- Kallik - She Bear. Cub of Nisa and sister of Taqqiq. In search of her brother, she meets Toklo, Lusa and Ujurak who then go on the quest.
- Nisa - She Bear. Mother of Kallik and Taqqiq. Killed by an Orca while saving Taqqiq and Kallik.
- Taqqiq - He Bear. Brother of Kallik. Separated from Kallik when they are thrown from the water by their mother.
- Nanuk - She Bear. Her cubs died, and she is expected to take in Kallik as her own. She then dies when the cage they are in crashes.
- Silaluk
- Purnaq - Elderly He Bear. The first white bear Kallik meets after her mother dies, when she arrives at the white bear gathering place.
Black - Lusa - She Bear. Born in the Bear Bowl. Cub of Ashia and King. Escapes the Bear Bowl in search of adventure and a promise to find Toklo, Oka's son. Soon meets up with him, Ujurak and Kallik who then journey together.
- Yogi - He Bear. Friend of Lusa in the Bear Bowl
- Ashia - She Bear. Mother of Lusa and mate of King
- King - Old He Bear. Father of Lusa and mate of Ashia. Tells tales of when he lived in the wild

Brown - Toklo - He Bear. Brother of Tobi and Cub of Oka. After the death of his brother, he is pushed away from his mother and then finds Ujurak, Kallik and Lusa who then journey together.
- Ujurak - He Bear. Shape Shifter Bear who meets Toklo, Lusa and Kallik and leads the Quest
- Tobi - Weak He Bear. Brother of Toklo who dies from illness. Cub of Oka
- Oka - She Bear. Mother of Toklo and Tobi. After Tobi's death, she pushes Toklo away and is then taken away by the claw, where she meets Lusa in the Bear Bowl and tells her to find her son.

- Grumps - Old grumpy and aggressive He Bear. His name is not really Grumps, but Lusa and Yogi gave him that name

1.) Be honest, when you first started the books, were you in love? Or did it take some time adjusting? Do you think this book was a good way to start off the series?
2.) Do you think that Oka made the right decision leaving Toklo?
