A few months ago I remember when I read The Sight again, Nightcloud actually seemed nice. She comforted other apprentices that weren't her own children, and was even grateful to Jaypaw when he saved Breezepaw's life. Nightcloud was the one who offered to help put the apprentices to sleep. Leafpool didn't ask her; Nightcloud offered.
In fact, I don't believe Nightcloud really starts to change until after the truth comes out. She seems alright, and really acting the way she did around Leafpool is normal.
I still think Nightcloud is a bad parent, but when I saw the soft side of her when she cared for Lionpaw and Breezepaw it really made me wonder if Nightcloud was a good cat and what TUG said was true - that Nightcloud changed when she discovered that Crowfeather was only using her.
However, I do not like the fact that Nightcloud wanted to make Crowfeather fall in love with her. You cannot make Crowfeather fall in love. You can't force anyone to fall in love. Maybe this would define to some people as trying "hard to please", but I don't believe this is the case.
I'm not entirely sure what Nightcloud's situation is with Crowfeather. Both parents are to blame for Breezepelt's behavior - Crowfeather should have been there as a father for Breezepelt, and Nightcloud should have given him a chance and to let him have his own opinion on his father rather than encourage him to hate his father. However, Breezepelt also made his own choice to go to the Dark Forest. No one forced him to go there. And he was smug when Ivypool told the Clans why everyone trained there, which means he really only went there for power and vengeance. Breezepelt betrayed his Clan. I even read a scene in The Last Hope that Breezepelt chased after his father during the Great Battle, so I wonder if he was chasing after Crowfeather to kill him.
Breezepelt just had a really bad family, and the Dark Forest was all he had. I do believe that Nightcloud loved him but she gives bad examples for parenting, like dragging Crowfeather with claws and arguing with him right in front of her son. Breezepelt wailed for them to stop and I even felt sorry for him.
I don't think I will ever like Nightcloud, I may always dislike her, but I can't understand if she always knew that Crowfeather never loved her, and if she used him just to gain kits. She never really showed signs that she loved him, she was always aggressive around him, but then Crowfeather never really showed signs that he loved her either. But I can't forgive Nightcloud for her parenting. I just don't understand her situation with Crowfeather because she hasn't been shown all that much to confirm everything, however, I do wonder when Crowfeather said he couldn't blame her for being angry to Breezepelt in TLH, makes me wonder if what everything TUG says about Nightcloud was true, if even Crowfeather couldn't blame Nightcloud.
"Try to persuade them to sleep," Leafpool told Jaypaw. "I'll go and tell the others they're all right." Firestar, Crowfeather, Heatherpaw, Brambleclaw and Squirrelflight were waiting anxiously outside. The brambles swished as the medicine cat padded out of the den.
"I'll make sure they sleep," Nightcloud meowed. Jaypaw heard the swish of her tail as she swept it rhythmically over the earth-powered pelts of the two apprentices. - The Sight, page 354
