Breathe
Hello, I'm Bramble and has never written a fanfiction before. Feel free to comment or like this thread! I hope you enjoy it.
Prologue
I remember it happening quickly, much too quickly for me. A flash of sharp claws, about to end a life mercilessly. Why? My pale blue eyes glazed blankly at the small, frail brown-furred figure huddled on the ground. The victim was limp, but managed to feebly raise her head. Surprise and fear ran through my head. That cat… was my sister. That cat… was slowly slipping away. “Promise me; promise me, that you will finish the job I didn’t get to. Do me some good, Swiftsky.” The blood-stained she-cat purred feebly, more blood welling up around her neck and slowly trickling onto the ground. Drip, drip, drip, drip. Nothing mattered anymore. In my own world, it was just Larksong and I. Just us. Like it used to be when we were little. She didn’t say anymore or stop to nuzzle me, and just left that easily. With glassy eyes, her head rolled back as more and more blood just kept on trickling. Then the trickling stopped. Where did that killer go? I needed to know. My sister was dead, and I didn’t feel grief at that moment. I felt some sort of horrible anger, though. Anger that coursed through my veins and shot through my heart. “AAH!” A shrill scream brought my down to earth and my ears swiveled to the noise. A brown tom was wrestling on the ground
with a she-cat who was struggling to push him away so she could scratch him. That tom had a strange scent on him… Was that Larksong? Why was her scent there? Suddenly, something hit me and almost made me winded. He was the killer! He needed to be dealt with. Satisfaction tingled from every strand of fur on my pelt as I sprinted over to him, leaving the dead Larksong to stare blankly into space. He was going down… By then, it all happened in a blur of motion. The she-cat was relieved of a burden as I lunged at him, pinning the tom down so I could get near his soft neck fur. It was so easy to just bite down… So that’s what I did! Getting a good grip, I bit hard and felt flesh rip. Blood welled up in my mouth, and a strange gurgling sound was ringing through the air. He was dealt with now. “Give me mercy…” His last words were short and prompt but weak. No mercy. You didn’t give any to her, so I won’t give it to you. That felt so good. Didn’t it?
Chapter 1
“Swiftsky, I’m tired! !” An annoyed grey apprentice complained angrily at me, his dark fur ruffled. “Sure.” I muttered, the mountain air making me short of breath. The ground was very rough, and it was natural for apprentices to ask stupid questions or complain. My paws felt like little weights that I had to drag around, and my whole body felt like a burden to carry. I, the three apprentices, and Tornear had been traveling for almost a quarter-moon already. I looked up with hope at the sky. It was blue, but clouds covered most of it. Snow was falling anyways, and it made my pelt wet. “Can we go hunt?” A different voice asked. Glancing downwards, I realized everyone had stopped and three little apprentices were gazing up at me hopefully. I looked at the younger cats and felt annoyed by them, but didn’t say anything. Thankfully, Tornear came to the rescue by saying something. “Darkpaw, Leafpaw, and Streampaw... Will you ever stop asking questions? Come on, we need to move before a snowstorm sets in.” The wise senior warrior mewed gruffly, nudging them along and cuffing Streampaw on the ear lightly. I felt a bit relieved that I didn’t have to talk. I never really ever said anything once she died. My brain swirled with regretful thoughts, and those thoughts almost blinded me. Blood, blood, and more blood! His blood, Larksong’s blood…… No! That was not to be thought of. I was not supposed to remember that. My paws felt tingly instead of heavy, and the air felt lighter. I looked at Tornear, who was looking up with wide eyes. “We need to move, now!” He yowled, shaking his head. Darkpaw the medicine cat apprentice rolled her eyes with annoyance, and the other two apprentices followed with the same expressions. “Why do you always exaggerate?” She asked, stopping in her tracks. I licked my bristling pelt flat and narrowly dodged a sharp rock in my path. “Yeeeowch!” A sharp mew made me turn around. Leafpaw was suddenly huddled up on the ground, nursing her stubbed paw. She stared at everyone, and then got back up defiantly. “Nothing’s wrong…. I just bumped into something.” She muttered gruffly, padding along with Streampaw to catch up. Darkpaw stayed where she was, but eventually went along. I felt heavier snow tickle my nose, and glanced around the white and grey mountain environment warily. Suddenly, that snow got thicker and thicker. Before I knew it, that snow was falling so fast that I couldn’t see anyone else. The must all be behind! I was at the front of the group, so…. Worry came in a sharp pang. The cold air made my whiskers freeze together, and my paws were soggy from stepping in melted snow. What was exactly happening? We were sent to retrieve a healing herb from the tribe cats, but now everyone’s separated in a blizzard. Wow, such luck! Feeling too tired to go on or even call out, I just sat down and felt darkness form at the corners of my eyes. It was tempting to just let the dark come in, but there were promises to keep and probably miles to go before I could ever sleep. “Torn….ear? Apprentices…..” I feebly tried to yowl, but it failed. That small mew was the last of my energy, and there wasn’t even enough to get back up and brave through the blinding snow that came in sheets. Darkness was welcome now as I just let in and fell to the ground in a heap and hit the snow with a ‘poof’ noise. Was that me? Oh well, I was tired.
“Hello sister, I suppose you are doing what I didn’t finish? Fixing Thornclan and vanquishing the evil Sickness?” The familiar voice of perky, happy, Larksong asked. I opened my eyes and looked around. All around me was a happy meadow with flowers and green grass with a jolly bright sun. I got up and faced the partially transparent brown she-cat with a smile. A message from Starclan! “Larksong! I missed you so much!” My tone was never like this, and it was much louder. This was the real me. I ran over to nuzzle my littermate affectionately and tell her about me being appointed deputy, and everything that had happened. Larksong suddenly pushed me away, a new dark look in her eyes. “I told you to save Thornclan! You didn’t bother to even search for everyone else! When I was dying, I fought with every bit of my being to say my last words. But now… You are lying in the snow like a kit and hoping to disappear or something. My sister is a coward!” She spat, suddenly spinning and lunging at me. Her teeth closed around my neck in the exact fashion that I killed her murderer in that battle, and they tightened. Then, it all went black before anything more could happen.. “Hello? Oh, you’re awake!” Some faraway voice remarked happily.
Chapter 2
“Finally!” The voice exclaimed again. Who??? What??? My vision began to return, but everything was still blurry. “Your friends are here too, don’t worry.” I finally totally regained my sight and saw a cave around me and a mottled she-cat standing over me with bright amber eyes. “Is this the tribe?” I questioned the strange cat, who was gazing at me with amusement. She reminded me of Larksong…. Oh no! It all came back to me. That dream, and her turning on me. Was she mad? I might get the herb now for Thornclan! “Affirmative! I am Bird That Trills At Midnight! You can call me Bird.” The she-cat chirped, fixing my warm bedding with a little paw. I slowly rose up, my teeth chattering. The three apprentices were in separate nests, sleeping like small logs. Tornear was already awake and animatedly chatting with a herb-scented tom.
