Do you like romance? Do you think it can be pulled off well?
My answer is yes. But it is difficult to read romance fiction, especially in Warriors. Why? Because so many of them are riddled with cliches and unrealistic stuff.
Forbidden love - come on! We've seen it all before! And the cats have been taught their whole lives that they should put Clan loyalty above all; or do they actually forget that?
Love triangles are so boring to me. If you can't choose between them, then you don't really love them anyway. Case solved.
My point is, it's all the same. Does anyone know any romantic Warriors fanfiction where it's not about one of these two or any other ridiculous unrealistic abnormalities? Such as insta-love? If you don't know what insta-love is, then it's basically this:
And as soon as I saw the silhouette of the gorgeous silver tabby with her rippling muscles and marvellous odd-coloured eyes; one a blazing emerald green like leafy fire and the other a deep crystal blue like cold ice. She was beautiful! I knew she was going to be my mate forever and ever. "Hi," I said. "You're hot," she said. What?! I'm hot? We're going to be mates forever and ever!
Yep, basically that.
First of all, how do you see the colour of a silhouette? A silhouette is a black figure... Because of lighting... And it's fine to describe your crush as beautiful (obviously because they're your crush), but all the time? No thanks. It'll make them sound very Sue-ish. And what if you liked them for their personality, instead of their looks?
So there. Rant over. Finally...

Well to be fair, nothing is completely original anymore, but I definitely see your point. Funny how the actual series also has much of the same problems.

I've read some really good romance fanfics and some really bad ones. Usually I flip through the filters and find fanfics that have a lot praise and well thought out reviews.
As for the writing in the actual series, I think it is actually pretty realistic. The couples with the actual love and development such as FireXSand and CloudXBright end up being together and working well while none of the forbidden romances work because the cats are young and naive and fail to think things through. I'm glad the forbidden romances fail because it gives that added realism in the series, even if they are overdone. The only one that worked was Windflight's parents because the father was committed enough to the relationship to join ThunderClan.

That is likely because everyone saw it in the series and then they were like "Oh wait, that is good idea!" and now we have too many clichés to count. I don't really care about forbidden romance in the books as long as it is well written.
Maybe it's because forbidden relationships are way more common than we thought. Take Gorsetail and Beechfur as an example. Kate was the one that revealed that they had forbidden relationship. Who knows, maybe Pebblefoot and Minnowtail were half-clan too, after all, their fathers are not known.

I don't particularly like romance, but I feel it can be done well, and romance alone won't turn me away from a story

Well I like romance because drama attracts more readers Not every romance needs to have drama. Couples have fights, it's normal, but how common are love triangles actually are in real life? And romance does not equal drama. Both are completely different genres. What happened to genuine, sweet romance without all the extra stuff? What happened to cute fluff?

I'm not into romance, but if it's well done it can be all right. But I don't really care about Warriors couples. They just aren't that appealing to me.

If it's executed well, and the characters are in-character (mainly assuming they are from canon), then sure. Poorly written romance, on the other hand, is extremely hard to read for me.
With fics involving canon characters, I've noticed that ship fics about canon pairings tend to be written better than fics about non-canon pairings. Fanfiction involving the latter will often butcher characters. For instance, Squirrel x Ash fics tend to vilify Bramblestar, while ignoring the change in character Ashfur went through. A human AU fanfiction I just read was a thinly veiled ship fic for Ivy x Breeze. Both characters were butchered; Ivypool became a wimpy damsel in distress and a hopeless romantic, while Breezepelt became the ideal hero and a borderline Gary Stu, always saving Ivypool in times of trouble and failing in love with her. Obviously there are exceptions to this, but not many.
For non-canon fanfiction, it honestly depends on the author's writing ability (which is often amateur in this fandom).

I'm not a huge fan of romance, but if it's done well, I like it. Unfortunately, a lot of stories don't do it too well… Not to mention the Canon series has the same problems in some parts…

I like romance development where one character finds the other obnoxious, and they don't get along well until they start to grow up and become friends. It is more realistic to me, it can show that characters can change and mature, it can give the relationship a lot of history between the characters too if it is written well.
Now of course it can be repetitive, but at least it is better than "I don't know who to choose!" I like Dovewing and all, but the way how the Erins wrote her romance between Tiger and Bumble is just poorly written, and if they just took that out then perhaps Dovewing could have been written better.
