[OMG this is so weird - I want to go to Durham too! //hug// thank you! It's a while away but I appreciate it <3] (Omg seriously?! Is the uni far away from where you live? I'm in Spennymoor so it was both convenient and a dream place with it being quite prestigious) [It's close; I'm a Sunderland lass myself XD]

Damianos winced, sadly looking away from his friend. 'I am sorry.' He said, empathising with him. 'Where were you injured?' He paused again, frowning and tilting his head. 'How... long have you been here?' "My stomach" Aedan indicated with a hand the general area of his injury, on which was still a nice clean battle scar "And I've been here for five years. I was eighteen when I was captured, and I'm twenty-three now"

He informed him, shaken. 'Mitera will be beside herself with worry.' He whispered, straining to keep himself calm. 'I'm going to die here,' he thought to himself, biting his lip and making it bleed. 'Other than death, how do we earn our way out of here?' He worriedly asked, looking back up at Aedan.

Aedan smiled gently "Relax, you can earn your freedom. Over the years I have seen many men come and go, some earning their freedom within a year. It is only because I have trouble making the crowd like me - I come from such a very far part of the Empire, and the Romans see my people as barbarians - that I have been here so long. The emperor may present you with a wooden sword, which would make you a full Roman citizen and a free man once again"

You will earn your freedom.' He placed his hand amiably on Aedan's upper arm, smiling at him warmly. 'People are blind fools.'

Aedan smiled "Well, thank you, Damainos. I would say the same for you, without a doubt. I just wish other people would see us in the same way. But then again, if they did, who would the Romans have for their games?"

But then again, if they did, who would the Romans have for their games?" Feeling better at his statement Damianos nodded, smiling widely. 'Very true.' He looked up as the gladiators were begun to be led to get food, soldiers sternly watching them. 'We should join the group,' he warily said.

Aedan nodded as he followed the other man's gaze "Yes, let us eat."
He followed the rest of the group inside, the darkness engulfing them save for the windows letting in shafts of light, into a large room with a large dining area. Each gladiator took a seat before a plate of the simple but nutritious food that was served here as a staple.
Aedan sat, but saved a seat on which Damianos could sit

Aedan sat, but saved a seat on which Damianos could sit Damianos sat beside him, glancing around to take stock of the other gladiators, feeling tense and on-guard being the new guy around. He seemed unbothered by the food, and quietly began to eat- too hungry to care what it tasted like. 'when do you think they'll make me fight?' He asked Aedan in hushed tones.

"They'll wait a week, at least," Aedan replied as he ate "So that you can train up and get used to gladiator fighting. It's hard to say; it was a long time for me as they had to wait for my battle wound to heal"
It had taken months for his stomach to be close enough to normal for him to fight, but those months had been the worst of his life

'Do you know who you will be fighting?' He asked. 'Don't they usually tell you so you can prepare?' He looked up and tilted his head. 'Or do they only do that with some of you?'

Aedan shook his head "I'll find out a day before, probably. They don't like us being too prepare otherwise the fight looks too staged and boring, and the Roman crowds can see right through staged and boring - and they absolutely hate it"

Aedan shook his head "I'll find out a day before, probably. They don't like us being too prepare otherwise the fight looks too staged and boring, and the Roman crowds can see right through staged and boring - and they absolutely hate it" Damianos looked even more concerned. 'Tell me about the kinds of fights. From what I have heard in Greece there are quite a few ways- singles, where you face either a gladiator or an animal of some kind. Doubles, where you work with a gladiator whom is in your group, and strain to survive against another pair, or pair of animals- chariot, which is self explanatory- and groups, where two small groups of gladiators face up against each other.' Damianos listed them off his fingers. 'an I on track?'

"You're exactly right," Aedan replied "Sometimes they do staged battles, where two large groups of gladiators face off in the armours of opposing armies. This is usually to reenact a battle the Romans are particularly proud of having won. You don't want to be involved in any of these, because if you are on the non-Roman side, you may have to die by default, and you don't get a chance to have your life saved"

His eyes widened. 'Really?' He asked, chewing his lip and looking away. 'Romans are cruel. And they call US barbarians.' He finished his food and looked around the hall. 'You sure you don't wanna have a go and fight me?' He asked, grinning at Aedan. 'im really not that impressive. I'd rather be taught by someone who's seasoned than someone who wants to make money.' He cut an annoyed glance at the soldiers and trainers circling the room.

Aedan shrugged as they got up and prepared to leave the hall "Sure, we can spar together. You will probably need to work on a…lighter hand with your sword…I think, considering how long it took to get your sword out of the training dummy"

He laughed, a pleasant rumble. 'Yes, dèskalos.' He said- /yes, teacher./ 'I'm used to cutting down wheat with a sickle, or training on a wooden post in our barn.' He explained. 'It's all mostly instinct due to my father. Of course, instinct isn't much without training.'

Aedan laughed as they left and returned to the training grounds "I suspected as much. Well, rest assured that fighting a man is very different from harvesting wheat"
He grabbed two wooden swords, and handed one to the Greek man, before heading over to the practice area to spar some more.

Damianos followed, feeling his legs and arms start to ache with an eagerness to test what they could do. When they got there he hefted his sword to test it again, then smiled warmly up at Aedan. 'I'll try to defend against your attacks first.' He said.

Aedan nodded, and began to attack. He started off with slow, simple swings that would be easy to block, until he settled into a rhythm. Once he was in a fighting rhythm, he began varying his attacks in intensity, speed and type, moving from heavy slow swings to light fast jabs. He was trying to create as authentic a fighting experience as he could for Damianos, trying to include every type of attack he might have to defend against so he could work out what the Greek man's weaknesses were.
