Since people are talking about Tigerheart, I decided to put my own thoughts about this character, and I have come to realize something: Was it partly Tigerheart's fault that Dovewing didn't move on from him?
Now, don't get me wrong, this is also partly Dovewing's fault too for not trying hard enough. But right from the moment when Dovewing wanted to leave him in TLH, Tigerheart didn't want to let her go. Instead of supporting her choice like he should have, Tigerheart argued with her:
I don't think Tigerheart really respects her and he isn't being fair to her. Had Tigerheart supported her choice to leave him more, I think Dovewing would have moved on from him. Why do I think this? Well, in BrS, it has been mentioned several times that Dovewing avoided Tigerheart. But Tigerheart kept looking for her:
I can't find it, but it was said that Bramblestar saw Tigerheart looking at Dovewing, but she looked away from him as if she was avoiding him.
Now, like I said, Dovewing didn't try hard enough because she asked how ShadowClan was doing, probably hinting that she was worried about Tigerheart the most. However, she could genuinely be worried about ShadowClan and not just Tigerheart. But knowing how hard it may have been for Dovewing to move on from Tigerheart, and since they fought together during the badger attack, she was probably secretly asking how Tigerheart was doing.
But I really do think it was partly Tigerheart's fault why Dovewing never truly moved on. She did try, at first - but then Tigerheart kept asking about her. Tigerheart didn't respect her choice when she didn't want to be with him anymore in TLH, and would constantly ask about Bumblestripe.
Really, I don't think Tigerheart has been fair to her. He doesn't let Dovewing move on and he probably would have argued with her if Dovewing hadn't left him quickly like she did. She knew that the prophecy was important and she knew that she shouldn't have been with him on that night in TLH in the first place. But all Tigerheart cared about was their relationship, not so much for the Clans.
He was also bitter that Dovewing let him go so easily, saying this to Ivypool:
When Ivypool didn't care what Dovewing did, Tigerheart was angry that she said he should put his own Clan first too. And this was during the Great Battle!
Tigerheart also took advantage of Dovewing's knowledge for the catmint. Now, both characters were at fault for this - Dovewing shouldn't have told him, but Tigerheart betrayed her by taking advantage of this. But I do understand why. I mean, their medicine cat was dying.
But really, when Dovewing left him Tigerheart was bitter. It seems like he only thinks about his relationship with Dovewing and not the Great Battle. He didn't take her seriously, and he didn't support her like he should have.
Tigerheart was still bitter in AVOS when he made contact with Dovewing. Whenever Dovewing tried to see him he gave her the cold shoulder.
Some people say Dovewing didn't handle dropping their relationship right, but what was she supposed to do? Continue arguing with Tigerheart? Dovewing tried to be gentle about it, saying to him that they should both be loyal to their Clans and not each other. It was Tigerheart who couldn't handle what she decided.
I think Dovewing handled it fine. Tigerheart was only bitter because "she chose her Clan over him". I mean, he pretty much confirmed it himself, saying this twice.
Tigerheart doesn't treat her fairly, or with respect, and I really wish he handled it better instead of acting bitter and angry about it. It was Tigerheart who didn't take the prophecy seriously, and he was the one who never tried to move on, either. At least Dovewing tried. Tigerheart didn't and he was angry about it. Tigerheart was still angry with her in AVOS too, and I think two years have passed (or maybe a year) by then!
Now, don't get me wrong, this is also partly Dovewing's fault too for not trying hard enough. But right from the moment when Dovewing wanted to leave him in TLH, Tigerheart didn't want to let her go. Instead of supporting her choice like he should have, Tigerheart argued with her:
"I'll catch up!" Dovewing called.
As her Clanmates disappeared into the grass, she hared across the clearing and dived into the ferns. Tigerheart backed away, his eyes wide.
"What are you doing here?" Dovewing demanded.
"Did you really hear all the way to the Dark Forest?" Tigerheart's mew was barely a whisper.
"You know I did!" There wasn't time to explain. "I've told you this before." Anger surged through her. He wasn't supposed to be here. Didn't he ever follow rules? Or take things seriously?
"But I've never actually seen you use your powers." Tigerheart blinked. "It was great!" He moved closer, thrusting his muzzle toward her cheek.
Dovewing jerked away. "What are you doing?"
"What I always do!" Tigerheart protested. "What's the matter? Nothing's changed between us, has it?"
Doesn't he realize the Clans are on the verge of being destroyed? Or is he here to spy for the Dark Forest?
"I don't know." Dovewing's paws pricked.
"We can have more night together, can't we?" Tigerheart pleaded.
"No, we can't." Pain stabbed at Dovewing's chest. "I have to concentrate on the prophecy! There's a battle coming." A lump rose in her throat. "I don't know who to trust anymore!"
Tigerheart shot to her side, pressing close. "You can always trust me." The warm scent of him made her shake. "I love you!" he breathed.
Dovewing wrenched herself away. "This isn't the time." She shook her head. "I have a battle to fight." She met his gaze. "So do you."
"What about afterward?" he murmured.
"There will be four Clans again." Dovewing shut her eyes tight. "You'll belong to ShadowClan and I'll belong to ThunderClan, and... and maybe that's how it should be."
Tigerheart stabbed the earth with his claws. "You can give me up so easily?"
Dovewing shook her head. "There's nothing easy about this," she hissed. "How can you be more worried about us, with everything that's going on? You know what's happening better than most cats!" it was as if she was looking at him for the first time: A ShadowClan cat, and a Dark Forest warrior. A cat who thought her powers were cool, but had no idea how important the prophecy was. What am I doing?
Spinning around, she crashed through the ferns and raced across the clearing. She heard Tigerheart call after her, but she didn't look back. - The Last Hope, pg. 232-233

"Where's Dovewing?" Tigerheart was asking.
Ivypool had a guarded look, and her tone was distant as she replied. "She's in the camp."
"With Bumblestripe?" Tigerheart glanced around as if he was looking for the pale gray tom.
"I don't think that's any of your business," Ivypool retorted. - BrS, pg. 59
