I really like Fernsong and his relationship with Ivypool has grown on me, but what exactly is the point of his character? It's pretty clear he's the stay at home dad character Kate was hinting towards, but if I recall correctly, it's also been stated that the Erins wanted to break gender stereotypes... but what gender stereotypes?
There have been attentive fathers in the series before and toms and she-cats are pretty equal for the most part. Leafstar and Squirrelflight even managed to have their own kits while being leader and deputy respectively. And before deputies succeeded their leaders, the former would pick their own kin to succeed them—often their own kits. Even WindClan's first leader Windstar led her Clan while still being a mother.

I guess they wanted a tom to voluntarily be a stay-at-home. Graystripe and Oakheart loved their kits, but probably wouldn't be stay-at-home fathers if the mothers were around. In a typical warriors family where both parents are in the same clan, the mother usually stays in the nursery with the kits and the father hunts and visits once in a while. The only exceptions are when the mother isn't around or the mother has a special position (leader, deputy, medicine cat, etc.). Fernsong and Ivypool's case is special because there is not situation to prevent them from having a typical family scenario, mother in the nursery and father doing warrior stuff. If they do a role reversal voluntarily for no more reason than they are more comfortable with with the opposite role, it would make it all the more special. Plus, their dynamic is really cute.
I do think Warriors is pretty good about gender equality and stereotypes, though, minus the lack of female villains and the 3:1 or 3:2 male to female leader ratio.
