in CP later on. And then did more on his character but only AFTER he was in the Dark Forest. Also keep in mind that Bluestar's SE is just that, it's seen from her perspective, I've seen people disregard Mapleshade's credibility because of her POV in her e-book, then what about Bluestar's in her SE?

I think he was always evil, and it's very easily for overly ambitious characters to become evil when their ambition becomes warped. That's exactly what the Dark Forest does…
As for Hawkheart, I don't think he was actually evil, just battle hungry and defending his Clan… Moonflower destroyed all his herbs; why would not he act in self-defense and attack her? As for Bluestar, I think she was in the wrong place at the wrong time. He was going to goad her into attacking him because he wasn't thinking straight (again, desperate to defend his Clan, adrenaline running from the battle).
Being battle hungry and killing someone doesn't necessarily make one evil. It's the circumstances that do.

The code says not to kill unless necessary or in self defense. This was not necessary. It didn't change anything.

I think he was a little bit of both. He was very ambitious, but normally evil. He wasn't bullied into this, he was just born that way. He could have had a good life, with a good mother and two sisters. He just was both.
