Swiftstar blinked in surprise. He had not considered training as a tunneler. Especially after the fire the thought of going back under the ground terrified him. His chest began to tighten as he erupted into a small coughing fit. No. Not now. Come on, pull yourself together! he chided himself, trying to control the coughing. Eyes watering, he managed to bring his breathing back under control. His clan needed him to be as unbiased as possible. Was this the solution "That's..." he let out a small cough "That's a good idea Dashclaw. A very good idea." flicking his ear he suddenly wondered if Dashclaw would see this as hypocritical. After all he had just removed the former tunneler from the tunnels citing that he was a moor-runner at heart...but now he was going to go down there himself?
Frostpetal's ears pinned back to her head. "Or Swiftstar picked a senior tunneler because he values a tunneler's opinion and wants to make sure they're understood too. It's not like Scarstar was known for picking tunnelers for deputy either. At least Swiftstar is trying!"

Eclipsesky shook his head "It's not, you're right. No other cat can replace your mother, I miss Lavendersun every day." he mewed, a memory of his mother popping up in his mind bringing a small smile to his face. "But the pain will be replaced slowly, you will be together again one day when you go to starclan and you will see her when we go to moonstone."

Dashclaw furrowed his brow at Swiftstar's coughing. That was strange, but perhaps the young leader was still effected by the smoke after having to come save him in the tunnels. "Then get on it. Blacktail can look after the Clan while you train. Harewhisker is pretty skilled. He could teach you or Birchstep. He's more patient than my brother."
Harewhisker shook his head, he didn't want to argue with her. "I'm just saying, nothing's going to change when it comes to moor-runners and tunnelers. You guys are above ground, so you'll always be seen over us."

Swiftstar gave a small smile to Dashclaw, he certainly spoke his mind. The smile faded slightly as "Dashclaw, I know you aren't very happy with me right now, and I understand why. I don't regret my decision, nor do I expect you to forgive me. But I hope in time you will come to trust me again." His voice was calm but confident.
Frostpetal scoffed, glancing away from her mate. "I've never felt greater than you Harewhisker, I'm sorry if you think I have."

Dashclaw flicked his tail and looked away from Swiftstar once again. "We both claim we're doing what's best for the Clan, Swiftstar. We can't expect anymore than that." He stood up to leave. "If you'll excuse me."
Harewhisker leaned into her, trying to nuzzle his cheek against hers when she leaned away. "You never did. Of everyone, I'm sure you're the one who sees me the most, Frostpetal."

Swiftstar nodded, not calling the tom back. It would take time for him to heal, and Swiftstar wanted to give him as much time and space as he needed. Taking a breath, his brain returned to Meadowbrook. Now that she had been exposed it seemed there was much for him to do. Dashclaw had been right, he did need a tunneling mentor. He and Harewhisker had worked well enough in the tunnels during the fire, and Swiftstar had no doubts about his abilities. Perhaps he would be interested in mentoring the leader as well. Standing, he scanned the camp for Harewhisker, finally spotting him talking to his mate. He began to pad over to them. "Harewhisker, may I speak to you for a moment?" he asked as he approached.
Frostpetal looked stubbornly away from her mate, staying silent. What would happen if their kits were moor runners? Would Harewhisker think badly of them or would they think their father was less than them?

Harewhisker flicked his ear when Frostpetal turned away from him, he couldn't hide the pout on his face, but when Swiftstar stepped up, Harewhisker quickly collected himself and sat up. "Uh, sure, Swiftstar, what do you need?"

Swiftstar indicated for the senior tunneler to follow him back to the remnants of his den, away from the rest of the clan. "I was just speaking with Dashclaw, and he pointed out that my lack of tunneler experience will eventually be detrimental to keeping WindClan united. He has a point, and I agree with him. I can't lead WindClan, or hope to understand what is best for you without first hand experience. I plan to announce to the clan later that I will be undertaking tunneler training, and I was hoping you would do me the honor of being my mentor."
Frostpetal watched Harewhisker leave and placed her head on her front paws. Her stomach swirled uncomfortably as she moped

Dashclaw padded off help with the rebuilding of the camp wall. Grasslight trailed towards her mate, quietly slipping up beside him as she opened her mouth, only to close it again. She reached up to help him with the camp wall instead, comforted merely by his presence. She hoped she did not look as hurt as she felt, more interested in why Dashclaw had seemed to speak to Swiftstar. “Hey...are you doing alright?” She finally asked.

Harewhisker followed after his leader and blinked in surprise at Swiftstar's request. First, it surprised him that Dashclaw was the one to suggest this to Swiftstar and second, he was surprised that Swiftstar wanted training from him. Wouldn't Dustswirl or Birchstep be the better choice? Harewhisker grew still at the realization of what Swiftstar was saying. Swiftstar was really putting in the effort to change things for the tunnelers of the Clan. That made Harewhisker flick his ear in guilt over what he said to Frostpetal. After what happened in the tunnels during the Great Fire and how Swiftstar kept his cool, the leader would no doubt be a better apprentice than Dashclaw. "I'm honored that you want me to train you, Swiftstar, and I will do my best to teach you how to tunnel." He smiled softly, finding new respect for the younger tom. "What you've decided is admirable and I really think it will only help the Clan."

