I think he's overrated. Jayfeather just... stays grumpy. I'm rather neutral on him, since he is an interesting character, he just doesn't really develop much. And in AVOS, he is even worse to Alderheart. I'm not saying Jayfeather is abusive, but he needs to be more patient with him. Leafpool even told him off and said to stop being so grumpy.
I don't mind Jayfeather, but I wish he developed more. But he does have a personality, he isn't obnoxious, and his POV is sometimes funny and interesting, so I don't dislike him. But I hate how some people treat him like he's a god or something though lol, like calling him "Jay -Jay".

I like Jayfeather, and he actually has developed. He's grumpy, sure, but that's kind of the point and even then he bears no ill will. Yellowfang was the same way, as was Hawkheart in TR. And I honestly don't see anything wrong with his treatment of Alderheart. I can sort of see where Jayfeather is coming from: Alderheart, his apprentice and the one who will succeed him, was spending a lot of time being concerned over Twigpaw instead of doing his job, or at least that's how Jayfeather saw it. And he wasn't entirely wrong, either, especially since Alderheart has shown to get distracted before. He also saw as Twigpaw getting in the way and, again, he wasn't entirely wrong on that either.
There's also the fact that Jayfeather may be a little jealous of Alderheart for being Bramblestar and Squirrelflight's biological son, as well as trying to push him to be the best medicine cat he can be. After all, it has been shown that despite everything, Jayfeather is proud of Alderheart.
Also, just because someone looks fine on the outside, doesn't mean they are on the inside. Jayfeather doesn't even appear all that much in either Dovewing's Silence or Bramblestar's Storm, so for all we know, he could've been upset about it all this time and we just didn't even know it. Jayfeather isn't exactly the type of cat to let his true feelings out anyway. Lionblaze and Dovewing didn't get used to the loss of their powers for a long time, so who says the same thing can't be said for Jayfeather?
The life of a medicine cat is also a very lonely one, and this is especially true for Jayfeather. He's blind and was forced to become a medicine cat, he lost his powers and doesn't seem to have as strong of a connection to StarClan as he used to, he doesn't seem to be close to Leafpool even before he knew she was his mother, many of his Clanmates died in just a few moons alone, including his grandfather and sister in the Great Battle, he doesn't seem to be very close to Bramblestar and Squirrelflight nowadays, he isn't all that close to Alderheart and Sparkpelt, his brother has a family of his own, his real father is in a different Clan and his half-brother hates him, and the only cat he's ever loved has been long dead for years.
And then there's this quote from Thunder and Shadow:
Jayfeather has also shown kindness regarding Twigpaw.
Then there's his age to take into account. Jayfeather's referred to himself as old, and while he may not be that old compared to other cats, stress is a cause of aging faster.
If anything, I see the behavior more as tough love.

Jayfeather is personally one of my favorite cats. If you compare Jaykit from "The Sight" To Jayfeather now, you actually can see how he has matured. I personally enjoyed reading from his POV. His sarcasm amused me, and I just generally find him as a relate-able cat. In the first few books, he just feels as if every cat treats him like a helpless mouse-brain, which I could honestly relate to when I was younger. The above post, I completely agree with. (Mothflight's post)^
Think of how much must be on his mind, with everything he's been through. It's still hard for me to wrap my head around.

I changed him quite a bit for an AU re-write, which means I don't really like him that much. He's more rueful, nervous, and immature. He's actually pretty ungrumpy at the beginning, but that's because I hadn't done anything with him.
Nearly 80% of characters are out of character though.

I like him a lot, mainly for the reasons Mothflight stated.
I also like him because despite his blindness, he manages to occupy a high position in the Clan and be good at it. He is a good representation of a disabled character that manages to succeed despite his disability.
And he wasn't exactly forced, either, I feel like. He was bad at battle, but it was also established from the moment he was introduced that he was good at things like herbs. So he would become a medicine cat apprentice of his own will, probably, if he wasn't so desperate to prove himself in battle despite his blindness.
