Where was it stated that he was killed off because he was a "Gary Stu"? Which I don't agree he is. He has flaws, like for example being he can drift off quite a bit into his own mind. And he tends to want to keep going even though the others are tired. He can be easily distracted by signs and unnecessarily persistent.

I think Ujurak was a bit of a pointless character at times along with his shape-shifting powers. Don't get me wrong, sometimes I found him to be useful for the plot and a few rare moments of generally enjoying his character but in the end he had more potential than his crew. Also didn't know why he had powers in the first place nor was it ever explained which rubs me the wrong way.