Swiftstar nodded. "We're all one clan Harewhisker....if I can do anything to further that, then I'll do it." He paused for a moment, thinking through his next words. "I don't promise that I will be a perfect apprentice, but I will certainly try my best. I have to admit the tunnels make me uneasy, but if this will help bring the clan together then I am more than willing to put that discomfort aside and put the clan first."

"Would you be doing alright if you were a constant failure in your father's eyes?" Dashclaw didn't look at her, but frowned heavily at the brambles they were securing. "I can't do anything right, Grasslight."
Harewhisker lightly smirked. "That uneasiness will go away the more you get used too and know the tunnels. I won't let you down, Swiftstar."

Swiftstar smiled at his now-mentor. "Then if it's alright with you, I believe I have something to tell the clan."
Flicking his tail, he padded over to Tall Rock and leaped up. After taking a moment to catch his breath, he addressed the clan "Let all cats old enough to hunt gather here beneath tall rock for a clan meeting!"

Dashclaw let out a heavy sigh when he heard Swiftstar's call. He pulled off the wall to listen in but didn't move any closer
Harewhisker moved back over to Frostpetal and he licked her ear. "I'm sorry," he mewed quietly. "I was wrong."

Hazelear looked up as well from where she was laying.

"I can't do anything right, Grasslight." Harewhisker lightly smirked. "That uneasiness will go away the more you get used too and know the tunnels. I won't let you down, Swiftstar." “Well...I can’t say I know how that feels. Boulderfoot was a tunneler though, so maybe somewhere up there he’s not keen on me being a moor-runner...but that’s besides the point.” Grasslight shook her head lightly. “Your father was strict on you. You didn’t deserve that, you know. I know how hard you worked, and I am truly sorry that it was taken from you...but a failure is the last thing you are. How can you be a failure, if you have given me the greatest parts of my life.” She glanced back over at their kits, watching them helping to rebuild the clan. She looked at Dashclaw and mewed. “But I also know that my words alone won’t be enough to persuade you. This is something you’ll have to decide on your own...but you know that I am always at your side.”

Swiftstar waited for the clan to gather before continuing on. He quickly ran through everything he wanted to say, not wanting to leave anything out.
"So much hurt and pain has befallen WindClan in the last half-moon, and I think a bit of good news is in order. Larkkit and Juniperkit please step forward. Both of you have reached the age of six moons and are ready to begin your warrior training. It is my understanding that you both wish to train as tunnelers, so from this day on until you receive your warrior name, Larkkit you shall be known as Larkpaw! Twigtail, you are ready to receive your first apprentice and you shall mentor Larkpaw. Juniperkit, from this day on until you receive your warrior name, you shall be called Juniperpaw! Birchstep, you have shown yourself to be a reliable mentor and you will be responsible for training Juniperpaw!
Additionally, it has come to my attention that the only way I can truly learn about tunnelers and show my dedication to uniting WindClan is to train as a tunneler myself. I have spoken with Harewhisker, and he has agreed to take me on as an apprentice." He paused and twitched his whiskers good humoredly at the clan and locked eyes with Harewhisker. "May StarClan watch over him as he takes on this most difficult task." As he finished he took on a more serious demenor.
"It has also come to my attention now that Meadowbrook's crimes have been exposed, that I was wrong in banishing Stormfury." He paused, glancing to Silverspirit, Sandfall and Sagefoot. "Part of being a strong leader is admitting your mistakes, learning from them, and doing what you can to rectify them. It is because of this that I plan to take a small patrol to ShadowClan to absolve Stormfury of his crimes, and give him the option to come back to WindClan."

Frostpetal flicked her ear at Harewhisker before turning her attention to Swiftstar. When he announced that Harewhisker would be mentoring him, her eyes snapped over to him in surprise "What?" she whispered "You are??"

"Larkpaw! Juniperpaw!" Harewhisker cheered and when Swiftstar locked eyes with him, Harewhisker smiled in amusement, sitting a bit taller at the honor of getting to train the young leader. Surely, training Swiftstar wouldn't be that hard? Yet, at the mention of Swiftstar going to ShadowClan, he blinked in surprise. Was now really a good time to do that?
Dashclaw remained quiet, even through the apprentice ceremonies. He tapped his tail upon the ground in impatience for the meeting to be concluded and didn't even seem to care that Swiftstar was going to ShadowClan.

Sagefoot purred watching as her kits got their mentors.
Larkpaw touched her nose to Twigtail's shoulder, her chest puffed out. She was finally going to be a tunneler!
My cats called out "Larkpaw! Juniperpaw!"
Sandfall tensed at the mention of his brother, Stormfury would surely not want to come back, didn't he have a mate? The tom thought.
Eclipsesky looked down as he watched the ceremony, knowing Stormfury would be staying in Shadowclan. He had made that very clear.

Juniperpaw rushed quickly to touch noses with Birchstep, anxious but excited all the same. “I’ll be the best apprentice you’ll ever have!” She promised, hoping that she’d get to train to be a strong Tunneler.
